WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Biju whose peaceful life was interrupted after being diagnosed with leprosy, and the Gospel for Asia-supported pastor who shared the healing and love of God.

Biju loved his peaceful life in the rural farmland of his family. He grew up devoted to the traditional gods of former generations and passed on this heritage to his three children. His family was not rich, but they were happy.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Biju whose life was interrupted after being diagnosed with leprosy, and the Gospel for Asia-supported pastor who share God's love & healing.
Biju’s happy life fell apart after he was diagnosed with leprosy. After searching for healing in every place he knew to look, Biju (pictured) finally found it in Jesus.

Biju’s peaceful life was marred when he started to notice an odd feeling in his fingers. He ignored the strange sensations and continued to work hard on his farm. As time went by, the sensations became more frequent. Eventually—when his fingers became permanently numb—Biju knew he could no longer ignore the problem. At the hospital, Biju was diagnosed with leprosy.

After Biju was diagnosed, the worry he shook off before became a permanent resident. Fear crept in when the medications the doctors prescribed did not help Biju. He became more and more desperate, seeking the help of witch doctors and shrines in the hope of a cure. As a last resort, Biju traveled abroad for an expensive treatment, but the efforts were useless. After spending a small fortune, Biju returned home and lost all hope of recovery. He spent his days contemplating the hardship of spending the rest of his life in a leprosy colony.

One day, a visitor came to Biju’s home to tell him about another possible cure. Biju listened to the visitor share about a pastor in a nearby village who had prayed for people with ailments and many of them got healed. The visitor urged Biju to go see the pastor, declaring Biju would surely be healed through prayer. This went against every conviction Biju held dear and trained his children in, but as he thought over the many places he had visited for healing, he realized he could not reject this final hope for a normal life. Weary and willing to try anything, he decided he would visit the pastor just once for prayer.

A Cure for More Than a Disease

The next Sunday, Biju and his family attended the worship service led by Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor Rubin. After the service, Pastor Rubin greeted the new family, and Biju told the pastor exactly why they were there, sharing the whole history of his disease and search for healing. Pastor Rubin talked to Biju about how much God loves him and how, when Jesus was on earth, He touched and healed people with leprosy. The pastor encouraged Biju to believe Jesus could heal him and to trust in the power of Jesus’ blood.

Biju, hearing the Word of God for the first time, had faith that Jesus would heal him. Pastor Rubin prayed for Biju earnestly and gave him a bottle of oil to apply to the affected areas of his body as an act of faith. Biju returned home and faithfully applied the oil to his broken body. He kept going to prayer meetings and also welcomed Pastor Rubin into his home for prayer.

Biju’s faith in Jesus grew while he diligently sought God in the Bible and in prayer. Gradually, Biju saw changes in his body. His leprosy symptoms slowly disappeared until he was completely cured of the disease.

Although Biju had asked God for healing, his miraculous healing still amazed him. After experiencing this wonderful act of God, Biju and his whole family trusted in Jesus.

Biju’s life is full of peace once again. But this time the peace runs deeper, and he knows it will continue for eternity.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Romila and her husband Taraswin, the crippling poverty, and the instrument God used to show them His love through Gospel for Asia Christmas gifts distribution program of a sewing machine.

It had been Romila’s hope to help her husband. She had great expectation of increasing their daily income, thinking she had found the tool to lift them out of poverty. She wrestled with her very meager education, which prohibited her from finding good work, and now Romila had a chance do something.

She started tailoring class, but once Romila graduated, her plans appeared to be merely an intangible dream. The six months of tailoring classes now looked like hours spent in vain. For all her effort, she and her hard-working husband couldn’t afford a sewing machine.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Romila, the poverty, & the instrument God used to show His love: Gospel for Asia Christmas gifts distribution program of a sewing machine
Romila had spent six months learning how to sew clothes. But she faced a huge obstacle after her training: Her husband couldn’t afford to buy her a sewing machine.

A Downward Spiral

A plumber by trade, Romila’s husband, Taraswin, worked faithfully to provide for his wife and little baby girl. However, no matter how hard he tried, he struggled to find work. Day by day they were sinking financially. A friend directed Taraswin to a job opportunity in another village. Believing this would help change things, they moved to start afresh.

But work was inconsistent, and this new job soon proved to be of no help to their financial state. They prayed earnestly to their traditional gods and goddesses and faithfully practiced rituals, but their situation only worsened.

As monthly rent drained their income, things did not look bright. However, unknown to Romila and Taraswin, God saw their struggles.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Blessed with a sewing machine
Like this woman, Romila has been blessed with the hope of a better income through a sewing machine, a gift found in Gospel for Asia’s Christmas Gift Catalog.

A Need Not Unseen

One day, they were chatting with their neighbor, and he introduced Taraswin and Romila to his friend, a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor named Rochan. As Pastor Rochan struck up a conversation with the couple, they began to open up.

“After coming to this place, I am not getting any proper work, and I am struggling to take care of my wife and child,” Taraswin explained.

Pastor Rochan encouraged Taraswin and Romila in the Lord. He prayed and asked God to open doors for them to have a better income. As Pastor Rochan walked away, he felt compelled to do everything he could to help this family.

Three weeks later, he invited Taraswin and Romila to the church’s Christmas gift distribution program. Romila could hardly believe her eyes when she received her sewing machine.

