What are five godly characteristics you might find in a woman of God?
Puts God First
A godly woman is a woman who puts God first in her life. She values the Word of God over what others think about things like marriage, avoiding sexual immorality, clothing, cars, jobs, or whatever else there might be. God also comes first in her life over family, friends, and even her husband, if she’s married. God must be on the throne of her life before God can reign in her life. Like Godly men, she must resign as the chairwoman of her own life. It takes concerted effort to die to ourselves and she will need God’s supernatural strength to keep seeking Him and His kingdom first (Matt 6:33) and that means she must seek the King of that kingdom above anything in her life.
Is Merciful
I will brag about my wife because she won’t, but she’s got a merciful heart. Not only because she’s an animal rescuer but she also prepares food for sick neighbors, bakes holiday goodies for those who are alone during the holidays, and she collects the prayer requests for those in the community so that she can pray for them. She gives to charity and always spends money on others who are in need. This has been her custom for so long, I might tend to take it for granted but she is as much like the Proverbs 31 woman as anyone I know or have ever known. Regarding her husband, the godly woman does him “good, and not harm, all the days of her life” (Prov 31:12) but also for others as “She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy” (Prov 31:20). “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come” (Prov 31:25) or worries over what comes tomorrow and “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Prov 31:27) and so “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (Prov 31:28). The most important characteristic of the godly woman is that she is “a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Prov 31:30b).
Is Humble
God will not ever work in or through a person who has first not humbled themselves. God is resistant or opposed to anyone who’s full of pride and He will extend His grace only to those who are humble in nature (James 4:6). I can think of many women in the Bible that were humble beyond most. When Mary was told that she’d give birth as a virgin to Jesus Christ, the Savior, she simply said “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her” (Luke 1:38). When Ruth was blessed by Boaz with more than enough grain “she fell on her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner” (Ruth 2:10). Boaz also said “The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!” Then she said, “I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants” (Ruth 2:12-13). Humility was one of Ruth’s greatest strengths.
Is Modest
A godly woman is one that is modest in every way. She dresses modestly, she speaks with modesty, and all she does is modest compared to the ways of the world. The Apostle Peter wrote “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious” (1st Pet 3:3-4). Peter goes on to explain that “this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands” (1st Pet 3:5). If a woman dresses provocatively, she can cause a man to stumble by his lusting in his heart after her so she is partly responsible for how she dresses because of how it affects other men who see her.
Is a Student of the Word
The Word of God has effectual power to change a person (Isaiah 55:11), even a king’s heart (Prov 21:1). God does not need help in His Word but we need help with not only understanding it but applying it so a godly woman will abide in the Word of God on a daily basis and ask for the Helper’s illumination; that is, the Holy Spirit. This ensures that she is abiding in Christ and Christ is abiding in her (John 15:1-7). Like the psalmist, she has a deep thirst, almost like a deer pants thirstily after water (Psalm 42:1). This woman of God is a woman “who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers” (Psalm 1:1). This woman’s delight is “in the law of the Lord, and on his law [she] meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2) and so she will be “like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither” and whatever she does, she prospers (Psalm 1:3).
Conclusion
A godly woman is worth more than money can buy because she worth is infinitely more than riches. She is rich inwardly and her actions show that outwardly. She is merciful, she is humble, she is modest, she is in the Word of God daily, and above all, she seeks the Lord above all things and above all people and for that, the godly woman is precious in God’s sight.
