Patheos: Public Theology

Christian Nationalism Resources

Both Russian Christian Nationalism (RCN) and American Christian Nationalism (ACN) are dangerous ideologies sprouting from cultural flower beds fertilized by anxiety. Growing like weeds in the anxiety flower bed are resentment over loss of reliable traditions, xenophobia against migrants, distrust in government institutions, confusion over what to believe on social media, and fear that violence is out of control. Suddenly, tyranny looks more secure than democracy. Are there Christian Nationalism Resources available? Yes, indeed.

Theologically, we have learned that anxiety — if not relieved by faith — can give birth to sin. This sin takes the form of self-justification, scapegoating, and sometimes violence. The Christian public theologian is called upon to understand this cultural upheaval in terms of widespread anxiety. A self-righteous curse against the evils of nationalist ideologies only exacerbates an already contentious situation. The public theologian is called upon to pave a path toward faith as trust. Only when trusting faith takes over does compassion become possible.