“I was really longing for a machine,” Romila recalls. “I have no words to express my feelings and thanks to the church.”
Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: A sewing machine relieves a family's struggle
Romila, Taraswin and their little daughter (pictured) now have true hope and joy. They are no longer struggling to get by, day by day.

A Dream Fulfilled Through Gospel for Asia Christmas Gifts

Now Romila can help provide for her family by sewing clothes from her home. The hopelessness which hung over Romila and Taraswin lifted, as they now can easily pay for their rent with plenty left over for additional expenses. Through this timely help, Romila and Taraswin saw the love of Jesus in their lives.

“This gift not only helps me to earn a daily income, but also it brought us close to the Living God,” says Romila.

Now Romila’s dream is being fulfilled, and her family is being lifted out of poverty. God hand-tailored every detail of their lives and wove a beautiful blessing of a sewing machine and the lasting knowledge of His undeniable love into Ramila’s and Taraswin lives.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Tilaka, a widow whose life was swallowed up into obscurity and isolation, and the Gospel for Asia workers that demonstrated and shared the unfailing love of Jesus.

Shocked by the news of her 7-year-old son’s murder, Tilaka’s mind whirled into a grief-laden state of confusion. If only her son had stayed with her that day; if only someone had stepped in to rescue him.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing a widow whose life was swallowed up into isolation, and the Gospel for Asia workers that shared the unfailing love of Jesus.
Overcome by the emotional trauma of losing her son, Tilaka (not pictured) developed a mental illness that isolated her from her community. Many women in Asia face similar rejection from society, if their husband dies.

Little Arun had been kidnapped by treasure hunters and given as a sacrifice to their gods in the hope of unearthing riches. Unbearable pain pierced Tilaka’s mothering heart when she discovered what had happened to her precious son. Grief stole her ability to think clearly, and she became labeled as a mentally challenged woman by those in her community.

Woman Swallowed Up into Obscurity

After losing her oldest son, Tilaka wandered the streets, slept on the pavement and began murmuring to herself while she gathered up dirty items alongside roadways. Recognizing that Tilaka was far from able to care for her remaining two children, the villagers sent Tilaka’s 5-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter to a children’s home in the area. Tilaka would never again be part of her children’s lives.

As the years passed, Tilaka’s difficulties were compounded by her status as a widow. In a culture that often blames widows for the death of their husbands, Tilaka found little sympathy from others over her plight. She survived by begging, facing the dangers of street life all alone: crime, disease and predators watching for helpless women. But Tilaka fell victim to a different street danger. A bus struck her one day while she sat alongside the road. Badly injured, Tilaka was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for fractures in her leg and hand. She spent months lying in a hospital bed, yet she received no visitors from her family or her village. It seemed that only the kindhearted doctors cared about the mentally challenged widow.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Living on the streets
Millions of men and women live on the sides of roads similar to this Asian street. Tilaka (not pictured) was one of them. She would wander about and eventually suffered a severe injury after being hit by a bus.

Tilaka’s short, heavyset body mended partially, but her mind remained unstable. Physically unable to work, she resumed begging for her food, dragging her leg as she looked for a way to satisfy her hunger. Tilaka now lived in a hut instead of sleeping on the pavement, but her mental difficulties had become so well-known that no one was willing to speak or spend time with Tilaka, leaving her in a world of isolation.

Visitors for the Overlooked Woman

Then one day, Tilaka’s world changed. For the very first time, she found unexpected visitors standing in front of her little hut. Shocked to see a man and woman at her door, Tilaka invited them in, offering them spots on the dirty ground where she sat.

Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor Dhevan and his wife, Marita, had been riding their bicycles when they noticed a poorly constructed hut near the road. Impelled by love, they stopped to minister to whoever lived there. Inside they found Tilaka—a picture of loneliness and despair.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: National missionary and his wife bring hope
When Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Pastor Dhevan and his wife visited Tilaka, she heard for the first time that she was loved by God and was not alone. This woman rejoices at hearing a similar message.

The couple’s kindness comforted Tilaka’s heart, and she quickly opened up to them. Ignoring the smell of the dirty ground he sat upon, Pastor Dhevan gently comforted the troubled widow with truths about her loving Creator.

“Mother, Jesus loves you a lot,” Pastor Dhevan told her, addressing her with the endearing term of their culture. “You are not alone.”

Tears fell from Tilaka’s eyes as she listened to the pastor’s words. Something changed within her heart—she felt happiness and peace. Even her hunger faded away in the presence of the new joy in her heart. It was the happiest day of her life.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Fellowship found in new community at church
These women at a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported church found a place of community and friendships, just like Tilaka did. Tilaka’s new friends prayed with her and provided her with food, helping her to heal from her mental illness.

Loving Community Welcomes the Unloved

Before leaving Tilaka’s hut, Pastor Dhevan invited Tilaka to the church he was leading. Pastor Dhevan’s warm welcome excited Tilaka so much that she walked to church the very next Sunday, even though it was some distance from her hut. She joined in among the believers at the worship service as they praised Jesus for His love and mercy. Seeing Tilaka’s need, the church provided her with food. Thereafter, Tilaka started walking to the church every day, receiving food and growing in her knowledge and love of Jesus. Gradually, her leg grew stronger, as did her troubled mind.

Tilaka’s heart stirred with hope and love for her newfound Savior. As her mind cleared, her heart overflowed with thanksgiving to God all throughout the day.

