This afternoon U.S. Federal Judge Orlando Garcia ruled that Texas’ prohibition of gay marriage is unconstitutional. That is the judgment…but there are many Christians who will be talking about a different type of judgment in the coming days. I can already hear them in pulpits around the state talking about the coming hell and damnation for homosexuals or perhaps more problematic staying neutral. I have a word from God for all of you. There is a judgment and it is far different than what you have envisioned.
In Matthew 25, Jesus talks about separating the sheep and the goats. The sheep are aligned with the marginalized and the oppressed. The goats are aligned with the marginalizers and the oppressors either by their action or inaction. Jesus declares firmly, “What you have done to or failed to do for the least of these you have done or failed to do to me.” Those who are judged by God are the ones who turn their backs on the marginalized and the oppressed. On this day you can either stand with the incarnated Christ that stands with our queer neighbors or the forces of marginalization and oppression…but you cannot do both.
The time is long overdue for Christians to live out what it truly means to love our neighbors as our self. The world is changing and we can either choose to love our neighbors or hate them. We can either stand with God or against God. The judgment is upon us. Where do you stand?
