The young father of four lowered his vessel deep into the well, hesitantly expecting the rope in his hands to tighten and the bucket to submerge beneath the water. Instead, the cord relaxed and he heard the unsettling sound of his bucket hitting the sand far below.

Thunk.

Rasna sighed as he pulled up the rope, his suspicions confirmed: His well had finally run dry.

Sand in Their Water

The well Rasna dug on his property had served his family faithfully for years. As time passed, however, they noticed a problem: Their water grew more and more cloudy with each bucketful they collected.

The family began storing the murky water in containers to let the sand and other debris settle at the bottom before using it. Time consuming as this simple filtering procedure was, the family managed to survive . . . until the well dried up completely.

Left with no other choice and a severe need for water, the family began the backbreaking task of hauling water from a source far from their home, as many other villagers were also doing. Then one Sunday, Rasna decided to talk to Pastor Payas. Rasna had developed a friendship with the Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor and had come to know the Lord after he heard Pastor Payas share his own testimony of God’s grace. Maybe he could do something about their situation.

Gospel For Asia Well Benefits 25 Families

Pastor Payas assured Rasna he would do all he could to help him and his family. The two men prayed and waited for the Lord’s answer. When a survey of Rasna’s village showed the people’s need for clean, accessible water, a Jesus Well was installed and dedicated for the use of the entire village only a short time later. The well now blesses 25 families with clean water for their daily needs. Because its location is near Rasna’s home, he and his family members often use this opportunity to share what God has done in their lives with the people who draw water from the well.

“I am thankful to my church for the installation of this Jesus Well,” Rasna says. “I cannot help the people of my locality, but our church has looked into the needs of the common man.”

“The local people . . . now know that our church performs good works and cares about the development of society,” Pastor Payas says.

Malaria is the most common mosquito-borne disease, claiming more than 400,000 lives worldwide every year — mostly children under five, says the just-released report by mission agency Gospel for Asia (GFA World).

“Without proper prevention or treatment, the consequences of a simple mosquito bite are very serious in many places around the world,” said Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founder Dr. K.P. Yohannan, whose Texas-based organization is on the ground across Asia in thousands of cities and villages. “Unfortunately, it’s a war that needs to be won and won and won — it rages on every day in places like Asia.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) says mosquitoes actually could be responsible for “several million deaths” every year. World Mosquito Day, observed annually on Aug. 20, commemorates the breakthrough discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between people. So far, there’s no vaccine for malaria.

More than half the world’s population is at risk of contracting dengue — a raging fever that claims 40,000 lives every year.

Annoying Bite Could Be Deadly

“For most of us in the West, a mosquito bite is an itchy annoyance,” Yohannan said, “but for hundreds of thousands across Asia, it’s deadly.”

Millions across the region can’t afford vaccines against mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus if available — or even basic preventive measures, such as insect repellent or window screens.

Every year, Gospel for Asia (GFA World) and other organizations distribute thousands of free mosquito-repelling bed nets to impoverished families, students in hostels, and agricultural workers in endemic areas who are among the most at-risk of getting bitten at night.

So far, Gospel for Asia (GFA World) has distributed more than 1.3 million nets across Asia, costing around $10 a piece. Nets are the most effective way to prevent potentially deadly bites when mosquitoes are most active at dusk and daybreak.

“Our response is driven by the love of God,” said Yohannan, author of the new book Never Give Up. “Mosquito reduction efforts by organizations such as Gospel for Asia (GFA World) are one of the evidences that fulfill Christ’s imperative to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’.”

“For so many children in Asia, this Christmas morning will be like any other day — scavenging through trash piles for scraps and anything they can recycle, just to help feed their family,” Yohannan said.

Feast — And ‘The Least’

“As families throughout the world prepare for their Christmas feast, we’re asking them to also remember the least — the poor whom Jesus called ‘the least of these.'”

“‘Forgotten Christmas’ is a time to reflect on the real difference we’re making in the world, especially in light of the massive amount spent on the holiday in the West,” Yohannan said.

Last year, Americans spent more than a trillion dollars on Christmas, an average of over $1,500 per family, and purchased more than 30 million Christmas trees.

