NLQ Question of the Week: Why So Many Rules About Sex?

NLQ Question of the Week: Why So Many Rules About Sex? February 16, 2017

QuestionoftheweekThis is a series we run every Thursday. The questions are things that people who may not know much about the Quiverfull movement or even Fundamentalist or Evangelical Christianity ask about the lifestyle. Examining some of the questions involving Quiverfull theology and life can only shine a light on the toxic nature of this lifestyle choice.

This week an article by a former orthodox Jewish woman in the Richard Dawkins Foundation blog wrote about the rituals of menstruation and post-menstruation that involve married women taking their panties to a rabbi to be evaluated if they are clean enough to resume sexual relations – I Had to Take My Dirty Panties to a Rabbi.

While this is not a thing in Quiverfull nationwide there are those sects that do practice ideas from the Old Testament such as menstruation huts and the rules of sexual intercourse after having a baby, rules of clean and unclean. This is along with a long list of rules about sex, being available on demand to your husband, not being allowed to say no to sex and other rules. Michelle Duggar has used some of the Orthodox Jew Old Testament rules herself – giving an interview where she said she could not resume sex for 80 days after the birth of a girl while the rule for after having a boy was only 40 days.

Why do you think there are so many rules governing sexual relations in Quiverfull?

Shhh, no one tell Larry Solomon of Biblical Gender Roles, or Vaughn Ohlman of Let Them Marry or Steven Anderson about the panty inspections as I can sadly enough see these β€˜Good Patriarchs’ β„’ adding this to their lists of must dos.
