WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Syon, his family, his struggle with alcohol addiction, the heart transformation by God and lifting from poverty through Gospel for Asia pastor.

Syon’s family knew he needed help. His drinking had become unbearable; he couldn’t go a single day without alcohol in his system. Syon’s wife, Badriya, feared for her family. She was tired of the fighting, frustration and abuse Syon inflicted on them. At his worst, Syon had tried to kill her, and she worried that, unless something changed, he would try again.

Transformation and Trust

Gospel for Asia pastor Jyomon began his ministry in Syon’s village in 2003. After he met Syon and Badriya, he soon discovered the struggles within their family. Pastor Jyomon prayed for Syon every day and visited them weekly. Before long, the Holy Spirit moved in Syon’s life and helped him give up his drinking habit. Seeing the radical transformation, Syon and his family trusted in Jesus for everything in their lives and became involved in the church’s activities.

A few years later, Gospel for Asia pastor Sadiq took over Pastor Jyomon’s ministry. Syon and Badriya developed a good relationship with their new pastor and encouraged him. Syon would even go with Pastor Sadiq to pray for sick people in his area.

Discussing Syon, his family, his alcohol addiction, the heart transformation by God and lifting from poverty through Gospel for Asia pastor.

Syon’s family was very poor. Syon worked in construction, and he made very little money. However, despite their limited income, the family never skipped giving to the church. When Pastor Sadiq saw the needs of Syon’s family and their faithfulness to the church, he gifted them with a cow. Over time, Syon’s gift multiplied as the cow gave birth to calves. He used the dung to fertilize his new paddy field and was able to earn a good income from the harvest. In just a few years, Syon accumulated enough in savings to replace the leaky roof of his house, which was a tremendous blessing to his family.

With the Lord’s continued blessings in his life, Syon and his family grew in their knowledge and love of the Lord. They shared their testimony with other villagers and told of how God had so wonderfully cared for their every need. Through their testimony, five people in their village came to know Christ’s redemption.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada, founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan) and community volunteers are preparing to give away hundreds of free food packages Saturday, Sept. 19 to help local families impacted by COVID-19.

This month’s food distribution will be the third monthly food giveaway at GFA World’s headquarters in Wills Point, benefiting families largely from Van Zandt and Kaufman counties.

GROCERY GIVEAWAY: Bishop Danny Yohannan of Wills Point-based ministry Gospel for Asia (GFA World), Wills Point Mayor Mark Turner and other local volunteers help distribute USDA “Farmers to Families” food boxes to support local families impacted by the COVID-19 downturn. GFA World will hold another food giveaway Sat. Sept. 19 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. — or until USDA food boxes run out — at its campus at 1116 St. Thomas Way, Wills Point.

The international mission agency — known for its humanitarian work in Asia — is planning to stage local food distributions every month while supplies last.

To help the local community during the pandemic, Gospel for Asia (GFA World) is partnering with Body of Life (www.bodyoflife.org) — a Christian nonprofit spearheading efforts to feed hungry people across Texas.

Last month, hundreds of families received USDA “Farmers to Families” produce boxes, loaded into their vehicles by local volunteers, including Gospel for Asia (GFA World) vice president Bishop Danny Yohannan and Wills Point Mayor Mark Turner.

Next Event: Sept. 19

“If anyone is in need of food, we invite them to come to our next event on Sept. 19,” Yohannan said. The event will take place at GFA World’s campus at 1116 St. Thomas Way in Wills Point, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. — or until USDA food boxes run out — on Sat. Sept. 19.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) is also helping to feed hungry families on the other side of the world.

“While we’ve been able to distribute food here in Texas, thousands of our parishes in Asia are distributing food to tens of thousands of families each month during this Covid-19 crisis,” Yohannan said. “Even in the midst of this pandemic, God has given the church worldwide great opportunities to love others with his love in tangible ways.”

Anyone interested can follow GFA World on Facebook to stay in the loop about upcoming local food giveaways at the ministry’s headquarters, as well as the organization’s work overseas.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing the hardships of Narottam, the daily heavy labor, and Gospel for Asia (GFA) who helped provide a bicycle that now helps him support his family without overstraining his body.

