Madira lay bedridden and hopeless. The witch doctors had given up. The medical treatments didn’t work. And now, six years of pain marked her life. Her thoughts yearned and searched for some ray of hope—something that would bring her healing. Then her thoughts turned to an event that happened 16 years ago.

She called her son over. “Now listen to me clearly,” she told him, “and do what I say.”

When the Witch Doctors Gave Up

Madira’s family life wasn’t perfect, but they pressed on through the hard times. They grew more financially stable over the years, especially after her husband, Chakor, got a job as a police officer. With his new income, they were even able to build a better house for their family of five.

Madira learned in her childhood to honor, respect and adore her traditional religion. She was devoted to her gods and goddesses and turned to them for help in times of need. Such a time came for Madira when she experienced a peculiar, unknown sickness. Pain wracked her body, and normal movements brought deep discomfort.

Chakor gave his wife the best medical help he could, hoping she would recover quickly. But months dragged on to years, and her condition remained unchanged. They had no peace. Chakor and Madira did everything the witch doctors prescribed in hopes of finding relief from what was attacking Madira’s body. After six years, even the witch doctors gave up. They said her sickness was beyond their control.

Discovering the Hidden Treasure of God’s Word

In desperation, Madira’s mind turned to the day, many years ago, when her brother had given her a special gift. It was time to unveil the hidden treasure and try something new.

Now she wondered, with a new sense of courage,
who was this Jesus?

Pulling her son aside, she said, “My son, we have done everything we could, but nothing is working. Now, listen to me clearly and do what I say. Bring the Bible, which was given by my brother, and read it for me. I would like to listen to it.”

As her son took the old, neglected book in his hands and read the holy words of God something happened: The moment Madira heard what her son read aloud, pain left her aching body. Madira slept through the night, and she could move without struggle or discomfort. Madira now had a peace she hadn’t felt before. The words brought healing to her weary body. Now she wondered, with a new sense of courage, who was this Jesus?

After that day, Madira and her family searched for a church where they could learn more about God, whose written Word caused such an immediate change in Madira’s condition. Maybe this God would completely heal her?

Learning About the Healer

One day they met Seth, one of our national missionaries serving in their area. When they explained their problems, he shared about the love of Jesus and told them how Jesus is the Great Healer and Restorer.

“If you believe in the name of Jesus Christ, you will be healed,” he told them.

Discouraged after years of disappointing treatments, they responded, “We have done everything, but nothing is working out.”

GFA World founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan — When Seth, a national missionary, introduced the family to his pastor, they all were encouraged, and the congregation began to pray for Madira earnestly. Soon, the Lord healed her completely!

Seth encouraged them not to worry, because God is able to make impossible things possible for those who believe in His name. After finding no hope elsewhere, the family decided they wanted to go to church to learn about the love of God.

Finding Comfort Through the Body of Christ

Their new friend introduced them to Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastors and believers, and many prayers rose up on Madira’s behalf. From that day, Madira felt great relief. The believers prayed for her and her family regularly, and within a few weeks, Madira received complete healing! God had answered their prayers.

Now Madira is a testimony of God’s might and of His Word, which remains living and powerful. After 16 years of keeping a treasure, they finally understood its precious value. God waited patiently for them to realize His awesome love for them, and now they are living in His life and hope.

Lonely Man Revived by the Turn of a Dial to Gospel for Asia Radio Program

Kvanh grew up in a harsh mountain climate, toiling away alongside his family to cultivate land for their livelihood. Unable to go to school, Kvanh spent his time studying religious books with his father.

He found hope in the message, and when he met a national missionary, Kvanh felt he was meeting a friend.

When Kvanh was 20, his family pressured him to marry—something he knew he wasn’t ready for, but it was impossible for him to fight against the tradition of marrying young. The fear of not being able to provide for a wife and build a happy home gnawed at his heart. As a young husband, Kvanh worked day and night in the fields to support his wife. He even picked up additional labor jobs when he could find them, but his wife often complained that he didn’t do enough. Her criticism made Kvanh despair of their marriage ever being happy, though he loved his wife dearly. One day, Kvanh’s wife left him for another man, and his nightmare became reality.

Loneliness, anger and mental anguish consumed Kvanh. Afraid the young man might go insane, Kvanh’s family scraped together enough money to send him abroad to escape the memories that haunted him.

Kvanh found himself in a bustling city with millions of people—yet still alone. He found work in the construction industry and abandoned himself to a hedonistic life, satisfying the urges of today in exchange for a peaceful future.

