The Toxic Patriarch?

The Toxic Patriarch?

While reading through the largely uninteresting articles in the latest No Greater Joy magazine I stumbled over this old article in which Michael Pearl takes a swing at the now defunct Vision Forum.Β  I was unaware that Pearl disliked the theology of Doug Phillips and Vision Forum.

This came from another one of those suspiciously written letters the Pearl claim to receive. A letter from 2009. What was interesting about this one is that the letter writer claimed Pearl’s advice makes kids angry at their parents and more alienated. No, not because of the beat those kids silly advice, but because, well, it’s never fully explained and his writer just threw in a bunch of confusing scripture references that make little sense.

What I find the most amusing about all of this is that Michael puts down a long list of what he thinks a bad patriarch looks like. I am seeing many prominent Patriarchs in his words, including some that could apply also to his self.

I don’t know. While there are some considerable overlap with failed patriarchs like Doug Phillips there’s a lot of Vaughn Ohlman, Voddie Baucham and others in there too.

But I don’t see how Michael Pearl possibly thinks he is not like the rest of them. If I recall correctly his own daughter was so cowed and broken of spirit that she was unable to pick a place to eat when her own husband told her to chose. There have been stories of his own children being unable to deal with simple tasks like picking out new clothing and other things that are unthinking every day activities that many of us take for granted.

Michael follows this list with one illustrating what he thinks a good patriarch looks like. Too bad it does not seem to be any of the stuff he himself actually does. Pure fantasy.
