Movie Club: Honeymoon Travels Discussion

Movie Club: Honeymoon Travels Discussion May 3, 2014

I enjoyed this movie a lot. It was simple and sweet, not as dramatic as some Bollywood (I love dramatic films too, though!).

I particularly liked the variety of couples and love stories. It showcased the wide variety of ways people end up married in modern India.

Maybe it’s weird, but I most closely related to Aspi and Zara. I think Brad and I are that in sync even though we haven’t been together since childhood. The dance sequence with them was also incredible. Even though people tend to focus on the later dance scene on the boat, I found this ballroom dance mix mesmerizing. I could have watched them dance for hours! The song they dance to has an interesting Latin flavor to it while still being in Hindi.

The best part, to me, hands down, was Naheed’s speech at the end about love. That was powerful stuff. The acrtress brought a lot of gravity and weight to this character.

There were two couples whose story didn’t feel resolved at the end: Pinky/Vicky and Madhu/Bunty. I wish we knew more about how they were going to deal with their issues.

It was interesting to see the ways in which clothing can be used to control. Milly’s life was really constrained by her being expected to wear a sari at all times. Despite how gorgeous she looked in them, I do agree that wearing it needed to be more her choice and she needed to be allowed to have some freedom of choice in her clothing.

Oscar and Naheed are a couple to admire. They have a very strong bond and they can communicate with just a few looks between them.

For next week, let’s watch one of my favorites. A much more dramatic love story! Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