“Once I was insane,” Tilaka shared. “Jesus touched me and made me normal. He takes care of my day.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Moving from grief to hope
Tilaka’s life was completely changed by the love demonstrated by Pastor Dhevan and the believers at his church. Instead of grief, Tilaka (pictured) has hope, and instead of shame and isolation, she has a community that cares for her needs.

Widow Knows She Is Not Alone

Tilaka discovered a God who promises to never leave her nor forsake her and a community of people who love her and provide for her in Jesus’ name. Beyond the meals she received, Tilaka experienced the care of her new community when a fall trapped her in a pit filled with filthy water for seven hours. Pastor Dhevan and Marita visited Tilaka in the hospital and helped provide medicine for her injuries. No longer alone or forgotten, Tilaka’s church family prays for her and ministers to her needs, regularly providing her with food and encouragement.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Ministry to widows
Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers minister to widows in Christ’s name through many practical ways, such as providing food, clothing and income-producing gifts.

One in 40 Million

WILLS POINT, TX – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed the nation of India under a 21-day Janata (all people) curfew to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic among the country’s 1.3 billion residents. He announced the nationwide lockdown on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed India under a 21-day Janata curfew Coronavirus pandemic lockdown to prevent the spread of the virus.Although the number of reported cases and deaths due to the Coronavirus remain relatively low in India, the population density is a matter of significant concern. The higher the population density, the easier it may be for the virus to spread. India is home to an average of more than 450 people per square kilometer. The major metropolitan areas of Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai each have more than 20,000 people per square kilometer.

Social distancing and isolating in place have already proven to be effective in staving the spread of the virus. A Janata curfew, ordering everyone to stay home, appears to be the best means the Prime Minister has at this time to protect his people.

Nonetheless, a complete cessation of activity could undermine a nation’s economy, even if it has been the fastest growing in the world.

So, what should churches do during a lockdown? Should they shut their doors, or should they continue to meet?

Dr. K.P. Yohannan, founder of Gospel for Asia (GFA World), has set an example for all church leaders by issuing a statement regarding is instructions to Gospel for Asia (GFA World)-supported churches impacted by the curfew.

“The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, called on the nation to show ‘resolve’ and ‘restraint’ as we together face the menace of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). In light of the speech, I would like to reiterate the fact that we stand together with the Prime Minister and the citizens of the country and are determined to do all we can to keep ourselves and our country safe. Heeding to the call of the ‘Janata curfew’ on Sunday the 22nd, I have instructed … that all our Sunday services … stand canceled all across the country. We must also avoid house visiting and prayer meetings unless it is an absolute emergency.”

What makes Yohannan’s message so significant is that is an example for all Christians, regardless of where we live. Yohannan’s commitment to Scripture is without question. Read Romans 13:1–2.

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Complying with a government shutdown, whether in India or in the United States, is not a matter of politics or personal preferences. It is a matter of obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ and His written Word. Failing to comply with a government order is not courageous. It is disobedience. Following the Prime Minister’s directive is the biblical thing to do. The right thing to do.

Pray for the examples of the all the believers in India and around the world to demonstrate obedience. Obedience is another hallmark of our faith. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep my commandments.” May we all be found doing so. The world is watching.

KP Yohannan has issued two statements about the Coronavirus situation found here and here.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing the harsh life of those living in tea estates, and the Gospel for Asia-supported pastor who show in big and small ways how much Jesus loves them.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing the harsh life of those living in tea estates, and the Gospel for Asia-supported pastor who show in many ways how much Jesus loves them.

“I was born and brought up in a tea estate. I am a son of a tea garden laborer, and I myself was a laborer once. Before even coming to the Lord, I have seen the struggles of the life of tea garden people.” —Pastor Ekanpreet

Rows and rows of lush green shrubs stretch into the horizon. Women dot the scenery, plucking tea leaves and stuffing what they’ve collected into bags they carry on their heads. Some women smile, enjoying the slivers of conversation they have with each other. Others keep their focus on their job, plucking and stuffing, so their families will have enough income to make it through the day.

For as much natural beauty that surrounds the tea estate, the lives of these laborers are far from beautiful.

Parents can’t afford to buy their children clothing.

“All I can do is just tell [my children], ‘This time I am not able to buy your clothes. Maybe next coming Christmas, I will buy some dress,’” says Mudit, father of six.

Wives are sent away to find work.

“I am barely able to buy food for my children. That was one of the reasons why I had to send my wife to [the city],” says Bhavin, father of three. “As a domestic help she has gone there so she can send us some money, and at least we can maintain the family.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Life on a tea estate

People have no restroom facilities.

“We used to go out in the open in the tea garden. That is the practice here,” says Iniyavan, a tea garden laborer. “There is lots of inconvenience when you have ladies at home, when you have children at home. For them, going to the toilet in the open, it’s not very good . . .”

Fathers suddenly vanish when the burden of caring for the family becomes too much.

“I have seen . . . the father, the head of the family, all of a sudden left the home and gone elsewhere,” says Pastor Ekanpreet, a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor serving in the area. “Once the man leaves the home, he never returns or nobody hears anything about that man.”

Young boys and girls grow up thinking drugs, alcohol and promiscuity are a normal way of life.

“People here tend to live a morally loose type of life,” Ekanpreet says. “They do not think much about ethical values or moral values in their lives.”