Moving Home, yet Loneliness Followed

After 25 years of wasting his life one day at a time, Kvanh wearied of carrying on in this way. He decided to go back home. With the small amount he had managed to save, Kvanh opened a small shop in his childhood village. His shop, not very popular, left Kvanh sitting alone with a lot of time to think. He often turned on the radio for company, spending hours with the radio hosts of various shows.

One day, while switching the radio dial, he heard someone say the name “Jesus.” He paused his scrolling and listened intently about remission of sins through the sacrifice of Jesus. His heart burned within him as the radio host taught about the very questions that Kvanh had been struggling with for so long. He learned that cleansing of sin was possible and peace with God attainable, the very things that had always eluded Kvanh.

As the preacher kept sharing, he quoted a verse that burst within Kvanh like a shower of fireworks: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Kvanh felt tears streaming down his face as he realized God loved him and made a way for his sins to be forgiven through His Son.

Companions for the Journey

Kvanh wanted to know more about Jesus who did so much for him, but he wasn’t sure how. Then, one day when he was sitting at his shop waiting for the customers who seldom came, a man approached him and introduced himself as Pastor Milit from the nearby church. Kvanh, recognizing the name of the church, asked the man if he knew the radio speaker who had impacted his life so much. Indeed, Pastor Milit did know him!

Kvanh felt an instant connection to the friend of the radio preacher, and he shared his life story with Pastor Milit, detailing the ups and downs and the valleys of darkness he had walked through all alone. Pastor Milit’s heart grew tender for this man who had lived his life seeking pleasure but always had found loneliness instead.

Kvanh and Pastor Milit became fast friends and talked about God and His path for Kvanh’s life.

Kvanh, now living in the reality of God’s love and forgiveness, has become an active member in Pastor Milit’s church. The church members have become a family for Kvanh. What a blessing for a man who lived in the dark cave of loneliness for most of his life, who now has a Father in heaven, a brother in Jesus and brothers and sisters in the church walking with him day by day.

Medical Care Brought Near by a Bridge of Hope Center

Yohannan – Discussing Jamar and Evelyn, their family’s struggle with poverty, the common suffering of illnesses brought about by malnutrition, and the medical care brought near by Gospel for Asia (GFA) Bridge of Hope.

amar and Evelyn were fortunate to be working. Income as a driver and schoolteacher kept their family of four floating above the extreme poverty line that so many of their neighbors were submerged under.

Discussing struggles with poverty, illnesses brought about by malnutrition, and the medical care brought near by Gospel for Asia supported Bridge of Hope. — Despite their steady jobs, Jamar and his wife struggled to afford healthy foods and medical care for themselves or their young daughters.

The rural area where Jamar and his family lived was lush with tea plantations and family farms. The markets were filled with eggs, chicken and meat products. But all these healthy foods were out of reach for most of the working population who earned less than $5 a day. Spending more than half of that amount on a dozen eggs was a luxury families could not afford.

Jamar and Evelyn stuck to rice, lentils and vegetables twice a day, like most in their community. On rare occasions, Jamar would spend two days of hard-earned income on a meager feast of chicken for his family.

This lack of nutritious food meant most of the villagers suffered from vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition—and subsequent illnesses like skin problems, respiratory issues and eye problems. Furthermore, living so rurally meant they did not have access to medical care, nor could they afford it if they did.

Bridge of Hope Hosts Medical Camp

The Bridge of Hope center that Jamar’s daughter, Abby, attended organized a free medical camp for the local community. Medical professionals from a district hospital came and provided free medications and vitamins to the malnourished population.

Jamar and Evelyn found support for their family through the local Bridge of Hope center. Their eldest daughter, Abby, was enrolled at the center as a first grader. At Bridge of Hope, Abby received a nutritious meal each day to supplement what she ate at home, and she got help with her schoolwork while her parents worked each day to support her and her baby sister.

One day at Abby’s Bridge of Hope center anticipation hung in the air when the staff announced the center was going to organize a free medical camp. That night Abby told her parents the exciting news.

Grateful for the opportunity to get free medical services, Jamar coordinated with the parents of other Bridge of Hope students to volunteer at the medical camp. They passed out flyers to the surrounding communities, cleaned the school where the camp would be held and rearranged furniture to accommodate the coming doctors and nurses. Jamar even met with the village government authority, village head, and superintendent of the local tea plantation to get their support.

Blessings Given, Received

Jamar organized parent volunteers to unload medical supplies and set up the camp.

