PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan held a presser at the TPC River Highlands golf course at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, just minutes ago to announce and answer press questions about some major changes for the future of the PGA Tour. Four-time major championship winner Brooks Koepka, a native American, broke ranks today from the PGA Tour to join the new, Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series. This departure by Koepka is surely a major blow to the PGA Tour’s resistance to this disruptive upheaval in pro golf. Twenty-seven year old Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England, won the U.S. Open today by one stroke over Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler at the the historic, 140-year old Country Club of Brookline, Massachusetts. It was his first win on the PGA Tour and his first winning of one of the four major championships in golf. This LIV Golf series is in serious competition with the PGA Tour. Last week, its Commissioner Jay Monahan suspended the memberships of the 17 PGA Tour members who competed in the first LIV Golf event held in London last week. Babe Hiskey and I co-founded the PGA Tour Bible Study in 1965. Babe is my close friend and former teammate and roommate at the University of Houston. That group continues to exist on the PGA Tour. It has always met each week during a PGA Tour tournament in an evening before the tournament begins, usually on Wednesday. Brandel Chamblee, a friend of mine, has blasted unmercifully the leading American pro golfers who participated in the first LIV Golf event last weekend in London. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau are the three highest-ranked American pros who have joined LIV Golf. Johnson and Mickelson played in that event last weekend.