“I lived a very worldly life,” he says. “I used to drink. I used to smoke. I did every worldly thing that a person who doesn’t know the Lord does. … I even told my wife, ‘Look, now we have two children. The money that I make from labor work, from the tea garden, is not sufficient. You sell wine and drinks at home so we can make a better living.’”

But then Ekanpreet came to know Jesus. After nearly dying from a sickness, Ekanpreet devoted his life to serving the Lord, who healed him. He left the tea estate to pursue life in ministry, but the tea-estate life was never far from his mind.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: A missionary to a tea estate

“I wanted to continue to work among the tea estate,” he says. “I am deeply attached and associated emotionally with those living in tea gardens.”

After graduating from Bible college, Ekanpreet returned with a yearning to help the people he knew were living empty, hand-to-mouth existences—like he once was. But it took patience and enduring a tremendous amount of opposition to establish the work.

Fighting the Past

Pastor Ekanpreet and other missionaries were up against a colonial-era mentality among the tea estate laborers, who thought Christians were only out to make money and turn them into slaves.

“That was the misunderstanding the people had about the work we were doing,” Ekanpreet says. “But when we understood that, our first goal . . . was to bring change in the hearts and minds of the people who were thinking like that.”

Pastor Ekanpreet and other Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers searched for ways, even using their own resources and finances, to show the tea garden laborers God’s love by caring for their needs.

“If anybody was not able to send their children to school, we helped them. If anybody was not able to buy medicine for their sickness, . . . we started to help those people,” Ekanpreet says.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: A faithful national missionary

Through these practical expressions of Christ’s love, the people who once opposed Ekanpreet’s ministry began to soften their hearts.

“There is something strange, new in these Christians,” they said. “They are not here to make anybody slaves . . . but their purpose is to help the poor and the needy, which we are not able to do.”

“There is something strange, new in these Christians. . . their purpose is to help the poor and the needy, which we are not able to do.”

Blazing Forward

Pastor Ekanpreet knew the people living in the tea estate had many needs, many struggles. He saw their poverty, but he also understood their desire to thrive. He knew they needed lasting help, help that would sustain them.

So he set up Christmas gift distributions to give families income-generating gifts like barnyard animals, sewing machines, rickshaws and other items to alleviate their financial burdens.

People also received other gifts that would help their health and protect their dignity, gifts like toilets and mosquito nets. Seven Jesus Wells were also installed throughout the tea estate, allowing anyone access to clean, safe water.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Blessings on a tea estate

A Bridge of Hope center opened, giving kids, some of whom sold alcohol or were beggars, a chance for a better life. It also relieved some of the pressure parents felt to properly provide for their children, while at the same time imparting good morals to the students.

For 15 years, Pastor Ekanpreet and other Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers have served the more than 10,000 people living in the tea estate and surrounding areas, showing them in big and small ways how much Jesus loves them. Ekanpreet has seen the mindset of people change, and entire communities have been uplifted in society, but there is still much work to be done and more people who need to find the Hope worth living for.

“For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’” —Deuteronomy 15:11

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Anesh and his family, the critical but common problem of not having a decent toilet, and the practical Gospel for Asia (GFA) gift of a toilet, which will give many the priceless gift of restored dignity.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Anesh & family, the critical problem of not having a toilet, & the Gospel for Asia gift of a toilet, & the priceless gift of restored dignity

Anesh and his family rubbed the sleepiness from their eyes as they assembled to make their morning trek into a thick, green forest. Tall trees surrounded them with hopeful privacy, but still, there was no telling what they would encounter that morning. Wild animals and lurking men made the daily morning journey a dreaded one, especially for women. But they had to relieve themselves, and the outdoors was their only option.

Toiling Without a Toilet

Anesh gathered his family around him. The family, who had just that morning made the embarrassing trek, joined together to do something about it: pray. They petitioned the Lord for a much-needed but impossible item—a toilet.

Anesh worked hard to bring in daily resources for his family. He had the responsibility of providing for six family members, and though he toiled, he could never make enough to build a toilet.

Anesh and his family loved Jesus, and they served faithfully in the church, growing strong in the love of the Lord. Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported pastor Chamanlal shepherded them and also saw their needs. He encouraged Anesh and his family to pray in faith, believing God would answer their call for help.

Without access to their own toilet, the only option is to find a place outside.
Approximately 2.3 billion people around the world do not have a decent toilet. That’s one out of every three people.
Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Pastor Chamanlal and his family
This is Pastor Chamanlal and his family. With the love of the Lord in his heart, he is committed to serving God by helping meet the needs of people around him. He understood the plight of Anesh and his family and their desperate need for a proper toilet.

A Critical but Common Problem

The need for proper toilets around the world and in Asia alone is staggering. According to WaterAid, approximately 2.3 million people around the world do not have a decent toilet. That’s one out of every three people. A startling statistic—one that Anesh and his family were a part of.

“During rainy season,” Anesh’s wife, Panita, said, “it was difficult to go to an open area for nature’s call. Being a woman, it is humiliating to do business in a public area. Sometimes, when people pass through, I would stand and felt so sad.”

A Need Not Unseen

But God was not distant from this family’s prayers. He knew their need well and worked through Pastor Chamanlal—and believers around the world—to answer those prayers.

