I’ve been asked today to provide a weekly column for The Universe–the UK’s largest Catholic paper. I thought I might call the column The Bad Penny. There’s this Anglicism that Americans may not know which is, “He keeps turning up like a bad penny.”
I know I’m paranoid, but I did get the feeling that certain members of the English Catholic community were not exactly sorrowful when I and my family left for the USA two years ago. My doing a weekly column in the Catholic press might just be case of ‘a bad penny.’ Pray that the column will be gracious enough to printed and controversial enough to make people wish it weren’t printed.