The morning of the medical camp, Jamar and other parent volunteers unloaded medical supplies from the vehicle of the health care team that came from the nearest hospital, which was 15 miles away. The volunteers arranged a make-shift pharmacy in the main hallway of the school. They also set up a seating area for the sick to wait to be seen by a doctor.

After setting up and getting everything ready, Jamar got in line to see the doctor. For the two months prior, he had known something was wrong. He had phlegm build-up and was feeling weaker than normal. The doctor did a thorough checkup for Jamar, diagnosing his phlegm issue as the result of an infection. The doctor prescribed antibiotics to Jamar plus vitamins to help support his daily strength and health.

“To get medicines for any sickness we have to travel 4 kilometers,” Jamar says. “I also did not have money to buy medicines, which are very expensive. I waited for almost two months in order to get medicines, and [now I] received everything free because of the Bridge of Hope medical camp.”

One Day, 500 Blessings

The day was long and filled with patients waiting for medical treatment. More than 500 people came to the medical camp, and everyone who needed vitamins and medications received them freely. As the evening approached, Jamar helped disassemble the camp and put the classrooms back to normal. Over the next days and weeks, Jamar’s respiratory issues subsided, and he felt more alert and physically fit, able to work long hours without the fatigue that plagued him before. Jamar, his family and the entire community flourished after the medical camp.

“I got a lot of good information about my health and the children’s medical needs,” shares Jamar. “This camp was a great help for all our people to receive this kind of free medical care from qualified doctors. … We thank God for this opportunity and pray that God will bless [the church leaders] and all the Bridge of Hope staff for this great service done for our community people.”

“I Must Do the Work”: When Cancer Tries to Take Over a Gospel for Asia Missionary’s Life

Yohannan – Discussing a Gospel for Asia (GFA) Woman Missionary named Munay, her encounter with Christ, the trials, the cancer, the answered prayers, and the enduring love for Jesus and others.

ears freely tumbled down Munay’s cheeks and spilled onto her already soaked pillow. It was so hard. Cancer raged inside her body even though Munay had underwent surgery and eight chemo injections. Now radiotherapy attacked her cancerous cells. Too sick to move, Munay lay on her bed. Thoughts raced in her head, moving her past the physical pain—her heart was breaking. She couldn’t die now, not yet. There was so much work yet to be done, and if she didn’t do it, who would?

Young Christian Finally Understands Christ’s Sacrifice

Munay grew up going to church and knew the Bible well. Her pastor even appointed her to be a Sunday school teacher, but she felt something was missing.

“I never committed myself freely into God’s hand,” she said.

Because of this, she had no peace. She searched for it by going to different prayer meetings, but “I always came back empty handed,” she said. “Yet there was hope in my life that one day God would touch me and fill my heart with His divine peace.”

That revelation came while attending a Christian convention. She was inspired by the believers and their passionate worship. It seemed they loved Jesus deeply. After hearing a message from Isaiah 44:22, Munay understood for the first time that Jesus had willingly laid down His life for her. When she took this to heart and personally accepted God’s love, everything changed.

“Peace and joy filled my life in abundance,” she said.

Munay was now entrusted with a deep yearning to help those who didn’t know Jesus, her Savior. She cried out to the Lord to use her, and He answered. After she graduated Bible college in 2006, she began serving the Lord in her home state. Munay, there on her knees, would find true victory amidst years of controversy.

Munay journeyed through many struggles. After five years of ministry she found out she had cancer.

A Gospel for Asia Woman Missionary Finds Victory Through Prayer

During her ministry Munay didn’t experience an easy road. Because she was not an eloquent speaker it was difficult for her to convey to people the message of hope she carried. The individuals she served were highly educated and thought little of Munay, especially as she stumbled through her words. The youths also threw stones at her house as an attempt to scare her off. But no matter how much the locals looked down on her and treated her as lowly, she would not become discouraged. Munay was convinced she was called by God, and she was prepared to face all kinds of adverse circumstances on her knees.

It was an uphill climb, but the more difficult the situations Munay faced, the more she was willing to bow her head. As a result, the Lord in His mercy answered her prayers and blessed her ministry. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, she established a prayer fellowship with eventually 10 believers. The local people mocked them in their new journey with Jesus. They tried to discourage them with sarcastic remarks, but Munay encouraged the believers and fixed her eyes heavenward with them. Munay well understood what they were facing.

Cancer Threatens a Gospel for Asia Woman Missionary Service

After five years of serving in this community, Munay’s life weathered yet another difficult season. In 2014, Munay found out she had cancer. This devastated Munay, but not for herself. She cried out to the Lord day and night, asking God to spare her life.

