I don’t know if you’re seen this video from The Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta about a recent prayer event at Bethel Redding? They are busily praying away racism from the land. The sheer comedy of it all is that they used a Mattah staff as a symbol and references to “Lord of the Rings” in this prayer.
This, this! Is the crazy direction you can find yourself in when you are a member of some Evangelical churches. At my old church this was something routine, using a Mattah staff to declare war on things, serious and silly. You might pound your Mattah staff and rebuke the rain if it ruined your potluck outreach to the homeless. Or do the same when you wanted to end actual homelessness in the land.
Confession time: I’ve made and used many Mattahs in my years at my old church. This is how far from reality even folks who have critical thinking skills can get with the magical thinking of the symbolic.
Racism does need to end. It’s time. But this is not the intentional actions one must take to achieve it.
Thanks Hemant for reminding me of this long ago magical thinking and lunacy I willingly engaged in!
