…that is the question. I’m thinking of starting to wear my cassock every day. Up til now I have worn ‘ordinary’ clerical dress every day except Friday (when we have our school mass) and Sunday. What do readers think? Do you prefer to see your priest in cassock or black trousers and clerical shirt and jacket? Why one or the other? Read more

Greenville has a terrific ballpark for the local minor league team. Fluor Field is situated downtown, and is a small, retro-looking baseball field. We’ve been to two games this season. It’s a perfect outing for the family for a summer evening. The only problem is, it’s difficult to remember who’s on first… Read more

We got back from the beach in time for the first day of teacher orientation at school and the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption. This illustration from Roving Medievalist. The Assumption has become my favorite Marian feast. I realize that our non-Catholic brethren have a real problem with the Assumption because it isn’t in the Bible. In fact, the evidence for the historicity of the Assumption is pretty scant in the early centuries as well.  What I love... Read more

The Feast of the Transfiguration is all about seeing things as they really are. Last week I was saying Mass in our little chapel at school, and it seemed to me that there was, beneath the altar, another whole realm of being. This other realm was connected to this visible realm in more complex and beautiful patterns than I could ever comprehend. It was as if I was getting a glimpse of that reality–a reality more beautiful and sad and... Read more

Here’s why benevolent secular humanism (aka atheism) leads to genocide: If you don’t believe in anything other than this physical realm, then the only thing worth doing is trying to improve the one world you’ve got: this one.  You can improve this world in one of two ways: 1. by simply making yourself more comfortable or 2.(because nobody really wants to be that babyish and selfish), try to improve the whole world and make it a better place. However, you’re... Read more

Here’s my latest article for Inside Catholic. It’s a round up on the Anglican’s disastrous summer.  For those of you who are tired of the Anglican posts, now that Lambeth is over I’ll be moving on too. Read more

Since moving to South Carolina I’ve been somewhat amused/bemused by the trendy names given to the new ‘community churches’. Sometimes they are just named by their local community. We have a big one here in town called ‘Brookwood’ which, I guess, is the name of the local subdivision. It’s the ones with ‘creative’ spiritual sounding names that amuse me. I’ve spotted: Cornerstone Fresh Spring Living Water Fellowship The Heritage The Vineyard The Edge New Spring At first I thought the... Read more

Here’s news: Atheists don’t believe in nothing enough to give anything. In London some Christians put ads on the sides of busses and an atheist thought they should put out some atheist ads. Problem is, not enough atheists signed up for the no God ads. You can read about it here. Read more