“Lord, please heal me, as I have much work remaining to do,” Munay prayed through her sobs. “I must do the work.”

After Munay journeyed through cancer and was healed, she became strong physically and testified before other missionaries of God’s grace in her life, encouraging them to keep serving the Lord with all their might.

However, even in sickness Munay was not deterred from loving and trusting Jesus. She believed God would heal her body. Her ministry didn’t stop either. Munay encouraged her brothers and sisters in God’s Word while on her sickbed, praying and longing to be with them daily.

After a time, the Lord answered Munay’s faith-filled prayers and brought her healing. Munay came through her terminal illness as one tried through fire, and her testimony in Christ appears golden.

There are many women, like Munay (not pictured), who are willing to display the love of Jesus to this generation. Will you strengthen them through prayer and support?

“When you are in good health, do as much as you can for the Lord. Do not take your life for granted,” Munay exhorted her brothers and sisters, managing to stand before them as her body grew stronger. “Let us not grow weary, but let us be zealous in serving the Lord. And may the Lord not [have to] put you in a position to make you realize how little you have done. We must do the work. If we do not do it, then who will? Make the most of the life that God has given us.”

Faithful Vessels for God’s Glory

God has called many vessels who are willing to give their whole lives so others may meet the Savior. Munay’s life is one testimony among many committed women who pour out their very lives for the love of Christ Jesus. Trading Plastic Bottles for a Brighter Future

Yohannan – Discussing an ostracized girl named Asha and her poverty stricken family, the stigma brought about by trading trash and plastic bottles, and the acceptance and education received through a Gospel for Asia (GFA) Bridge of Hope Center.

sha picked up a discarded plastic bottle, dropping it mechanically into the sack she had swung across her back. It grew heavier as the morning wore on. Her empty stomach growled as she trudged through garbage-laden streets and alleyways. As on many other days, Asha had left her house without breakfast.

Though Asha (pictured) wanted to learn, she was afraid to go to school. Ostracized and Trying to Survive

It was Asha’s daily ritual, ever since she was a very young child, to rise early in the morning to go picking through trash with her mother. Asha’s father was paralyzed, so he couldn’t provide for his family. It was up to Asha and her mother to maintain the family. But being ostracized within their society, they didn’t have many options when it came to jobs. They were left to rummage through trash heaps and filth every day to find plastic items they could sell. Asha shouldered the responsibility of gathering, sorting, grading and selling whatever she could find.

Facing Rejection at School

When it came time for school, Asha didn’t want to go. She feared the rejection of her teachers and classmates. No one would sit by her or play with her. She was alone and excluded. Asha didn’t have any friends at school.

Her parents explained to her disappointed heart the reason why society did not value her. She knew it was because she picked trash for a living, but this never made it any easier. It couldn’t be helped. Education was only a faint dream for her and the many others like her. The door for a better future was within her grasp, yet the realities of society kept it barred. Asha faced what thousands of children like her face—no way out of the cycle of poverty and no way for an education.

Father Wants Daughter to Study

After a years’ time, Asha was a changed girl. Through the love and care of her tutors at Bridge of Hope, she learned how to keep herself neat and clean and how to strengthen her studies. When Asha’s father heard about our Bridge of Hope center, he encouraged Asha to start going. He knew Bridge of Hope offered help to those in need, especially to those who society deemed the lowest of people. The staff at the Bridge of Hope center would care for his daughter and provide the things he knew he couldn’t. Asha arrived at the center holding a plastic bag full of school books in her hands. Tattered, smelly clothes hung from her small body, and her face was dirty and unwashed.

Though she arrived unkempt, the staff always welcomed, loved and cared for her. It seemed they weren’t concerned about her background. Instead, they tenderly took deliberate steps to help her keep neat and clean. First, she was given a backpack to replace her makeshift bookbag, then she was given school supplies and other useful gifts.

Young Girl Thrives on Love

After a year, Asha’s life was changed completely. She learned fast and grew strong in her studies. Now, instead of having an empty stomach, every school day she enjoys a meal at the center. Asha has learned how to keep herself clean, and she participates in all the activities Bridge of Hope conducts.

“My daughter is getting [her] daily needs [met] through the Bridge of Hope center,” Asha’s father said. “Now she is having good food, and she is healthy now. We are very happy to see her growth. She feared to go to school, but now she is never absent from school.”

