On Earth as it is in Heaven

I want God’s will done on earth as it is in heaven? That begs the question of how his will is done in heaven, and we come to realize that in heaven there is nothing but His will being done, for there all things are in their proper and rightful places and all things are in harmony and all things fit. Not one discordant note, not one jarring step, not one tiny act of self will or rebellion.

Dante pictures heaven as each soul perfectly delighted to be in his proper place in relationship to God, and therefore in relationship with one another. The souls who are lower down in the celestial hierarchy are not disappointed with their place, but are blissful because they place they have is their proper place and as they exist in that proper place they realize that they too are totally and utterly fulfilled. They have come to the place they were created to be, and in this they not only reach their ultimate destiny and dignity, but they also achieve and are given the ultimate virtue–which is the virtue of humility.

So as we pray for this perfection and harmony of all things to be achieved here on earth as it is in heaven, then we begin to submit ourselves to that place for which we are created, and here is the great liberation of the Christian faith. We rely totally on grace and through that grace we are brought down ‘where we ought to be’, and in being brought down where we ought to be we are raised up where we ought to be.

His will being done on earth as it is in heaven means that we are also in perfect harmony with other people and with all of creation. What bliss this would be, if I could relate to each person with divine harmony! Furthermore, if that is achieved in my life (and I have become a saint thereby) then this grace is infectious. In other words, it is transmitted and shared with other people. The grace of perfection–of living in his will here on earth as it is in heaven–cannot help but be shared with other people. Grace flows to others through us. We are not only the recipients of divine grace, but through this action we are channels of that divine grace to those we meet and with whom we share.

So for the Divine Will to be done on earth as it is in heaven means no more and no less than living here in this present moment in total harmony with the Creator and all of Creation. It is Eden restored, we become Adam and Eve– redeemed and re-created by the graces given through the second Adam and the second Eve. That this is possible here on this earth as it is in heaven is seen in the lives of the saints. Here in this soiled world they have been given the power and grace to live in heaven already.

And if it is seen in the lives of the saints, then it is possible, and if it is possible, then it is possible for me.

How timely this post is! My husband and I have been discussing perfection lately… what it means, what it looks like, and if it is attainable this side of Heaven. Thanks for the insight!

How beautiful an image of Heaven–and Heaven on earth! I've read a little of the work/locutions of the lay apostle Anne, and what you described is actually what she described God showing her of Heaven.

Wonderful descriptio of heaven, to anticipate with hope. Ofcourse there is no concupiscence in heaven (desires of the lower appetities, be they persons, places, or things), but there is on earth, just to sooth the less perfected amongst us (me included in that last batch). Keep doing the next right thing, and if you fail or fall, say sorry and do the next right thiing, and on and on……until we are changed from mortal to immortal.

"…then we begin to submit ourselves to that place for which we are created, and here is the great liberation of the Christian faith."This is a wonderfully reassuring thought, and a great liberation indeed: rather than being pushed and pulled around by the world, simply to be in the right place, to live the life each of us was created for and called to, by God's grace.

Great piece Father except for the abuse of language. I know that you speak a strange, colonial patois but 'to beg the question' does not mean to raise a question that obviously requires an answer. 'Begging the question'(petitio principii) is a form of circular reasoning where an untested assertion is stated and then assumed to be true (= begged).

Thanks, Shadowlands. It was not intended to be unkind, it WAS a great piece. You don't actually know me so perhaps you could give me the 'benefit of the doubt' about my attitude/intention.

I like these reflections you are offering on the Lord's Prayer, Padre. It's always good to get a fresh perspective on the prayers that we say so that we are not just saying words without meaning anything beyond them.

stevieD said'You don't actually know me so perhaps you could give me the 'benefit of the doubt' about my attitude/intention.'You're absolutely right Steve, I've tried to look at my hidden motives in making the comment and the best I can come up with, is that I am insecure regarding my own use of language and grammar, but rather than just admit that, I say something a bit 'snarky' as the yanks would term it. ( I think they say that, anyway). Seems like I have a lot of perfecting still needed in me too. Sorry for having a pop at you.

Shodwlands, a gracious withdrawal of a (possiby justifiable) rebuke. If you think that I'm pedantic then take a look at this, from an American website! – "Too many people have abused BTQ too long, and WE WILL STAND FOR IT NO LONGER! We're marching on Washington. We're petitioning our lawmakers. It's time to stop the horror. We demand that Congress enact a law to regulate BTQ use, levying heavy penalties on any who use it to mean "raise the question" — a $100 fine for the first offense, and 6 months imprisonment for repeated offenses. We have the means, the surveillance equipment necessary to monitor conversations and writings: we need only the will to clean up our language!"(I think $50 and 3 months would be more than enough)

StevieD said:"I think $50 and 3 months would be more than enough"But all this talk of punishment begs the question in me, what if one re-offends (I'm a bit of a St Paul in the continually doing what I don't want to do stakes)? You would need to incorporate English language lessons in the prisons, a grammar rehab program.Or just execute re-offenders? It would save money and begs the question why someone hasn't thought of this already!!

You can tell those chaps at the 'Pedants International Inc.' that if they don't behave their tendencies, I shall join the ever growing and now popular campaign to BAN the apostrophe!! Ha!
