Christmas is all about Jesus. He was the baby born to live for us, to die for us and to rise again for us.  The magi brought spices for burial as one of their presents to the new baby. Jesus raises us with him, shares his life with us, and will come back for us one day.  Understanding more about this amazing gospel of grace can only be good for us.   Why not buy a copy of the updated... Read more

The great preacher, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones said about John Newton, ”he says it all perfectly” before quoting one of Newton’s less well-known hymns. These words are surely the perfect explanation of how faith grows in the human heart.  I have updated the hymn very lightly to modern English:  I asked the Lord that I might grow In faith and love and every grace Might more of His salvation know And seek more earnestly His face ’Twas He who taught me... Read more

10 reasons your church would reject the Apostle Paul, and why that says more about us than him. He had a violent past, was frequently jailed, often sick, constantly travelling, doctrinally he doesn’t fit any modern mould, emotionally raw, sometimes abrasive, not married, financially unconventional, and utterly uncommitted to our institutions. No wonder Roland Allen’s book Missionary Methods: St Paul’s or Ours? asked whether we’ve replaced the biblical model with a cautious, controlling management structure. Read more

Your problem is not all in your head. But that doesn't mean it reflects reality. The alerts created by our bodies are merely like warning lights on the dashboard of a car. They tell us something needs our attention, but they don't give us absolute truth.  When people say "follow your heart," they are giving you the worst possible advice, because our bodies lie. This article is for all of us: the healthy, the anxious or depressed, and the chronically unwell.  Read more

Spoiler Free Reflections on our Global Captivation with Deception and "Murder." I’ve recently become obsessed with The Traitors, a TV show about suspicion, deception, betrayal, the "murder" of the faithful, and the unmasking of traitors. But beneath the entertainment lies something far deeper: a mirror to the human heart. Why do we love watching others lie? And what if the ultimate traitor isn’t in the castle at all, but within us? Read more

Those who are spared public disgrace, and whose worst deviations are known only to God and themselves, have great reason to give thanks. At times God shows us how much he can do for us. At other times He shows us how little we can do for ourselves and that we cannot stand without him. Read more

To be a partaker of the divine nature is not, of course, to become God. That cannot be. The essence of Deity is not to be participated in by the creature. Between the creature and the Creator there must ever be a gulf fixed in respect of essence; but as the first man Adam was made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), so we, by the renewal of the Holy Spirit, are in a yet diviner sense made in the image of the Most High, and are partakers of the divine nature . . . in as lofty a sense as can be conceived, short of our being absolutely divine. Read more

Because the message of the Gospel can appeal strongly to human emotion, it is sadly no surprise that many people seem to respond and even claim to be Christians at first, but later fall away.  The seed might spring up and look green for a while.  But if there is no depth in the heart for it to take root, it will surely wither away. A tree is most valuable when it is heavy with ripe fruit, but has a special beauty when it is covered in blossom. At the beginning of our spiritual journey it is like springtime.  We are in bloom, and by the grace and blessing of the Gardener we will bear fruit in old age. Our faith may be weak, but our hearts are warm. Read more