Asha’s parents have watched their now 12-year-old daughter thrive under the love and attention she received at the Bridge of Hope center. Asha no longer picks up trash; instead, every school day, she picks up her pencil and notebook and learns—just like she always wanted. There is hope and ambition in her life, where there wasn’t any room before among the garbage heaps.

You Can Offer Them Hope

There are millions of children just like Asha who are hopeless, forgotten and utterly rejected. Bridge of Hope is helping precious children through education, daily meals, character-building activities, lessons on good hygiene, and by setting positive examples of love and good morals. A Legacy that Will Touch Generations: An Irishwoman’s Faith Provides Clean Water to Thousands

Not too long ago, there was a village characterized by a desperate struggle for survival. People lived in poverty and at risk of disease. But there was an even more pressing problem: In the hot, dry desert, there were not enough water sources to go around. The villagers depended on dirty ponds and rivers. Sometimes, it was difficult to find water at all.

Pastor Dalapathi ministered in this village and was deeply concerned about the people’s situation. While he worked hard to share Christ’s love with the people, it was difficult to break through, and he could see they desperately needed clean water.

Providing Clean Water, Hope Through a Well

By God’s grace, Gospel for Asia Pastor Dalapathi and the believers did not lose hope. Instead, they prayed and something changed: God provided a Jesus Well for their village. It was an amazing answer to prayer. Suddenly, the villagers had clean, safe water ready and accessible. But this gift had a far greater impact.

“The non-believers of the village were astonished by the good work that has been done by the church,” said one field report.

And this tangible act of love warmed hearts to learning more.

Because of a Jesus Well, things are very different now. And 109 other villages have been changed in similar ways.

But the story didn’t start here.

A “Wee Woman” with a Big Impact

This story started far away in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It’s the story of a woman who loved Jesus more than the things of this world and left a legacy that is changing the lives of thousands . . . perhaps forever.

Very kind. Funny. A little eccentric. These are all words used to describe Mae Coulter. A woman with a passionate witness for Jesus, who loved Him “beyond reason.” A remarkable “wee woman” (as they say in Northern Ireland), only around 5 feet and 1 inch in stature. But her life touched literally thousands of people whom she never even met.

When a House Was Born Again

Born in Northern Ireland, Mae’s life was checkered with tragedy. She moved to England with her husband, Les, and had been married only a short while when he died suddenly and unexpectedly. He went outside to get Mae’s birthday present, and she never got to speak to him again.

After that tragedy, Mae found Christ. Soon afterwards, she returned to Northern Ireland, where she bought a house.

Then disaster struck again. A house fire destroyed all of Mae’s possessions. Family photographs. Household treasures. Everything was gone in a matter of minutes.

That event changed Mae’s perspective completely. As a close friend, Marilyn, explained, “She decided that never again would she store up anything. It could just be gone. Anything she had would go into something that was lasting, that was kingdom building.”

Mae’s house had to be reconstructed inside. That was when Mae erected a plaque outside it that simply said, “Born Again.”

“She used to say that she had been born again, and so had her house,” Marilyn reflects. “It gave her opportunities to share the Gospel with people who visited her.”

Choosing to Live Differently

From then on, Mae’s focus was on eternity. She saw no need for accumulating things in this world.

“Always invest in something that’s going to be long lasting,” Marilyn recalls Mae saying.

Mae threw herself into serving others. She sent shoeboxes of presents to disadvantaged children and went daily to make meals for a friend who couldn’t make them herself. Every Christmas, she bought gifts for desperate people in Asia, in honor of her friends. Mae believed deeply in providing clean water. “If people had clean water,” she would say, “then sickness would be eliminated.” And she thought of a way to provide thousands with just that.

A Legacy that Will Last

As Mae got older, she made preparations for her departure from this world and into the presence of Christ. To Marilyn, Mae explained clearly what she wanted: a simple black stone upon the coffin that said, “Mae Coulter, with the Lord.” Nothing else was needed. That said it all.

But that wasn’t all Mae had planned. When Mae went to be with the Lord, she left a legacy to be divided between two charities she had loved and faithfully supported. It included enough to dig 110 Jesus Wells.

Mae gave the money in faith, with no idea what it could accomplish.

“She was just doing what she could,” Marilyn says. “She would be astounded if she knew the number of people who have benefited from that. Her generosity will benefit many who never knew her or her them.”

And they really are benefiting. Now, in 110 villages, downtrodden villagers who once trekked to filthy water sources have access to clean, safe water . . . and a signpost to the Water of Life. It’s changing their lives forever.