Forgotten Christmas is about “making Christmas Christ-centered again,” said Yohannan, whose faith-based organization has served the poor in Asia for four decades.

“A single gift of compassion can help communicate the love of God to one person, one family, or even an entire village,” said the missions leader and author of Never Give Up. “We can so easily forget the real reason for the season is putting Christ at the center and giving others hope.”

A Gospel for Asia Jesus Well Provides Hope to a Needy Community

In the heat of midsummer, Gospel for Asia pastor Madhukar traveled to a neighboring village where some members of his church resided. He wanted to visit fellow believers and connect with other villagers. However, when Pastor Madhukar arrived, he realized the Lord had much more for him to do than just meet new people and make conversation.

A Thirsty Village

Deep in Asia, there was a small riverside village whose inhabitants followed the traditional religious teachings and worked as farmers. The village was very poor, and there was a severe water shortage, which forced residents to obtain their drinking water from nearby ponds, lakes and rivers. Because this water was contaminated, many of the villagers had become sick from drinking the water they collected. They knew very well that they needed fresh water, but they could find none.

When Pastor Madhukar visited the village, he immediately recognized the dire need for clean water. People had even been hospitalized after drinking the contaminated water nearby. Pastor Madhukar wanted to help; he shared with them about the advantages of installing a Jesus Well to supply clean water.

“If it’s possible, please help us to get it,” the villagers responded with hope.

Discussing villages gripped by poverty, the severe water shortage, water borne diseases, and a Gospel for Asia Jesus Well that provides hope. — After years of relying on contaminated lakes, ponds and rivers for drinking water, villagers enjoy their new Jesus Well, which provides clean water for the entire village.

A Well of Living Water

Pastor Madhukar soon received permission to install a Jesus Well. When it was completed, the local people rejoiced in how the Lord provided for their most basic need.

Having enjoyed the bounty that flows from the well, some villagers experienced the abundant love and provision of God, and eagerly invite Pastor Madhukar to pray for them whenever he visits.

Talak, 45, operated his own roadside business as a key maker, but for it to be successful, he had to overcome a mound of difficulties.

Discussing Talak, his medical condition, his son influenced by bad company, and the prayer of a Gospel for Asia Pastor that unlocked blessings — Like the man pictured, Talak has learned the power of prayer and its effectiveness in overcoming life’s challenges.

In Asia, making keys can provide a decent income. However, with no guiding regulations in the industry, it is up to each individual key maker to display integrity and discern whether a potential customer is the rightful owner of the key to be duplicated—or a thief. Due to the challenges of his profession, Talak sometimes had to turn down work and, consequently, income.

His work and ability to procure income for his family suffered also because of a medical condition that caused uncontrollable seizures, which did not wait for an “opportune” time and location. Such incidents caused Talak to fall in the middle of the street or throw stones at others like a madman. This didn’t help attract customers or bolster Talak’s business. Talak took medication, but it did not prevent the seizures.

Talak’s elder son also worked as a key maker. Instead of supporting the family and alleviating Talak’s troubles, however, his son spent his earnings buying drugs and hanging out with bad company.

For all Talak’s efforts, it appeared he and his family were destined to scrape by in poverty, with life’s bare necessities and exhaustion as the only rewards for all his work.

Power of Prayer with Gospel for Asia Pastor

One day, Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Ebin and a few members from his church encountered Talak beside the road with his tools, looking for work. He was tired, frustrated and dejected. Once again, he had no customers.

Talking to Talak, the team learned of his many difficulties. They told Talak about Jesus, who was able to take all Talak’s burdens and provide for his needs. Talak eagerly listened, their words refreshing his weary soul.

Talak welcomed the group of believers to his home, where they continued to visit with Talak and his family. From then on, Pastor Ebin visited regularly to pray with Talak, his wife and his younger children.

As they prayed, Talak’s health and outlook improved. He experienced the healing power of Jesus in his life, and his worries lessened.

Initially, Talak’s older son chose not to attend the prayer meetings. When he fell ill one day, however, Pastor Ebin was asked to pray for his recovery. Through the pastor’s prayer, God restored the young man’s health, and Talak’s elder son began to show an interest in what Pastor Ebin shared with his family.