Discussing the hardships of heavy labor & Gospel for Asia who provide a bicycle that helps him support families lessening burdens

Beads of sweat formed on Narottam’s forehead as he walked the long road to his destination. The heavy loads of bamboo and firewood that he carried day after day made his 37-year-old body ache. Deep down, Narottam wondered how much longer his body could withstand the strain, but he forced himself to keep going. His family depended on him.

A Tired Body and Weary Mind

Narottam sold wood and bamboo in addition to his work as a farmer to provide for his family’s basic needs. With no vehicle to transport the heavy loads, he had to carry them by hand and on foot wherever he went—a slow and grueling task. Yet for all the effort Narottam put forth, he couldn’t afford to send his children to a good school, and his unreliable income made it impossible to pull his family out of poverty.

Then one day, a simple gift changed Narottam’s future. When the struggling father attended a Gospel for Asia (GFA) gift distribution, he received a bicycle, and his joy knew no bounds. Now he is able to carry and sell larger loads of wood without straining his body, and his mind is at ease, knowing he’ll be able to provide for his family in years to come. Narottam is thankful to those who sponsored a gift in his time of need—he has received help for his weary body and found peace in God’s hands.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing the Gospel for Asia workers who care for the least of these amidst the threat of starvation and the COVID 19 pandemic.

Jarbai spent a typical day catching fish and crabs from the local river to sell at market. Her son worked as a daily laborer, supplementing the money from Jarbai’s daily catches. While meager, the earnings they pulled in were just enough to survive—at least until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discussing the Gospel for Asia workers who care for the least of these amidst the threat of starvation and the COVID 19 pandemic.
Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers packed food items to give to people, such as Jarbai, to help them get through the pandemic.

Hunger, Starvation Amidst COVID 19 Crisis

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, many countries imposed a nationwide lockdown. Families already trapped in poverty, including Jarbai’s, could not work, and no work meant no food. Millions went to bed hungry, night after night.

The threat of starvation, mingled with the threat of COVID-19, left cities, villages and communities in fear. However, Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers across Asia did what they could to help combat this double threat of hunger and sickness.

After obtaining the necessary permission from local authorities, Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers in Jarbai’s area sought families particularly at risk of hunger and brought them packets of food. Over the course of several weeks, these faithful workers divided, packaged and distributed thousands of pounds of dry goods, such as rice, potatoes, onions, dal, oil and soap, to families in need.

“My son works as a daily laborer and I catch fish and crabs from the river to sell, but due to the lockdown we cannot do this.,” explained Jarbai. “The food items are a great help for me and my family. I am happy and thankful to [the church] from the bottom of my heart.”

The Grateful and Thankful

Other recipients joined their voices with Jarbai’s, adding their thanks.

“I am happy and thankful that [the church] stood beside me and provided food items for me and my family so we can be sustained during this lockdown,” says 52-year-old Meherbai.

One man, Gajinder, turned down the food package, despite coming from a poor background. He told the workers to give it to a family worse off than him.

“I am happy that my [church] will stand and always be there to help the helpless,” he said.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Khadim, the discouragements and grinding poverty, and the income-generating gifts from Gospel for Asia’s Christmas Gift Catalog that brought hope, encouragement and joy.

Khadim plodded toward home, weary from his diligent efforts to provide for his wife and two children. He had spent the entire day looking for labor jobs—anything that would put food on the table and care for his family—but he came home disappointed with the wages of his hard work. It just wasn’t enough.

Meager Meals and an Unstable Income

The families in Khadim’s community depended on agriculture for their livelihoods and diligently cultivated their crops. But Khadim didn’t own farmland and couldn’t get a stable job, no matter how hard he tried. The 35-year-old father went from place to place seeking daily labor jobs, but some days he couldn’t find any work, and he struggled to provide for his family.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing the grinding poverty in Khadim's life, and the income-generating gifts from Gospel for Asia's Christmas Gift Catalog that brought hope and joy.
Khadim, like this man, struggled to provide for his family. His income relied on unpredictable labor jobs, until he received a gift that changed his life.

Khadim’s life held little joy, and he often fought disappointment and discouragement. He somehow managed to provide some food for his wife and kids, but nothing enabled him to meet all of their needs.

Experiencing the Compassion of the Body of Christ

Khadim began his relationship with Jesus many years ago, and his love for Christ was strong, despite his troubles. He worshiped the Lord at a fellowship led by Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Udyan. He tried to participate in the church activities, but searching for work every day meant Khadim often missed the fellowship gatherings.