Dreams of Motherhood Resurrected as Gospel for Asia Sisters of Compassion Pray

Matali’s hand unconsciously lingered over her flat belly, and tears that were eager to be her morning companion sprang up. Two white saris flitted by outside, catching Matali’s eye. She pushed back her dark thoughts and opened her door to follow the women she watched every day.

Miscarriage’s Many Visits to Matali

Matali had arrived in this village two years previously as a new bride. She was determined to make a comfortable home for her husband, Ayush, who worked hard every day at a factory manufacturing medication.

What should have been two blissful years of newlywed joy for Matali and Ayush was marked instead by sorrow and grief. Matali became pregnant very quickly, but before she completed the first trimester, Matali lost her baby. Two more pregnancies and two more miscarriages dismayed the young bride who longed to be a mother. Matali wanted to bring joy into her husband’s life, but it seemed all they had was grief.

Ayush worried for his wife and sought medical treatment for her, trusting doctors to diagnose and treat the cause of Matali’s miscarriages. Both Ayush’s and Matali’s parents offered sacrifices and prayed to their gods for the blessing of a child, but neither medical help nor religious activities enabled Matali to carry a baby to full term.

During this time, two women bought milk every day from Matali’s neighbor. At first Matali didn’t think anything about the women passing her home, but their simple white dresses stood out, contrasting with the typical fashion of bold, colorful prints. Matali became intrigued by the two women who appeared young, serene and set apart somehow.

One day, Matali went out and talked with the women and learned they were Gospel for Asia (GFA) Sisters of Compassion who served Jesus.

The sisters began to visit with Matali when they came to buy milk, and the women became friends. Soon they learned about Matali’s heartache and encouraged her to trust in Jesus, the living God who rose from the dead. Surely, He could cause life to spring up in Matali’s womb.

Gospel for Asia Sisters of Compassion help Hope to Blossom in Matali’s Heart

Accepting the sisters’ invitation, Matali and Ayush visited the nearby church led by one of our pastors Sachitan. The couple shared with the pastor their intent in visiting his church: They wanted a baby and hoped Jesus would do something. Pastor Sachitan and the other believers gathered around Matali and Ayush and prayed for them, asking God to bless the young couple with a baby.

The next month, Matali knew she was pregnant again.

Fear and joy wrestled in her heart. As the first trimester progressed, Matali noticed a difference between this pregnancy and her others. Hope would rise in Matali’s heart, but then memories of what had happened in the past would send that hope scattering into the wind.

By the beginning of the second trimester, Matali and Ayush’s faith in Jesus grew with the baby in her belly. She did not have any of the complications of the previous pregnancies, and the couple knew Jesus had answered their prayers.

Ayush’s mother came to stay with Matali to take care of her, and she started going to the church with her son and daughter-in-law. Matali’s pregnancy continued normally, causing all three to praise Jesus for His miraculous gift of life.

New Life for the Entire Family

Matali’s life was so different than it used to be. She no longer worried about her baby—she knew Jesus was watching over the life developing within her. The Sisters of Compassion came to Matali’s home every Wednesday for prayer and fellowship. The sisters presented Matali and Ayush with a gift to celebrate their growing family: a Bible. Ayush read it every morning before going to work and each night before bed.

Now, Matali, Ayush and his mother faithfully worship Jesus every Sunday, and all three plan to testify to their new faith.

Matali praises God for her struggles, which led her family to know Jesus. When her baby is born, the child will grow up knowing Jesus his or her whole life. Matali’s pain and sorrow have given way to contentment and anticipation of good things in the future.

Children Become More Than Scavengers at a Bridge of Hope Center

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan – Discussing Adya and her siblings who, like many students, were rescued from difficult situations when they are enrolled in Gospel for Asia (GFA) Bridge of Hope.

Adya lost her father when she was a small child. Her mother, a Christian in name only, remarried and had two more children, only to be abandoned by her new husband shortly thereafter. Though Adya’s mother labored from early morning to late night every day, she never earned quite enough to provide for the family. Adya and her siblings often went hungry.

Adya’s mother managed to send her to school from time to time, but Adya’s younger sister, Lalana, and brother, Gayan, spent most of their lives roaming the slums, collecting trash to recycle. That is, until they began attending a Bridge of Hope center near their home.

Guiding Their Now-Clean Hands

Tarli, a social worker at Adya’s Bridge of Hope center, remembers when young Adya first joined seven years before. The girl, then 8 years old, was scrawny and unclean. She and her siblings didn’t know how to bathe or comb their hair; they didn’t have enough clothing to cover their bodies; they hardly knew how to carry on a conversation.

