Creativity Magick: The Intersection of Art & Ritual

Creativity Magick: The Intersection of Art & Ritual September 5, 2023

Recently, I had the honor of sitting on a panel to talk about how creativity and magick overlap with other Llewellyn authors. We discussed a variety of ways this intersection showed up for us, both in everyday life and in the intentional, ritualized making of art.

In the discussion, I talked about my method of ritualizing my art practice so I could go into a trance and receive inspiration from the creative spirit, sometimes known as the muse.

This practice is something I had been doing for many years in my art, and when I realized that there wasn’t a book about it in our community, I wrote a book called Inspiring Creativity Through Magick.

I was joined by Laura Tempest Zakroff, Mickie Mueller, and Raechel Henderson for a deep dive into this topic. Our discussion was recorded.

One of the most poignant questions we got was about feeling guilty about the desire to create art when there were so many other things that needed to be done.

We came to a consensus that everyone deserves to have some art time, and often, taking that time to make art can give you more satisfaction and joy with the other parts of your life. Even a small moment of creating, a few times each week, can make a big difference. That’s how I started. Now, I’m able to carve more time out for it because I saw the benefit in it.

We also talked about how inspiring music is for us, whether that’s ambient soundscapes to create a general artsy vibe, dramatic pagan Viking-style music that inspires dance and other intense arts, or something like Witch House music for a downtempo trance state. These kinds of music can help us find the right mindset for the art and channel the energy we desire into our art projects.

I hope that you find some inspiration for your art from the video and the links. I believe that we should use whatever form of inspiration works to help us reach that trance state and get inspiration from the creative spirit.

For more about that, check out the books of the authors on the presentation. You can get a signed copy of my book, Inspiring Creativity Through Magick, at my website.

I’m also teaching an interactive course about ritualizing your creativity as part of the Gathering of the Witches online conference. We’ll discuss creative correspondences, meeting your creative spirit, releasing your art into the world, and much more. I’ll have a Q&A part to help anyone who feels stuck in their creation process. I’ve been there, and I have solutions.

Happy creating! Love, Astrea