He started to join the prayer meetings, and Talak’s entire family regularly attended weekly worship services at Pastor Ebin’s church. The more they learned about Jesus, the more they wanted to know. One by one, they decided to enter a personal relationship with Him.

Shower of Blessings

Over the next year, Talak’s health continued to improve, until one day he was completely healed from his ailments.

Then Talak received an unexpected blessing: an additional source of income! At a Christmas gift distribution organized by his church, Talak was blessed with a tricycle cart. The cart allowed him to earn more income by transporting goods.

What once seemed like a life destined for hardship transformed into a life filled with blessings. Poverty is no longer the banner over Talak and his family. Instead, they have a testimony of prayer—and of life in abundance.

So far this year, more than 1.2 million deaths worldwide have been attributed to the pandemic, but it’s likely millions more will die from exposure to diseases carried by human waste — diseases that don’t make the headlines.

As millions across the developing world relieve themselves in the open, raw sewage spawns a multitude of deadly diseases. Excrement attracts flies that quickly spread diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, typhoid, polio, and hepatitis A.

UNICEF, the U.N. children’s agency, says 2.2 million people worldwide will die this year from diarrhea alone — nearly double the number of COVID-19 deaths recorded so far.

Many of those deaths — mostly children under five — could be avoided if the world’s poor had access to safe, sanitary toilets and hand-washing facilities, says Gospel for Asia (GFA World), a Texas-based Christian organization that builds thousands of new toilets across Asia every year.

World Toilet Day, an annual awareness event, is Nov. 19.

Report Reveals Toilet Misery

The misery of the 4.2 billion people — over half the world’s population — who don’t have a toilet at home, or safe sanitation, is revealed in a shocking new Gospel for Asia (GFA World) report, Fight Against Open Defecation Continues, marking World Toilet Day on Nov. 19.

Open defecation is when people go to the toilet outside in the open — in the street, in a park, or by a river, for example — a common practice in many poor countries. Just a fleck of human feces might contain 100 million viruses, one million bacteria, and 1,000 parasites that can be transmitted through cuts, skin pores, contaminated water or food.

Even when people have access to public toilets, they’re often unsafe, conditions can be horrible, and many people don’t use them. In many Asia megacities, latrines often flush into open drains that flow along the streets.

“For billions of people around the world, simply going to the toilet is degrading, unhygienic and even dangerous,” said Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founder K.P. Yohannan. In 2018, a three-year-old South African boy fell into a feces-filled pit latrine and drowned. Others risk being attacked or sexually assaulted while using public toilets at night, so they relieve themselves in the open instead.

“It’s easy for us in America to never give it a second thought, because we don’t have to walk a mile or more to the nearest public toilet or pit latrine,” said Yohannan, author of Never Give Up.

‘Catastrophic Health Consequences’

The global “toilet tragedy” has caught the attention of Hollywood actor Matt Damon and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who’ve highlighted the catastrophic health consequences.

Dozens of international agencies are working on innovative solutions, including solar-powered toilets that convert human waste into fertilizer.

Last year, Gospel for Asia (GFA World) workers built more than 5,400 toilets and latrines across Asia and educated communities about the importance of using them. “I never imagined that we’d measure the impact of our Christian faith by the number of toilets we build,” said Yohannan, “but the reality is that people see from our actions that God’s people really do care about them.”

Gospel for Asia Helps Leprosy Patients ‘Stay Alive’

World Leprosy Day is commemorated each year on the last Sunday of January. The aim of the observance day is to raise awareness about leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease) and its cure. For many Gospel for Asia workers and pastors, the day is also an opportunity to show God’s love and care to people who are often marginalized by society.

Leprosy Colonies Honored with Medical Care

In one region, a Gospel for Asia (GFA) medical center organized a medical treatment camp in honor of World Leprosy Day. Two doctors provided free check-ups, medicine and other medical attention to men, women and children living with leprosy and battling other illnesses. Throughout the day, the medical center provided treatment to 140 people, all at no cost to the patients.

In addition, several Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastors and their local fellowships of believers observed World Leprosy Day by providing clothing items for six different groups of people living with leprosy. In total, they provided leprosy colony residents with 600 warm blankets, 100 night dresses and 600 lungis (a traditional garment worn primarily by men resembling a tubular-shaped skirt).