His troubles did not go unnoticed by his church family. Pastor Udyan saw the diligent efforts of the young father to care for his family, and he thought of a way to help relieve Khadim’s burden.

Through the generosity of believers living many miles away, Pastor Udyan had the opportunity to bless people in his community with income-generating gifts from Gospel for Asia’s Christmas Gift Catalog. When the time came to distribute the gifts, Pastor Udyan knew exactly which families needed help the most—and Khadim’s was one of those families.

Hardworking Father Equipped to Thrive

As a practical demonstration of God’s love and care, the careworn father received a gift that changed his family: a brand new bicycle rickshaw! With this new, consistent source of income, Khadim’s hard work began to pay off.

Hope provided through Gospel for Asia's Christmas gift catalog Gospel for Asia (founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan)
Farmers hired Khadim to cart their produce to market, which enabled him to consistently support his family. Rickshaws provide a stable income for their owners, as this other young rickshaw driver can testify.

Bicycle rickshaws are versatile modes of transportation in Khadim’s area; some carry passengers, while others transport cargo. Pedaling bicycle rickshaws can be physically demanding, but Khadim wholeheartedly thrust his energy and strength into his new occupation.

Farmers in Khadim’s community began hiring Khadim to bring their produce to the market, while other families wanted him to bring their groceries home for them. Khadim’s rickshaw even enabled him to start working at construction sites, where he was able to haul bricks and bags of cement.

Heart and Home Impacted by Gospel for Asia’s Christmas Gift Catalog

Now, Khadim uses his rickshaw for labor work between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and then he goes out again during the evening to transport parcels for villagers. Thanks to his new source of income, Khadim’s children don’t have to worry about whether they will have food or not, and Khadim’s wife has the resources she needs to run the household.

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: The rickshaws given to this man and to Khadim bring smiles to their faces and remind them of God’s love and care for their families.
The rickshaws given to this man and to Khadim bring smiles to their faces and remind them of God’s love and care for their families.

Khadim still works hard to care for his family, but the generous gift from the Body of Christ brought a greater stability to his financial situation and removed the burden of discouragement that weighed on his heart.

“I am really thankful to Almighty God and to the Church for having concern [for my family] and providing me with a cycle rickshaw,” Khadim shared. “It was timely help when I was struggling in my life, and the Church took care of me.”

Khadim’s family no longer lives hand-to-mouth. Khadim even faithfully tithes his earnings—just one of many ways he expresses his gratitude to the Lord for His provision and grace.

Although Khadim’s rickshaw is a simple tool of metal and wood made to carry things like vegetables and bricks, it also carries hope, encouragement and joy for him and his family. It is a continual reminder of their Savior’s loving care, and it inspires praise and thanksgiving.

To the Lord and to those who helped lift him out of discouragement and grinding poverty, Khadim gratefully says, “Thank you, very much.”

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Whether it’s a heavy-duty cargo rickshaw or a festive passenger rickshaw, these useful gifts can bring a family out of despair and poverty.
Whether it’s a heavy-duty cargo rickshaw or a festive passenger rickshaw, these useful gifts can bring a family out of despair and poverty.

You can give other struggling parents, like Khadim and his wife, the ability to provide for their children, and remind them of God’s great love. Give an income-generating gift today through Gospel for Asia’s Christmas Gift Catalog.

GFA pastor Bhaskar hung up the phone after talking to yet another one of the 270 people who regularly attended his church. Coordinating a distribution program during the COVID-19 pandemic took an even greater amount of planning and care than usual, due to the precautions needed. There were definitely people in the area where he served who needed help.

Pastor Bhaskar with two women blessed with food packages.

When the COVID-19 lockdown first went into place, Pastor Bhaskar urged his congregation to look for any ways to help needy families around them. The majority of villagers farm for a living; whether or not they went to bed hungry depended on if they could sell their crops at the market—but the lockdown kept them home. Food was in major demand; rice, tomatoes, potatoes and bottle gourds would be perfect items to distribute.

Pastor Bhaskar and his congregation helped 25 families by providing groceries.

Mohisha, a 48-year-old mother, received a bag of the much-needed groceries.

“I was thinking to whom I shall share my agony that I and my family members are going through,” she said.

“We do not have money to purchase anything that we need. … But today, in the right time, the church provided us vegetables and some other food items. As a family we are deeply grateful to the church pastor and believers for their love and care that they have shown us.”

