Daily Telegraph journalist Damien Thompson doesn’t like Evangelical Christians’ theory that Darwinism lead to Hitler’s death camps. He thinks this is another example of American religious right wing lunacy. I won’t dispute with Damien that there are some seriously nutty right wing Evangelical Christians in America, but I don’t think this particular theory of theirs is that far fetched. The link isn’t a direct one, (Nietzsche actually criticized Darwin’s scientific theories) but he accepted Darwin’s basic cosmological views that there... Read more
Holy Moses! What I love about the man is his meekness. Brought up in the royal household, but kills a man and runs for his life. Learns the name of God at the Burning Bush, but doesn’t flaunt it. Returns to court and steps up to the plate and leads God’s people even though he doesn’t want to. Crosses the Red Sea, defeats his enemies with a mighty miracle and just keeps moving on. Leads a rebellious people with patience... Read more
What I love about Abraham is the child like quality of his faith. God calls him to leave his country and his people to go to a new land, so he up and goes. Mind you, he never gets to enter the land, and only ever gets a glimpse of it, and wanders for the rest of his life living in tents. Then God makes this great promise that he will be a great nation and have children more than... Read more
The Royal Portal at Chartres Cathedral. See Christ enthroned in eternal majesty. See him supported by the mystical winged beasts who are the gospel writers. See him surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, the patriarchs and prophets, the apostles and martyrs. This great image: a vast icon in stone reveals and conceals Christ the Lord. Here in carved stone the humility and the humanity, the divinity and destiny of Christ is revealed. Here in stones a thousand years... Read more
When faced with such inexplicable splendor, any Christian must stop and ask, “What is this about? Why did someone take such trouble, go to such expense and make such sacrifices to create a temple such as this?” The simple Protestant may well protest and say, “But this is money that could be spent on the poor. Jesus was a simple carpenter. How does this honor him? Surely the simple worship of one born in a manger should be simple and... Read more
“If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide. Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existence truly revealed. Only in this friendship do we experience beatuty and liberation. –Homily, Inaugural Mass, 24 April 2005 Read more
My friend James had been brought up in India, so when he asked me in 1985 if I wanted to go to India with him for three weeks I jumped. We went on the tourist trail in Northern India, and wound up in Calcutta. James and I had taken a collection in England for Mother Teresa’s work, so we thought we would stop by the famous mother house to take the check to them in person. Our driver stopped outside... I have, from time to time, been critical of Evangelical Protestants and Anglicans. I don’t apologize for this. I think it’s okay to criticize as long as you try honestly to see your own faults, and accept the criticism of others with good humor. However, I also want to record the good stuff I received from Evangelicals and Anglicans. As a Catholic I regard my faith not as a negation of my Evangelical upbringing and my fifteen years within Anglicanism,... Read more
The BBC is supposed to be one of the world’s finest news organizations, priding itself in objective, balanced and fair reporting. Check out this article on the recent Anglican/ECUSA episcopal consecrations in Africa to see how biased the BBC’s reporting is. This article is typical. Having lived in England for 25 years, I can testify to the constant and universal bias of the BBC. It claims to be free from state control, and while it is not controlled by the... Read more