This simple act of kindness made a significant impact on people struggling with leprosy. One woman explained how she never imagined God would rescue her from her misery, but He did.

“When there was no bed… hospital authorities released me from the hospital. I was not able to take care of my body because I lost all my fingers,” she described.

“One day, when I was counting my days on the earth, God opened the way [for me to stay alive] through a Gospel for Asia (GFA) leprosy worker who used to come and clean my wounds and gave me the love of God and care. Now, I am completely cured by the grace of God and the unique help of [the church].”

Shared Meal Touches Hearts

In a different region, Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Ladan and a group of believers prepared for World Leprosy Day a year in advance. During a prayer meeting, Pastor Ladan developed a great passion for sharing the love of God with the poor in his community. He shared this desire with the group.

They began to save money throughout the year in order to bless the poor with clothes and shoes. Once they collected a sizable sum, they shared their idea with local store owners, who then sold clothes and shoes to the believers at a discounted price. The team was ready to bless the poor in their community just in time for their World Leprosy Day program.

The program included a special delivery of the recently purchased goods to a nearby leprosy colony where 120 families lived. Pastor Ladan and the believers distributed two clothing items and a pair of shoes to each person. They also sang songs and shared that Jesus not only loves the sick, but He also can heal them. The believers took time to talk and pray with those battling leprosy.

Afterward, the team cooked a meal and ate with the families living in the colony. The patients were especially touched when the group of believers shared a meal with them.

A supervisor in the leprosy colony explained that groups would come and offer gifts to the patients, but when this group of believers came, it was “the first time people came and ate with us.”

One of the patients in the colony described the impact of the visit.

“When I was infected by leprosy, I was even rejected by my own family, and they began to hate me,” he said. “You are a stranger to me; however, you came and showed your kindness to us.”

Although leprosy often carries a stigma that keeps those carrying the disease isolated from family and community, World Leprosy Day gives an opportunity to spread healing and hope. Leprosy—and loneliness—can be cured. Gospel for Asia (GFA) medical camps, pastors and other national workers offer an answer for both.

World Malaria Day — an annual awareness event — is April 25 each year, and malaria-fighting organizations like Gospel for Asia (GFA) are eager to see that the ongoing battle against the mosquito-spread menace doesn’t get ignored or forgotten because of COVID-19.

Almost half the world’s population is at risk from malaria — spread by infected mosquitoes — and children under five years are the most vulnerable, says a new Gospel for Asia (GFA World) report, titled Mosquito-Driven Scourge Touches Even Developed Nations.

Despite the effectiveness of anti-malarial drugs like chloroquine — recently touted as a treatment for coronavirus — malaria still kills more than 400,000 people worldwide every year, more than double the global coronavirus death toll to date.

Each year, there are more than 200 million reported cases of malaria, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. So far, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide stands at about 2.5 million and rising.

Mosquito Nets: Ten Dollar Lifesavers

Describing malaria as a “deadly scourge,” GFA World’s report is one of a series of in-depth special reports by the Texas-based mission agency examining critical global issues, promoting awareness, and challenging people to respond. A life-saving mosquito net costs as little as $10 — but that’s more than many of Asia’s poorest families, who earn less than $2 a day, can afford.

“For many years. . . teams across South Asia have been engaged in malaria prevention,” said Dr. Daniel, director of Believers Eastern Church’s medical ministry in Asia. “These committed local workers, often trekking miles on foot, distribute free mosquito nets — some 360,000 last year alone – to prevent malaria infection and provide clean water and community sanitation to help reduce mosquito breeding grounds.”

Although malaria has a lower mortality rate than coronavirus, the financial toll of malaria is huge. According to estimates, malaria costs the African economy $12 billion every year through healthcare and loss of productivity and investment.

With much of South Asia currently under COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, Gospel for Asia (GFA World) is supporting outreaches to those most severely impacted — including impoverished day laborers unable to earn money for food. Teams are providing free meals as well as mosquito nets.