The tutors and social workers patiently worked with Adya, Lalana and Gayan. The children didn’t know how to read or write, so the Bridge of Hope tutors helped each one individually, guiding their hands to help the children form the letters. The center provided a daily meal, hygiene lessons, clothing and abundant doses of love. Under this care, it didn’t take long for the children to blossom.

“The life of Adya entirely transformed after she joined the Bridge of Hope center,” Tarli reflects. “She looks beautiful now and has become an energetic student in our center.”

No Longer Searching

Rather than scavenging for trash, Lalana and Gayan enjoy studying, and 15-year-old Adya has become one of the best students in her school. Her teachers and tutors are proud of her accomplishments, and her mother, after witnessing the transformation in her children’s lives, has come to understand that the Christ she once knew in name only is a Living Savior who still changes lives today.

Learning Obedience Instead of Swear Words

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan – Discussing Saloni and her encounter with the Gospel for Asia (GFA) VBS program, God’s instrument to soften hard hearts transforming children’s lives.

Foul words flew from Saloni’s mouth shaped like arrows pointed at her father, Laksh. Hot with anger at his young teen’s continual insolence, Laksh put his foot down and disciplined Saloni. But receiving the consequences of her actions only drove Saloni into sullenness. The 13-year-old withdrew, refusing to eat for an entire day.

Laksh tried to talk with his daughter the next day to convince her of the error of her ways. But respect in Saloni’s child-parent relationships had vanished long before. She cared little about what her parents told her to do. Saloni had joined a troublesome crowd and skipped school to wander the village with them. Soon, she skillfully quarreled with anyone who crossed her, pulling from a collection of foul words she learned from her new friends. Even when her misconduct led to discipline, Saloni ignored Laksh’s every word of correction.

Noah Impacts Rebellious Teen

Then she heard the story of Noah, which changed her life.

In the midst of her rebellion, Saloni developed a friendship with a classmate, Nandini. One day while they chatted together, Nandini shared an interesting story she had just learned at a local Vacation Bible School program. It piqued Saloni’s curiosity, and the young girl quickly expressed interest in attending VBS too.

The next day, both girls entered the church where our pastor Pahal was hosting the Gospel for Asia (GFA) VBS program. Powerful truths filled Saloni’s ears as she carefully listened to her VBS teacher.

“Noah was a good person, and he feared God,” the teacher explained. “He obeyed God and built the ark according to His instructions. Because of that, his family was saved from the flood water.”

Until that moment, obedience had been low on Saloni’s priority list. After all, didn’t she have more fun playing with her friends and making her own decisions than she would have if she did what her parents told her to do? But the story of Noah’s obedience to God—and the subsequent deliverance he and his family experienced—made Saloni rethink her rebellious choices.

Contemplation Leads to Heart Change

Saloni began considering the implications of her actions, and she realized God values obedience and blesses those who obey.

Touched by this new understanding, Saloni resolved to obey her parents and fulfill her responsibilities well. The determination that used to empower her selfishness and rebellion now helped give Saloni the strength she needed to change her life’s course. Breaking off from her old habits, she bid farewell to her harmful friendships and resumed attending school regularly.

By the end of the week-long event, Saloni seemed like a different girl. Her parents observed her new choices with amazement.

“Our daughter’s life has changed after attending your [VBS] program,” they testified to Pastor Pahal.

Not long after first attending VBS, Saloni expressed faith in Christ. Sunday school at Pastor Pahal’s church became a regular part of her life, as did choosing to honor God. The old Saloni was gone, and the new Saloni walked daily in the power of God.

Hearts Changed Before the Credits Rolled

Yohannan – Discussing the difficulties to reach villages with the Gospel, whether because of location, tradition, illiteracy, and the transformative impact Gospel for Asia (GFA) film team ministry bring to the mission field.

Paritosh excitedly sat down with his wife and other members of his community. They were about to enjoy a special treat that evening: a movie.

As the film progressed, however, Paritosh’s mood changed from that of seeking entertainment to one of deep contemplation. This movie was not what he expected, but he was far from disappointed.

Unwanted Hope

Paritosh had heard of Jesus before. Our pastor in his area, Biswas, had first come to Paritosh’s village more than 12 years earlier and brought news of Jesus to Paritosh’s community. Even so, Paritosh had no interest in Jesus and didn’t understand the significance of His life.

