The Daily Telegraph reports here that American troops have tiny Bible references inscribed in their special hi tech rifle sights. The company that provides the sights etched the Bible verse references into the sights.

The verses are: 2 Corinthians 4:6 “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

and John 8:12

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

There seems to be a fuss about this because it makes the American war into a religious crusade and it will make the Muslims angrier than hornets and we all know that American soldiers aren’t fighting a religious war.

But the verses themselves seem pretty harmless. When I first read the article I wondered whether the verses were something about “smiting the enemy and blessed are those who dash thy little ones against the stones.” Verses about light for night sight lighted sights surely can’t do anyone harm?

But it does raise a very interesting question. Just how religious is our war against Muslims? The Taleban certainly consider their fight to be a religious crusade. Let’s face it, they consider us to be the Great Satan and want to blow us off the face of the earth.
The more I learn about the Taleban the more I think we’re doing the right thing, and I’m   inclined to think that perhaps we could do with a little bit of the old ‘Fight the Good fight’ the church militant, ‘onward Christian soldiers’ and all that, and if a few inspiring Bible verses help, then good for them.