GFA Bridge of Hope centers are serving as community kitchens while workers minister to families worst affected by COVID-19-related hunger.

In Jharkhand, Bridge of Hope staff set up a community kitchen and daily have fed 300 of those hardest hit by the crisis, including street dwellers and daily wage laborers.

Workers at two centers in Bihar identified the most needy in their area. After obtaining proper government permission, they provided food for 200 families, which was a great blessing to the communities. Recipients expressed joy and gratitude to leaders for showing love and remembering them in this difficult situation.

“I am very happy to have the yummy food,” said Abeer. “I and my family have been going through financial crisis for the last two months, but today we feel very happy.”

Another recipient, Ushta, said, “[The church] is the one who always helped us in our difficult situation, and I am so glad to receive the meal from them today.”

Praiksha in Madhya Pradesh had heard of people distributing food to the poor, but no one had reached him. After a Bridge of Hope event, he said, “I am now so happy that [the Bridge of Hope center] has given us essential items that we really needed. Thank you so much.”

Compassion for Migrant Workers Amid COVID 19

Gospel for Asia (GFA) Sisters of Compassion in Jammu ministered to migrant workers living in tents or one-room homes in the slums. Many workers have been separated from their families because of travel restrictions and have struggled financially because of not being able to work. The sisters gave them packets of groceries and assured them they would pray for each of the families’ needs.

Local police officers accompanied the Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers to ensure people followed the safety guidelines. The head constable also directed workers to a man and his son living beside the station who were in particular need and had sought help at the station just a few days prior. In response to the head constable’s request, this man also received groceries, for which he was very grateful.

After seeing the ministry and care for those in need provided by the pastors and Sisters of Compassion, one police officer offered to help them whenever they needed it.

“Good job,” he told them. “You have done a great effort. Thank you for the compassionate heart of yours.”

Palash, a father of three originally from Bihar, and his wife normally work in a box-manufacturing factory. But since the factory closed, they have been unable to earn an income.

“We had little rice and wheat flour,” Palash says. “Since we are from other states, I do not have a Ration Card to get groceries from the ration shop. I was anxious about the days ahead. But at the right time, you have given the necessary items for our food. … Thank you so much for having concerns about us.”

Jaiman is a widow from Chhattisgarh who works at the nearby pencil factory to provide for herself and her 4-year-old son, but she has been unable to do so with the factory’s closure.

“Thank you for the food items,” Jaiman said. “Almost all my groceries finished, and I was worried about the food, especially for my son. Now we will be able to survive with the grocery items for the next few weeks.”

Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers and volunteers prepare to hand out ration packs to struggling men and women.

Before this, Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Alik had seen families going to bed hungry. People were starving, and Pastor Alik knew how to help. After visiting the local authorities and obtaining their permission, the pastor immediately set about organizing and planning a food distribution.

Volunteers from the local church along with some civic workers carefully bundled together hundreds of pounds of rice, beans, biscuits, oil, soap and masks. Once ready, the team spent nearly five hours handing out the packages to those who had come from families in five nearby villages.

Pranjeeta, a 32-year-old widow with two sons under the age of 6, normally works as a maid. She thanked the team for the ration kit, saying,

“I am deeply happy and thankful to [the church] for providing us with the ration kits during this time of crisis.”

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Bindhiya, her ministry in the slums alongside her husband, GFA pastor Sachitan, amid the Coronavirus lockdown.

Bindhiya leads a busy life serving Christ in partnership with her husband, Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Sachitan. When the COVID-19 pandemic kept Bindhiya at home, she felt powerless—but not for long.

Bindhiya gave face masks to children in a nearby slum.

Bindhiya obtained a degree in nursing, but since marrying her husband, she takes care of people in very different ways. She faithfully serves the women of her congregation and community and leads the local Women’s Fellowship group. As an accomplished tailor, Bindhiya teaches girls in her church and women in her village how to sew. Many can now sew their own clothes.

This girl told Bindhiya, “Thank you, didi [older sister], for this mask.”
During the lockdown, compassion filled Bindhiya’s heart as she watched children wandering in her village and in the nearby slum. They played together without face masks, and she knew they risked transmitting the virus. Concern prompted her to action.

Bindhiya gathered all the cotton scraps she could find and sewed 100 face masks. Then she went to her village and the nearby slum and handed out the masks to children in need. She gave each child an extra mask to give to a friend. Soon, when other children saw their friends receiving face masks, they came and asked for masks too.