Paritosh’s reaction to Pastor Biswas’s ministry was typical in his region. The majority of people in his mountainous area either ignored what workers like Pastor Biswas shared or responded with firm—sometimes forceful—rebukes. Pieces of literature about Christ frequently ended up as torn fragments on the ground, and bruises marked the bodies of many who tried to help villagers learn about Jesus. Traditions ran deep, and these communities wanted nothing that their ancestors didn’t have, especially regarding whom they worshiped. Some villages were so determined to keep themselves at status quo that any outsiders were required to obtain permission to even enter their area.

“The ministry here … is not easy,” Pastor Biswas says. “An ordinary person without a deep commitment to serve the Lord cannot come here and stay and do ministry.”

In addition to villagers’ resistance to Christ, he names other challenges to ministry: extreme winter cold, lack of electricity, high living costs, very few roads, forests filled with bears and tigers, low literacy rates and homes scattered across far distances.

In the midst of these obstacles, Pastor Biswas and other Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers cry out to God to enable them to serve and love the communities and people who, at the moment, do not especially want them around.

Understanding Grows Through Films

Since 1988, dedicated national workers have traveled as film teams to remote regions to share special movies with communities. These culturally relevant films help people in all walks of life grasp the greatness of God’s gift through Christ.

As an answer to those prayers, God sent small groups of men and women to this region—our film team that were ready to help communities understand, through movies, the truth of who Jesus is.

When one such team came to Pastor Biswas’s area, they worked together to organize a special movie night for Paritosh’s village.

“In most of the remote villages, there are no other means of entertainment like television and other things,” Pastor Biswas explains. “When there is a film show, people are interested, and they come.”

After obtaining permission from local authorities, Pastor Biswas and the film team members announced the details of the event to the community. They set up their projector screen and prepared for the sunset event.

Paritosh and the others watching the film saw Jesus in a new way that night. After years of disinterest in Christ, Paritosh finally understood what Jesus did for him.

“It really touched my heart,” Paritosh says. “Through this film show, I could understand that Jesus Christ came to this world to save me; He came and gave His life. … Our body will die one day, but our soul will be saved if I believe in Jesus Christ. Through His death I am saved. And it was for my sins that He died and rose again.”

People of all ages in villages like Paritosh’s have discovered those same things about Christ after watching a film about His life, ministry, death and resurrection. For some, the evening event is their first time to ever hear of Jesus. Others who grew up as cultural Christians realize through the film that they never started their own personal relationship with Christ. Still others journey from a place of spiritual criticism to faith during those few hours—or they start the journey.

Giving Their All for Communities, for Christ

Film ministry has proven one of the most effective ways of conveying God’s love to communities, especially those with high illiteracy rates. But serving in film ministry is not easy, as Malini knows firsthand.

Malini served on a team with three other women in Pastor Biswas’ region. At the start of her ministry, Malini knew she wanted to serve on a film team. Since then, she helped many people understand the truth about Christ. Her passion for using film to convey hope and God’s promise of new life undergirded her during times of intense difficulty.

“I know Christ selected me for this ministry, and Christ will help me,” Malini declares confidently.

As an all-women team, Malini’s group had special opportunities to minister to the women in the villages they visited. The culturally imposed behavioral boundaries in their area meant they did not receive the same level of opposition a team of men would experience—male missionaries commonly receive beatings, for example—and communities were often more willing to welcome unknown women than male strangers.

But the young women also had their own set of unique challenges. Some villagers misunderstood the traveling women’s intentions and passed shameful remarks. The mountainous region they ministered in had very little access to transportation, so they had to carry their equipment long miles up and down steep slopes. Local believers often assisted the women, but even so, the journeys between villages were grueling for all the film teams, especially for the women teams.

“Sometimes we are so tired physically,” Malini confides. “When we are discouraged … we pray our God will inspire us and give us more strength to do the ministry.”

But amid the challenges, Malini and all the other film team members, male or female, know their labor is not in vain. They meet people like Paritosh, whose lives are forever changed because others gave of themselves to bring hope to remote places.

“It is through the film ministry team that came to my village [that] I was able to watch the film and understand the love of God in my life,” Paritosh testifies.

He and his wife now both participate in their local fellowship and are growing in their walks with Christ.

Change Lives Through Film Ministry

Malini desired to spend her days helping others learn of God’s redemptive love, and through Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported film ministry, she and many others are doing just that. In addition, these teams empower communities to grow stronger by hosting double-feature shows. They play one film telling Christ’s story and a second film promoting awareness of societal issues, such as hygiene, smoking, alcohol and drugs. Scattered across diverse areas of Asia, film teams visit hundreds—even thousands—of communities each year, but more teams are needed to help all the people of Asia understand God’s gift of mercy.
