Despicable: Former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin says he pardoned a child rapist because the 9-year-old victim’s hymen was still intact.

NPR reports:

Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin drew widespread condemnation last week when reports highlighted that he’d pardoned more than 400 convicted criminals in his final days in office. Bevin justified his actions by telling The Washington Post, “I’m a believer in second chances.”

In a wide-ranging interview with Kentucky’s WHAS on Thursday, Bevin offered a fresh defense for perhaps his most controversial pardon, that of Micah Schoettle, a 41-year-old man who was convicted of raping a 9-year-old last year.

Bevin’s justification: there was no physical evidence of abuse and the girl’s hymen was “intact.”

The Guardian reports:

When the former Republican governor of Kentucky Matt Bevin was asked in a recent radio interview how he could justify having pardoned on his last day in office a child rapist, he replied: “Which one?”

The interview went downhill from there. Bevin said he had allowed Micah Schoettle, 41, who was serving a 23-year sentence for rape, incest, sodomy and other sexual offenses to walk free last week after less than 18 months in prison because his nine-year-old victim had been found to have her hymen intact.

Trying to justify his horrific decision to pardon Micah Schoettle, who was convicted of raping the 9-year-old last year, Bevin claimed  there was no physical evidence of abuse and that the girl’s hymen was “intact.”

  Bevin said

There was zero evidence of that. This man was convicted purely on something that there’s no corroboration for.

Both their hymens were intact. This is perhaps more specific than people would want, but trust me if you had been repeatedly sexually violated, as a small child, by an adult, there are going to be repercussions of that physically and medically.

After Bevin’s ridiculous justification for his pardon, medical and legal experts were quick to denounce Bevin’s willful ignorance. For example, George Nichols, former chief medical examiner for Kentucky, told the Courier Journal

Rape is not proved by hymen penetration. He not only doesn’t know the law, in my humble opinion, he clearly doesn’t know medicine and anatomy.

Before being pardoned, Schoettle was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2018 on charges of rape, incest, and sodomy.

As for Bevin, he is no stranger to controversy, and has proven himself to be a dangerous Christian extremist. For example:

  • Instead of vaccination, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin deliberately sent all nine of his kids to a chickenpox party to be infected with the disease because he doesn’t like vaccines.
  • Bevin blamed zombies on television for the epidemic of mass shootings plaguing the country.
  • After 17 people were killed in a mass shooting at a public high school in Parkland, Florida, Bevin claimed that violent video games, and not guns, are to blame for the tragedy.
  • Bevin claimed that those who criticize his crime fighting “prayer patrols” are destined for Hell.
  • Bevin said he wasn’t worried about denying poor people Medicaid because he believes health insurance makes people unhealthy.
  • Bevin’s plan to fight violent crime in the city of Louisville was calling for volunteer prayer patrols that would not report or stop criminal activity, but would instead pray the crime away.
  •  Bevin signed an informed consent bill into law that degrades and humiliates women seeking an abortion by forcing them to listen to a patronizing lecture about the supposed perils of the procedure.
  • Bevin declared open season on gay kids by signing a bill legalizing discrimination against LGBT students.

Despite strong support from President Donald Trump, Bevin lost his bid for re-election last month.

Bottom line: Former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, a dangerous Christian extremist, says he pardoned a child rapist because the 9-year-old victim’s hymen was still intact.

Good News: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, a dangerous Christian extremist, lost his bid for re-election last night, despite strong support from President Donald Trump.

Bevin lost an extremely close race to Democratic opponent Andy Beshear. Associated Press reports:

With 100% of precincts reporting, Beshear — the state’s attorney general and the son of Kentucky’s last Democratic governor, Steve Beshear — had a lead of 5,333 votes out of more than 1.4 million counted, or a margin of less than 0.4 percentage points.

However, Bevin is refusing to concede the race. Speaking to supporters assembled at the Galt House in Louisville Tuesday night, Bevin said:

Would it be a Bevin race if it wasn’t a squeaker? I mean come on. This is a close, close race. We are not conceding this race by any stretch.

In his victory speech Governor-elect Beshear said:

My expectation is that he (Bevin) will honor the election that was held tonight, that he will help us make this transition. And I’ll tell you what, we will be ready for that first day in office, and I look forward to it.

Bevin is no stranger to controversy, and has proven himself to be a dangerous Christian extremist. For example:

  • Instead of vaccination, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin deliberately sent all nine of his kids to a chickenpox party to be infected with the disease because he doesn’t like vaccines.

Bottom line: GOP Governor Matt Bevin, a dangerous Christian extremist, lost his bid for re-election despite strong support from President Donald Trump.

Anti-Vaxx Child Abuse: Instead of vaccination, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin deliberately sent all nine of his kids to a chickenpox party to be infected with the disease because he doesn’t like vaccines.

The  Louisville Courier Journal reports:

In a move experts say is medically unsound — and can be dangerous — Gov. Matt Bevin said in a radio interview Tuesday that he deliberately exposed all nine of his children to chickenpox so they would catch the disease and become immune.

