You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Whoops, Mr. John Piper?

You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Whoops, Mr. John Piper? December 13, 2018

What Christmas used to look like at my house. Here in Costa Rica we have one string of lights up and that’s about it now.

It’s that time of the year again, when Evangelical Christians rush about making simple things, and cultural touchstones awkward and hard. Yes, I’m talking about the holiday season, from Nancy Campbell being the Grinchess That Stole Hanukkah, angry muttering about Starbucks cups, to Fox News fueled rants about what greeting to give, to some shouting jerkish pastors in the mall announcing to the hordes of kids visiting Santa that he’s not real. John Piper isn’t making kids cry by claiming Santa is not real, but he’s giving advice to mothers about making sure kids know Santa is a myth and Jesus is real.

Now no one is saying that families cannot do whatever traditions that they want to embrace, but John Piper, yet again, is saying what a β€˜True Christian’ tm must do. No, John, people get to do whatever tradition makes them happy no matter what you personally feel about it.

It’s sad when Christians do not even know the history of their own religion. Santa Claus origin is based upon the real life legend of Saint Nicholas.

Nicholas lived in 200 AD and was known for his generosity with his enormous wealth, someone to be admired and emulated, unless you’re John Piper apparently.

There are better ways to handle the whole myth versus reality issue of Santa Claus than β€˜He ain’t Jesus, so no one should believe in him’ shtick Piper promotes. Just like there are better ways to handle the over the top commercialism the holiday has morphed into. Even if you do not want your children believing in a Santa.

I would personally rather see a Christmas with kids believing in the legend of a saint and giving to those less fortunate. What’s wrong with a little wonder?
