Oldie-But-Goodie: The Magic of Prince Rupert’s Drops

Oldie-But-Goodie: The Magic of Prince Rupert’s Drops 2015-07-22T17:29:15-06:00

Rupert_of_the_RhineStill not in a fit state to post anything meaningful. …which, I tell myself hopefully/delusionally, is somehow different than the state in which I normally post. (Pipe down back there. I’m trying to be encouraging. To myself.)

While I wait for the medical merry-go-round to come to a stop — or even just to slow down a bit — I’m posting this amazing video from SmarterEveryDay on the astonishing phenomenon known as Prince Rupert’s Drops. (Or, if you’re still in a mean mood, “Dutch tears.”)

More descriptively, they’re “glass objects created by dripping molten glass into cold water.” Objects which, as this video shows, have some pretty unusual properties.

(Also, yes. I realize I just called a video from March, 2013 an “oldie.” But let’s be honest. When it comes to the Internet, “2.5 Years Ago” is practically Jurassic. Now please excuse me while I go find some cold water. And molten glass. For…reasons.)