As Pastor Chamanlal brought this family’s need to his leaders, he got permission and resources to build a toilet for the family through a Christmas gift distribution program.

Soon, instead of trees, solid cement walls would surround people; instead of bare ground, a toilet was installed. After the finishing touches of blue paint were complete, the newly constructed facility was handed over to Anesh and his family, right in his backyard!

This was a joyous day. Not only were they encouraged to witness God answering their prayers but after many long years, they also finally had a sanitation facility on their own property. They were very thankful to God, as well as to the church, for providing them this facility. Now, Anesh and his loved ones do not have to get up early in the morning, and they don’t have to fear wild animals.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Anesh and his family were so happy and blessed to receive the answer to their prayers: a toilet on their own premises.
Anesh and his family were so happy and blessed to receive the answer to their prayers: a toilet on their own premises.

A Toilet Changes a Village

After the construction of Anesh’s toilet, the villagers asked Pastor Chamanlal to build one for them too. Anesh and his family excitedly told the villagers how the church has concern for the people. The community grew positive toward the social services of the church and appreciative of Pastor Chamanlal. Some villagers even started attending prayer meetings.

With much joy and thankfulness to God, Anesh said, “I am grateful to God and to the church for their concern toward us. I do daily work, and I could not build a sanitation [facility] for my family. But thank God for the help from the church.”

Anesh’s mother, Onella, was grateful too.

“The toilet is safe and secure for the females,” she said. “I have been using the open area for many years, and I wished a lot to have our own by seeing others. But due to the lack of money, we could not make it. But I thank God and the church for their concern and the help.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Outdoor toilet
Building a toilet for a community or a family can spare lives from disease, provide protection from the elements and wild animals, and give dignity to those who have never had it before.

It’s That Simple

A simple useful gift like a toilet can change the lifestyle of an entire family and even an entire village. Because someone gave, Anesh’s family was blessed with something they otherwise would probably never have been be able to obtain on their own.

This year, for World Toilet Day on November 19, you can make a difference in the lives of precious people in Asia with the practical gift of a toilet, which will give many the priceless gift of restored dignity.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Jishan, like many abandoned children turned to a life of begging in the streets, and the encounter that brought hope through Gospel for Asia-supported children’s home.

Three-year-old Jishan felt his grip on his father’s finger slip as the crowd jostled them in the marketplace. Suddenly, his father was gone. Strangers surrounded him.

Crying helplessly in the midst of the crowd, Jishan had no idea he would never see his father, mother or sister again.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Jishan, like many abandoned children turned to a life of begging, and the Gospel for Asia-supported children's home that brought hope.
Jishan is only one of many children who have been separated from their families at bustling marketplaces, such as this busy street. Parents can quickly disappear into a crowd, accidentally or intentionally, and never be seen again by their children.

In the years that followed, Jishan spent many days crying at street corners, hoping his family would find him. Instead, he found disappointment day after day.

Train Ride to a Life of Begging

When a kind man saw little Jishan crying in the market, he took Jishan home to care for him as his own son. Even at such a young age, Jishan’s religious beliefs were strong and contradicted those of his new family. The family treated him very well, but their different beliefs bothered Jishan deeply. Eventually, 9-year-old Jishan ran away and boarded a train bound for a major city.

Upon arriving, Jishan didn’t have a friend in the world. He had nothing to eat for the first two days in the city. To survive, he slept in the train station and partially appeased his gnawing hunger by begging.

“I used to miss my home,” Jishan remembers. “I used to think, What happened to my father? Where is he? I used to cry all alone at the station.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan and Gospel for Asia-supported children's home
Jishan grieved the loss of his parents, much like this young boy did. Jishan tried to survive street life on his own, but he was helpless against attacks from older boys.

At one point during the two or three weeks he spent on the streets, a group of boys beat Jishan in the middle of the night and stole the few coins he had earned through begging. Wary of everyone after the attack, Jishan isolated himself from others. But he did not go unnoticed—a loving eye spotted him among the multitudes packed into the city.

Gospel for Asia-supported Children’s Home: A House of Hope

One day, a lady approached Jishan. When she asked what his name was or if he was hungry, he barely answered her. The lady told Jishan about a place he could call home, and after listening to her for a little while, Jishan decided to trust her and accept her help.

The lady brought Jishan to a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported home for street boys. When Jishan arrived, he met the men, women and other rescued boys who would become his family. The staff gave Jishan a bath, tasty food and his very own cot in a room shared with other at-risk boys.

The environment was new for Jishan, but he embraced it. The rooms were kept neat and clean, and there was structure to the days’ events. Jishan had fallen behind in his schooling since running away, and he earnestly wanted to catch up, so the staff arranged for him to receive extra tutoring.

Boys and girls at Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported children’s homes receive education, food and genuine love from the staff, as well as help to heal from emotional and physical trauma from turbulent childhood experiences.

One Big Family

The men and women serving at the boys’ home truly love the children they minister to. As new children enter the home, the staff recognize each child’s individual needs.

“[The children] are already depressed, they are downtrodden,” explained Manik, the project coordinator for the Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported boys’ home.

“They are not happy, and people despise them in the world outside. If we are not kind to them, if we do not show love to them, they will lose hope…and I don’t want that to happen to these children.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: boys sheltered at the children’s home see each other as brothers and view the staff as aunts and uncles
Jishan (center) and the other boys sheltered at the children’s home see each other as brothers and view the staff as aunts and uncles, in place of the voids left by their own family members.

