Happy Chinese New Year to all my readers. I know it may seem a bit unusual for a voodoo blog to be talking about a Chinese ceremony, but who doesn’t love a celebration. There are many familiarities to the holiday. Part of the process involves Ancestor veneration, chasing away demons, and even prosperity threshold customs. These customs are similar to those I featured here in the post New Years Traditions.

It is the most important traditional holiday in China, and is celebrated throughout the globe. The official holiday lasts seven days, but the unofficial festivities aren’t considered over until the lantern festival. This year the date for the lantern festival is Feb 11, 2017.

This New Year marks the year of the Cock , or Rooster. Specifically this year is ruled by a fire rooster. According to chinesehoroscope-2017.com this year is to be dominated by “the orientation towards progress, honor and maximum integrity, and people learning to temper their ardor.” Part of the annual celebration involves blessings by a Lion and a Dragon for prosperity, protection, and increase. This is acted out in a beautiful performance. See for yourselves.

Happy New Year or Gung Hay Fat Choy !