“Even in lockdown amid COVID-19, we in the West have the opportunity to pray at home and support local workers in the field to save lives,” said India-born Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founder Dr. K.P. Man’s Health Restored After Drinking Water from Gospel for Asia Jesus Well

Yohannan, which inspired numerous charities like Gospel for Asia Canada – Discussing Sabar and his village, the daily reality of unclean drinking water that far too many experience, and the Gospel for Asia Jesus Well that restored life and health.

Imagine for just a moment: The water that flows through your filtered refrigerator to your glass of ice or that pours from your sink faucet to the cooking pan is gone.

Instead, you heft a bucket in each hand and walk to the closest river, which is 300 meters (0.19 miles) away. When you return home with the heavy buckets, you finally take a deep drink to quench your thirst. You know the water you just drank could also contain disease-causing bacteria. But is there any other option?

For far too many, like 60-year-old Sabar, the answer is no. Drinking unclean water is a daily reality.

Struggle for Clean Water

Every day, Sabar trekked to the river to collect his water supply. Unfortunately, the water was not safe for consumption. Sabar often fell sick and his overall health suffered. But there was no other source of water for his village, so he continued to use the unfiltered river water.

One day, as Sabar made his way to the river, he met Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers Jamir and Vazir. They greeted him kindly and talked with him about how Jesus can provide for all his needs.

Naturally, Sabar thought of his village’s need for clean water. After all, he wasn’t the only one who suffered from the unclean water.

“If your Jesus will provide our needs, it will be very helpful to us,” Sabar told Jamir and Vazir.

Water from a Different Source

After the men prayed with Sabar, Jamir conducted a preliminary survey of the village area and took Sabar’s request for clean water to Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Tusar. Recognizing the village’s need for a good water source, Pastor Tusar began the process of installing a Jesus Well.

Jesus Wells provide communities with clean water, safe for cooking and drinking. They play a vital role in helping prevent disease caused by water contamination.

Soon the well in Sabar’s village was complete and ready for use. Now, instead of walking to the river every day, Sabar has a well near his home. The water is pure, and Sabar no longer suffers from the effects of drinking the contaminated river water. His health has greatly improved, and the well has been a blessing for the entire village.

Sabar saw God’s provision firsthand through the installation of the Jesus Well. He learned he could truly trust Jesus to provide for his needs. For Sabar, the gift of one well pours forth blessings of fresh water, good health and a growing relationship with Jesus.

Yohannan – three of the best-known and most influential Christian leaders in the western church, calling for an end to bickering and bitter conflict in the church — warning that it’s tearing apart the “family of God.” Francis Chan, best-selling author and former California megachurch pastor, cited a surge in blogs attacking fellow believers online, as well as acrimonious church splits over non-essential differences. “It looks like this family is in shambles, and who would want to join (it)?” he said. Urging believers to “get back to love,” Chan — author of Crazy Love — said segments of the church in America are “at war” and “screaming at each other” instead of seeking to be “in one accord,” like the early church in the Book of Acts.

Yohannan, who launched Texas-based Gospel for Asia (GFA World) four decades ago, drew attention for his groundbreaking book Revolution in World Missions that shook up the traditional Western approach to overseas missions. Some have accused him of being too critical and judgmental of the Western church.

Love: ‘Greatest Doctrine’

“My place in life is no more to even think (judgmentally) towards other people,” Yohannan said. “Love is the greatest of all doctrines. When that is violated, we become (like the) Pharisees.”

Hanegraaff — author of Truth Matters, Life Matters More and a well-known radio show host, stirred up a hornets’ nest when he converted to Eastern Orthodox Christianity three years ago — said: “It can boil down to… in essentials, unity; non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.”

In the wake of stinging criticism aimed at him, Hanegraaff said he’s learning humility. “I’m often labeled the ‘Bible Answer Man’… but I am not the authority.”

The three leaders have been heavily criticized online and in other venues for challenging the status quo of modern Christianity, which Chan says focuses too much on “charismatic personalities” and “popularity contests.”

As a result, Chan says, some in evangelical circles have branded them “heretics.” “Many lovers of Christ, that are part of his true church, are misunderstood,” said Chan. “All of us know in part and see in a mirror dimly. How do we become ‘perfectly one’?”
