It’s nice to see a person with liberal views who actually believes in tolerance and love.
Everyone’s heard about what’s been happening in Indiana with their religious freedom law. Well, here’s one story that is actually positive.
Memories Pizza was one small business that honestly answered a hypothetical question: Would you cater a same-sex wedding? The owners are Christian, so although they gladly serve gay customers, they answered no to being part of a gay wedding.
Cue the hate.
The owners immediately started getting death threats. One lesbian coach at the high school tried to get people to burn the store down. They got so many threats they had to close the restaurant for awhile.
But some people showed they were bigger than their disagreement with the owners’ personal religious views. Reporters from The Blaze started a Go Fund Me account to support the pizzeria, and they got a record-breaking amount of donations.
Including plenty from gay people themselves who didn’t agree with all the threats being made — like Courtney Hoffman.
She gave $20 and wrote a note that says,
She explained more in a radio interview:
My girlfriend and I are small business owners, and we think there is a difference between operating in a public market space and then attaching the name of your business to a private event. Like, if we were asked to set up at an anti-gay marriage rally, I mean, we would have to decline.
Wow, that sounds so reasonable!
Members of the LGBT community really do themselves a huge disservice by responding with hateful protests any time someone disagrees with their lifestyle. As much as the mainstream media tries to pitch this agenda as a movement of “love,” you can see right through their claims of “tolerance” when their actions say otherwise.
You don’t often hear from the reasonable ones who recognize that the freedoms they want have to be offered to everyone – or it’s not really freedom!
That’s why Courtney’s words are so refreshing and wise:
The gay community that we know knows full well what it’s like to be condemned for doing nothing but living your life according to your beliefs. We know so many gay individuals that fully support the freedom of living your life according to your beliefs and feel that freedom extends to everyone, even the people that we don’t agree with.
…if we can remember that differences don’t equal maliciousness, maybe we can move beyond threats of violence and have open discussions of the things that we don’t agree on.
The whole campaign is a great example of the strength of conservative values and those who love to defend freedom. We will not be bullied or intimidated by hateful responses to disagreement. The mainstream media might paint conservatives as a weird, backward minority, but there are a lot more out there than they would admit! Raising over $840,000 in six days is a pretty strong showing of support – just saying.
Lawrence Jones, who helped start the Go Fund Me campaign for Memories Pizza, said the reason they stood up for the shop went way beyond opinions on gay marriage issues:
This is not a conservative, Democrat, civil, or progressive issue. This is about freedom; this is an American issue. We should all protect free speech. I believe we have a moral obligation when Americans are being attacked, when freedom is being attacked, to stand up.