The atmosphere in the boys’ home is that of a big family, with many “uncles,” “aunts” and “brothers” to learn from, play with and cherish. Children who are sullen or dejected when they arrive at the boys’ home soon learn to laugh again through the love shown to them day after day. Jishan quickly recognized this genuine love.

“Everybody here is my family member,” Jishan shared. “I don’t feel that this is an orphanage; I feel this is my own house.”

Once, when Jishan experienced trouble with his legs and became weak and tired due to illness, the staff ladies cared for him and served him in many ways. They provided medicine for him and even massaged his weak legs.

“I will never forget the way they have cared and loved me,” Jishan said. “They have served me more than a mother would do to her children.”

Positive Role Models for Life

Jishan, now 16 years old, is a testimony of the love and encouragement the Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported staff pour out for the children at this children’s home. Their lives demonstrate gentle yet strong character, and Jishan values their direction and counsel.

“Had that sister not come to the railway station and not met me that day,” Jishan shared, “my life would have totally changed. I would have become very bad and rogue. If I had not met that sister, I would have been into criminal activities, drinking, consuming drugs, maybe stealing, even murdering. Who knows?

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Gentle guidance and counsel from the staff helped Jishan cultivate positive character qualities
Gentle guidance and counsel from the staff helped Jishan (pictured) cultivate positive character qualities that will benefit him and those around him for his entire life.

“One of the reasons I like the staff here at [the boys’ home],” Jishan continued, “is because even if I do [make a] mistake, they correct me . . . and I don’t feel bad when they scold me because I know that they are trying to correct me. They are trying to teach me what’s right and what’s not right. . . . I know they do it out of love and concern to make my future and my life [better]. I am very grateful and thankful to them.”

Jishan might be miles apart from his biological family, yet he has joy in his heart because of the love showered upon him in Jesus’ name.

Helping Abandoned Children Flourish

The smiles of these two boys tell of the hope and love they discovered through the boys’ street children’s home supported by Gospel for Asia (GFA). Through this boys’ home, hundreds of children have been cared for, and many have even been reunited with their families.

Through the kindness and care Jishan received at the Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported children’s home, his ambition changed from simply finding some food to fill his stomach to becoming a cricket player and completing his education. What’s more, God’s love has been demonstrated in ways Jishan will remember the rest of his life.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing GFA’s ministry as seen through several videos.

Forty-one years ago, the Lord began answering the prayers of a young man from India, his wife and a few Christian friends who shared a burden for the millions of people in Asia who had never heard of Jesus. Little did they realize the magnitude of the ministry the Lord would initiate and prosper through their sacrificial service—or how technology would enable the Body of Christ to glimpse God’s handiwork on other side of the globe.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: As you watch these videos, may you be encouraged by the Lord’s work in Asia. Thank you for praying for the people of Asia & for GFA's ministry among them.

GFA’s Ministry Sees Multitudes Transformed

After the publication of Dr. K.P. Yohannan’s impactful book Revolution in World Missions, the ministry thrived beyond imagination. Thousands of readers have felt God prompting them to partner with Gospel for Asia (GFA), and as a result, millions in Asia have heard about the life-changing peace and joy that only Jesus can give.

Yet very few of us will ever get to travel across the world to a rural village or crowded slum in Asia to personally see the difference God is making through Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers.

Thanks to the now commonly-used technology unavailable at the beginning of the 21st century, however, the entire world can see with their own eyes the needs of Asia’s people and how the Lord is working through Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported workers to minister as Jesus’ hands and feet.

Gospel for Asia invites readers to watch the videos and playlists on its YouTube channel. See and hear stories that will both break and bless your heart. Check out a few of these brief GFA YouTube videos to gain a glimpse of Asia and of the lives God is touching for His glory.

Forgotten Islands No Longer Forgotten” People on this group of islands in Asia survive through backbreaking work and have few opportunities for improvement. Forgotten by most of society, they’re highly susceptible to waterborne illness, tiger attacks and many other threats. But a team of Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported national workers is bringing hope to these islanders.

How a Jesus Well Transformed Lives in India” The need for clean water amid the global water crisis, especially in parts of Asia and India, cannot be overstated. GFA’s ministry, through the provision of clean water wells and water filters, is saving the lives of children, mothers and fathers across Asia. And we’re saving these families’ time so children can attend school more often, mothers can do more with their time and fathers are healthy more often to keep working.

From Trials to Triumph: Tapan’s Testimony” Pastor Tapan’s story brings Jesus’ words in John 16:33 to life. From the moment he committed to following Christ, to his time of looking death in the face through severe illness, Pastor Tapan testifies that God truly transforms trials and torment to victory and triumph.

Visit a Bridge of Hope Center with KP Yohannan” We invite you to join Gospel for Asia’s founder, Dr. K.P. Yohannan, in his behind-the-scenes tour of a GFA-supported Bridge of Hope center in Mumbai. See the difference these centers are making in the lives of many children in Asia.

Mula: A Widow’s Story” After Mula’s husband died, Mula and her four children were struggling to survive. The Lord showed His provision to them through GFA’s Bridge of Hope program and free tailoring classes. Eventually, His peace transformed their hearts.

