Nicki Minaj Speaks Out About Her Abortion: “It has haunted me all my life” January 9, 2015

Yesterday, I posted about Duck Dynasty wife Lisa Robertson who confessed she had an abortion which she’s regretted every day of her life.   I think it’s brave for women who have made the decision to have an abortion talk about it openly… it undermines the “abortion is no big deal” mantra that feminists have tried to shove down our throat.

In Rolling Stone magazine this month, rapper Nicki Minaj reveals that she also had an abortion.  “I thought I was going to die,” she said.  “It was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. . . It has haunted me all my life.”

She even raps about it on her new album, Pinkprint in the song “All Things Go”:

“My child with Aaron, would’ve have been sixteen, any minute.”

Ashley McGuire points out that Minaj is just one of many celebs who have expressed extreme emotional pain over their abortions.  She writes:

[Minaj] follows in the footsteps of Toni Braxton, who recently revealed in her memoir, “Unbreak My Heart,” that her abortion filled her with guilt and remorse. She writes that she felt like God was punishing her for her abortion when her subsequent son was diagnosed with autism.

Minaj and Braxton are in the company of other celebrities like Sharon Osborne who have had abortions and describe the experience sorrowfully. Osborne’s description is strikingly similar to Minaj’s. She said, “I would never recommend it to anyone because it comes back to haunt you.”

For one of pop music’s tougher and more crass female singers, Minaj gets touchingly vulnerable in her recent interviews, telling Complex magazine in November that, “If I’m done with my fifth album and I don’t have a child by then, no matter how much money I have, I would be disappointed as a woman because I feel like I was put here to be a mother.”

No doubt her disappointment would be compounded by the chance to be a mother that was so violently taken from her.

Minaj is still pro-choice, but I think it’s important that women realize that even the liberal women still agree with us: abortion is painful and has terrible emotional consequences.  As McGuire writes:

Planned Parenthood head Cecile Richards recently wrote that having an abortion “wasn’t a difficult decision.” Hanna Rosin casually told her abortion story for Slate and proposed that the left needs to embrace abortion as a “social good.” Writing in The New York Times (“This is What an Abortion Looks Like”), Merritt Tierce shrugged off abortion as a “common five-to-15 minute procedure” most commonly elected by a woman in her first trimester who simply “doesn’t want to be pregnant or have a child.”

Oh, and then there was this woman who filmed her own abortion to de-stigmatize it… and possible to get famous. Anyway, I appreciate Nicki for speaking out about her experience. Read more on the Patheos Faith and Family Channel, fan me on Facebook and follow this blog on Twitter!