The children covered their mouths with the face masks right away, but Bindhiya could still hear grateful words spilling from their lips.

“Thank you for this mask,” said one boy. “I wanted one, but my parents could not buy it for me. Surely, I will wear a mask when I go out.”

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Jamar and Evelyn, their family’s struggle with poverty, the common suffering of illnesses brought about by malnutrition, and the medical care brought near by Gospel for Asia (GFA) Bridge of Hope.

amar and Evelyn were fortunate to be working. Income as a driver and schoolteacher kept their family of four floating above the extreme poverty line that so many of their neighbors were submerged under.

Discussing struggles with poverty, illnesses brought about by malnutrition, and the medical care brought near by Gospel for Asia supported Bridge of Hope.
Despite their steady jobs, Jamar and his wife struggled to afford healthy foods and medical care for themselves or their young daughters.

The rural area where Jamar and his family lived was lush with tea plantations and family farms. The markets were filled with eggs, chicken and meat products. But all these healthy foods were out of reach for most of the working population who earned less than $5 a day. Spending more than half of that amount on a dozen eggs was a luxury families could not afford.

Jamar and Evelyn stuck to rice, lentils and vegetables twice a day, like most in their community. On rare occasions, Jamar would spend two days of hard-earned income on a meager feast of chicken for his family.

This lack of nutritious food meant most of the villagers suffered from vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition—and subsequent illnesses like skin problems, respiratory issues and eye problems. Furthermore, living so rurally meant they did not have access to medical care, nor could they afford it if they did.

Bridge of Hope Hosts Medical Camp

The Bridge of Hope center that Jamar’s daughter, Abby, attended organized a free medical camp for the local community. Medical professionals from a district hospital came and provided free medications and vitamins to the malnourished population.

Jamar and Evelyn found support for their family through the local Bridge of Hope center. Their eldest daughter, Abby, was enrolled at the center as a first grader. At Bridge of Hope, Abby received a nutritious meal each day to supplement what she ate at home, and she got help with her schoolwork while her parents worked each day to support her and her baby sister.

One day at Abby’s Bridge of Hope center anticipation hung in the air when the staff announced the center was going to organize a free medical camp. That night Abby told her parents the exciting news.

Grateful for the opportunity to get free medical services, Jamar coordinated with the parents of other Bridge of Hope students to volunteer at the medical camp. They passed out flyers to the surrounding communities, cleaned the school where the camp would be held and rearranged furniture to accommodate the coming doctors and nurses. Jamar even met with the village government authority, village head, and superintendent of the local tea plantation to get their support.

Blessings Given, Received

Jamar organized parent volunteers to unload medical supplies and set up the camp.

The morning of the medical camp, Jamar and other parent volunteers unloaded medical supplies from the vehicle of the health care team that came from the nearest hospital, which was 15 miles away. The volunteers arranged a make-shift pharmacy in the main hallway of the school. They also set up a seating area for the sick to wait to be seen by a doctor.

After setting up and getting everything ready, Jamar got in line to see the doctor. For the two months prior, he had known something was wrong. He had phlegm build-up and was feeling weaker than normal. The doctor did a thorough checkup for Jamar, diagnosing his phlegm issue as the result of an infection. The doctor prescribed antibiotics to Jamar plus vitamins to help support his daily strength and health.

“To get medicines for any sickness we have to travel 4 kilometers,” Jamar says. “I also did not have money to buy medicines, which are very expensive. I waited for almost two months in order to get medicines, and [now I] received everything free because of the Bridge of Hope medical camp.”

One Day, 500 Blessings

The day was long and filled with patients waiting for medical treatment. More than 500 people came to the medical camp, and everyone who needed vitamins and medications received them freely. As the evening approached, Jamar helped disassemble the camp and put the classrooms back to normal. Over the next days and weeks, Jamar’s respiratory issues subsided, and he felt more alert and physically fit, able to work long hours without the fatigue that plagued him before. Jamar, his family and the entire community flourished after the medical camp.

“I got a lot of good information about my health and the children’s medical needs,” shares Jamar. “This camp was a great help for all our people to receive this kind of free medical care from qualified doctors. … We thank God for this opportunity and pray that God will bless [the church leaders] and all the Bridge of Hope staff for this great service done for our community people.”