The Stick Gatherer – No Longer A Slumdog” Watch this gripping story as Dr. K.P. Yohannan shares the story of a young boy who ended up in a GFA-supported Bridge of Hope center. Jesus said, “Whatever you do for the least of these, you do unto me.”

My Visit to a Leprosy Colony” Ashley shares about her visit to a leprosy colony where she got to see Gospel for Asia’s leprosy ministry in action. While she visited with the patients, Ashley watched Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported national missionaries serve the patients by cleaning their wounds. Residents of the colony were despised by society, but national missionaries showed God’s love to them by treating them with dignity and concern.

Pastor Marty – Growing Up in the Slums” Do you remember your childhood? Pastor Marty does. He grew up in the slums of Mumbai in extreme poverty. Through many hardships, Marty lost all hope—until he encountered the love of Jesus in a genuine and practical way: the healing of his son. After graduating from a Bible college, he returned to the slum he grew up in and began passionately sharing Jesus’ love with those who are struggling.

Watch and Pray

As you watch these videos, may you be encouraged by the Lord’s beautiful work in Asia. Thank you for praying for the people of Asia and for GFA’s ministry among them.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing a Gospel For Asia supported church that started out as a house gathering, and the simple church building through which many found hope & life in Jesus.

Vaijayi was supposed to be dead. His doctor had given him only four days to live. That was on Tuesday, and today was Sunday—five days later. As Vaijayi walked through the doors of the church, there was hope that he might live.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing a Gospel For Asia supported church that started out as a house gathering, and the simple church building through which many found hope & life in Jesus.
This house of worship has blessed the congregation that sings praises inside, much like a similar place blessed Pastor Tapan’s fellowship.

Worshiping in a Small House

When Gospel for Asia-supported pastor Tapan and his family moved into Vaijayi’s village several years earlier, most people were unresponsive to Tapan’s message about Christ’s love. Some mocked the pastor’s small congregation when they saw people gathering in Tapan’s tiny, one-room house for worship.

“These people go to church, but where is their church?” skeptics sneered. “This is not good, to live in the same house and pray in it.”

Many fellowships in Asia worship together in small homes, huts or even the outdoors, simply because they don’t have the ability to construct a church building. Those who are unable to fit inside are exposed to the hot sun or pouring rain. Many are ridiculed by their neighbors, who see it as a disgrace to worship in such a manner.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan
This congregation is crowded together in a pastor’s home for worship.

Others in Vaijayi’s village directly opposed the believers by trying to put a stop to the worship services, even beating Pastor Tapan and people within the fellowship. But with the Lord’s help, the congregation stood firm in their faith and were able to overcome their struggles.

Still, Pastor Tapan knew his tiny home wasn’t sufficient. He and the believers asked the Lord to provide a place of worship that could accommodate the people—a prayer they would continue in for nearly five years.

Five Years of Prayer

Finding a plot of land proved to be difficult, however. Yet Pastor Tapan’s congregation kept praying, setting aside special times to fast and seek the Lord. The believers were eventually able to buy land and begin construction after nearly five years of consistent prayer.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan
While Pastor Tapan’s congregation was able to meet in his home until a place of worship was established in his village, other congregations meet outside for worship, like the one shown here did, because none of the village homes are large enough to house the believers.

Almost a year later, the construction was finally completed. Now, instead of ridiculing the believers, curious villagers came to look at the new structure, which gave Pastor Tapan the opportunity to share the love of Christ with them. Many are intrigued to learn about the God believers worship when services are held in a structure made for worship instead of a tiny home.

The people noticed the love of God in Pastor Tapan’s life, and many of them returned a second time to talk with him and ask for prayer. Tapan happily agreed to pray for the people’s needs, and when the Lord answered his prayers, many started to attend services held at the church. One of these people was Vaijayi.

Four Days to Live

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Like Vaijayi, this sick man was blessed and comforted by a Gospel for Asia-supported pastor.
Like Vaijayi, this sick man was blessed and comforted by a Gospel for Asia-supported pastor.

Vaijayi had throat cancer. He tried offering sacrifices to the goddess he worshiped to find healing, but he received no answer from her. Then Vaijayi tried to buy relief, at great expense to himself, from an old man who practiced black magic. Instead, his condition worsened, and soon he was unable to eat. Finally, he had someone take him to a hospital.

“He will not live for more than four days,” the doctor stated. “You can take him back home.”

Vaijayi fell into deep depression. The doctor’s words tumbled over and over again in his mind; he thought of nothing else. His whole family, too, suffered in agony.

Two days had come and gone when a believer from Pastor Tapan’s church came to Vaijayi with good news. She told him about the new house of worship, saying, “In my church, I have seen many people receive healing through prayer. If you are willing, you can also come for prayer.”

“I have only two more days left until my death anyway,” Vaijayi told her in desperation. “Take me to your church for prayer.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: These men are part of a congregation that meets together regularly for prayer and worship.
These men are part of a congregation that meets together regularly for prayer and worship.

Prayers Result in Successful Operation

The next day, Vaijayi and his family set out for the new place of worship. Once there, Pastor Tapan told them about Christ’s healing power and prayed for the sick man. The family went home, and soon Vaijayi noticed the swelling in his throat diminish. They knew it was Jesus who brought him relief.

The day Vaijayi was supposed to die came, but Vaijayi lived instead! The following day, the family returned to the church to attend Sunday morning worship. Once again, Pastor Tapan and the believers prayed for Vaijayi’s healing.

