Every Writer Should Read the Book WRITE BETTER (by Andrew Le Peau) I have a weekly book I read while I wait in line trying to get into the grocery story. A couple of weeks ago, that book was Andrew Le Peau’s Write Better (IVP, 2019). It is a guidebook for compelling writing (advice both for fiction and non-fiction) from a seasoned publishing editor. I think Le Peau has a lot to offer, especially to academic writers. We academics were taught... Read more

This is PART 2 of the insights blogs from the #50-2-Follow series Each of the 50 scholars I interviewed mentioned books they read as students that left a strong impression on them. An Amazing Podcast Conversation with Fleming Rutledge  I don’t listen to podcasts often, but when I do, I check out the latest from OnScript. Recently, OnScript host Erin Heim recorded a conversation at Wycliffe Hall (Oxford) with the incomparable Fleming Rutledge, minister, teacher, theologian, and award-winning author (Crucifixion, Advent, both on discount  FYI). I just listened to it today and, wow, so much wisdom and passion! I hung on every word she said and found her challenges and admonishes relevant and... Read more

“Reading the New Testament” Launches “Second Series” You may remember the excellent series “Reading the New Testament” (Hewlys), which featured scholars such as Charles Talbert, Charles Cousar, David Garland, and Luke Timothy Johnson. These were short volumes which covered the flow and sweep of the text, rather than detailed verse-by-verse exegesis. These were really handy for following the landscape of the forest of the text without getting bogged down in the minute details of the trees. Now, this series is... Read more

I don’t know about you, but during the self-quarantine era, I have been motivated to dig into my book reading pile. One of the best books I have read in 2020 is Paul, A New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology, by Michael Barber, Brant Pitre, and John Kincaid (Eerdmans). This book is an interesting hybrid of monograph (arguing for a new/particular approach to Pauline theology) and textbook (summing up Pauline scholarship with helpful analysis). The writing style is engaging and not... Read more

I noticed several scholars appeared more than... Read more