Later, during a second visit to the hospital, a doctor suggested an operation to get rid of the cancer completely. Though Vaijayi had no money to cover such an expense, God provided for a successful operation at no cost to Vaijayi, who gives the glory to God.

“The doctors said that I would not live for more than four days, and I thought my life on this earth would end within a few days,” Vaijayi declares. “But it is the Lord who healed me and provided money for the operation, and He turned my operation into a success.”

Gospel For Asia Supported Church Blesses Village

What started out as a house gathering has turned into a blessing for many. A simple church building did more than make a way for Vaijayi to receive encouragement from Pastor Tapan. Inside, Vaijayi met Jesus—and the promise of future life with Him.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: God blessed these believers with a new place of worship just like He blessed Pastor Tapan’s congregation with one through their prayers.
God blessed these believers with a new place of worship just like He blessed Pastor Tapan’s congregation with one through their prayers.

Church buildings like the one which Vaijayi now worships in bring people together, provide shelter from the weather and serve as a permanent gathering place for growing congregations. Those who are more skeptical of believers often find the joy of Christ when, out of curiosity, they attend an indoor worship service.

You can help a growing congregation like Vaijayi’s.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Marty, a Gospel for Asia-supported Pastor serving in slum ministry in the vicious South Asian slums he was born and raised in.

The faintest hints of the sun’s rays begin to streak across the sky and bounce off the plastic-tarp rooftops as one man makes his way along the narrow alleyways of the slum. Some people recognize him and smile; others take little notice. Many have known him since childhood. The man steps around dirty puddles and piles of garbage; he ducks under low-hanging wash lines, strung between houses and laden with wet clothes. Every morning, Pastor Martin walks this route with purpose and prayer.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Marty, a Gospel for Asia-supported Pastor serving in slum ministry in the vicious South Asian slums he was born and raised in.

Eating from the Garbage Bin

Martin, also known as Marty, lives and ministers in the same South Asian slum he was born and raised in. As a young boy in a poor family, he often dug for food in the bottom of dirty garbage bins to fill his empty stomach. He and his mother were left alone when his father died of alcoholism, and in sixth grade, Marty suddenly found himself shouldering the responsibilities as the new head of the family. The daily struggles and addictions each day holds for a child living in the slum had been his own.

“Most of these children’s parents are my friends. We went to school together,” Pastor Marty explains. “But most of them dropped out; they could not continue the studies by seventh or eighth [grade] … They started indulging [in] wrong things, and they started to drink. Some of them are even dead. So I started thinking about their children: Why [don’t] we do something for their children?”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: "He does what Jesus would have done. Helping the poor and needy and also loving people … He is always willing to help people."
“He does what Jesus would have done. Helping the poor and needy and also loving people … He is always willing to help people.”

Living Today with No Hope for Tomorrow

Life in the slums is a vicious, generational cycle. Alcoholic husbands provide families with little money and even less leadership. Wives, many uneducated, take up daily labor jobs to try to stay afloat. Children drop out of school as early as second grade to help earn money. Some kids never step foot inside a school at all—their families are unable to pay for water or electricity, let alone their kids’ education.

Garbage litters the streets. Dirty drinking water and the absence of simple hygienic practices like hand-washing cause disease rates to soar. Prostitution, sex trafficking and other crimes hold countless people in bondage with no escape.

“I went through what these children are going through,” Marty says. “That gave me a burden . . . and pain in my heart.”

Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Slum ministry.

Pastor Returns to Where He Started

In 2006, the Lord led Pastor Marty to start what would become the first ministry in the slum where he grew up: a Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported Bridge of Hope center. Now nine years later, there is a second Bridge of Hope center and three Gospel for Asia (GFA)-supported churches. God has blessed Marty’s efforts amidst the hopelessness of the slum.

“[He] is a great example for us as he represents Jesus,” one believer says of Pastor Marty. “He does what Jesus would have done. Helping the poor and needy and also loving people … He is always willing to help people.”

After going on his neighborhood prayer walk every morning, Marty comes home and spends time reading and meditating on the Word and prays for each individual in his church by name. He and his wife, Prina, know dependence on the Lord is essential to their ministry.

“That is one of the reasons I am growing in the Lord [and am] able to do ministry,” Marty insists. “That’s what I have also taught my family.”

Prina knew nothing about city life when she married Marty in 1999. The slums frightened her at first, but when her husband graduated from a two-year Bible college and became a pastor, she encouraged him to minister to the people he grew up with. Now they serve in the slum together as husband and wife, telling people about the powerful love of Jesus.

“If we are afraid,” Prina says, “we cannot do ministry. So we need both God’s guidance and strength.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Serving others through slum ministry.

Pain for a Purpose

Because Pastor Marty has lived in the slums his whole life, locals relate well to him. They feel at ease and are willing to open up and share their lives with him.

“He knows the situation, experienced the situation, and [grew up] in the same situation,” one believer explains about Marty. “He understands [the slum life] better than anyone else.”

Marty is reminded of his difficult past on a continual basis. Yet he knows every hurt, every trial and every tear has an eternal purpose.

“Ever since my childhood, the pain and difficult situations and poverty—all those things,” Pastor Marty says, “when I look back, [they] were tools in the Lord’s hands to make me strong and to trust and [have] faith in Him, so I would, in the future, do ministry.”