In the interview with Kentucky’s WKCT, a Bowling Green talk radio station, Bevin said:

Every single one of my kids had the chickenpox. They got the chickenpox on purpose because we found a neighbor that had it and I went and made sure every one of my kids was exposed to it, and they got it. They had it as children. They were miserable for a few days, and they all turned out fine.

Bevin continued:

And I think, why are we forcing kids to get it (vaccines)? If you are worried about your child getting chickenpox or whatever else, vaccinate your child … But for some people, and for some parents, for some reason they choose otherwise. This is America. The federal government should not be forcing this upon people. They just shouldn’t.

Commenting on the story TPM notes:

The method of exposing children to the virus instead of vaccinating them is a staple of the anti-vaxxer movement. Experts warn the method is unsafe and say that the vaccine makes individuals less likely to get shingles later in life.

The  Louisville Courier Journal notes:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also urges against deliberately exposing kids to chicken pox, including the past practice of “chicken pox parties” held by some parents.

“Chickenpox can be serious and can lead to severe complications and death, even in healthy children,” according to the CDC website.

Medical experts condemned Bevin’s reckless behavior. Dr. Robert Jacobson, a pediatrician and expert in vaccines and childhood diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, said:

I would never recommend or advise it. It’s just dangerous.

Dr. Jacobson added:

We’re no longer living in the 17th century. I really recommend to my parents that they vaccinate their children, that they do it in a timely manner, and they recognize they are doing the right thing for their children.

Bottom line: In a display of reckless ignorance, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin deliberately sent all nine of his kids to a chickenpox party to be infected with the disease because he doesn’t like vaccines.

The stupid, it burns: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin blames zombies on television for the epidemic of mass shootings plaguing the country.

In a radio interview with conservative talk show host Leland Conway, Bevin suggested that zombies on television, and not guns, were to blame for gun violence. The conservative Christian argued that new laws aren’t the solution to gun violence, instead the Republican blamed a “culture of death” in the media and popular culture.

In the interview Bevin said:

It starts with everything from the kind of entertainment that we focus on. What’s the most popular topic that seems to be in every cable television network… Television shows are all about, what? Zombies! I don’t get it…  that’s what we are. We celebrate death.

When a culture is surrounded by, inundated by, rewards things that celebrate death, whether it is zombies in television shows, the number of abortions… there’s a thousand justifications for why we do this. Eventually some of those young minds are not going to be able to handle it, and this is what we’re hearing.

In other words, blame everything but the guns.

Reporting on the story, The Hill notes:

Bevin’s comments, which were first reported by The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., come a week after 12 people were killed by a gunman at a Southern California bar. The suspected killer, identified as 28-year-old Ian David Long, is believed to have taken his own life.

This is not the first time Bevin has tried to shift the blame away from guns when it comes to mass shootings. Earlier this year, after 17 people were killed in a mass shooting at a public high school in Parkland, Florida, Bevin blamed violent video games, and not guns, for the tragedy.

The fact is that Bevin, like many Republican politicians, is bought and paid for by the NRA.

Obviously blaming video games, or zombies on television, for gun violence is dishonest and asinine. If video games and zombies on television were responsible for mass shootings, we would see mass shootings in every country in the world. Yet this is not the case. Mass shootings are a uniquely American phenomenon, whereas zombies on television and video games are international, seen by individuals around the world.

Indeed, Bevin has a track record of idiocy. Previously Bevin suggested that prayer is a legitimate strategy for fighting crime, and made plans to establish “prayer patrols” to fight violent crime in the city of Louisville.

And when critics mocked his plan to fight crime with prayer patrols, the deluded Christian extremist threatened his critics with an eternity in Hell.

Bottom line: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin blames zombies on television for mass shootings.

Blame anything but the guns: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin blames video games, not guns, for the recent Florida school shooting.

After 17 people were killed in a mass shooting at a public high school in Parkland, Florida, the governor of Kentucky wants people to know that violent video games, and not guns, are to blame for the tragedy.

Bevin claims a “culture of death that is being celebrated” via violent video games, TV shows and music is to blame for school shootings.

Bevin explained his dated and discredited theory during a stop in Covington, Kentucky, on Thursday, noting:

We need to have an honest conversation as to what should and should not be allowed in the United States as it relates to the things being put in the hands of our young people.

Bevin continued, and instead of calling out the absurdity of a mentally disturbed teenager being allowed to buy an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, Bevin turned his attention to violent video games, declaring:

I’m a big believer in the First Amendment and right to free speech, but there are certain things that are so graphic as it relates to violence, and things that are so pornographic on a whole nother front that we allow to pass under the guise of free speech, which arguably are. But there is zero redemptive value. There is zero upside to any of this being in the public domain, let alone in the minds and hands and homes of our young people.

(Note: Whenever someone begins a remark with the preface: “I’m a big believer in the First Amendment and right to free speech, but…” You know immediately that that person does not really respect the First Amendment; in the same way you know that when someone says “Some of my best friends are black, but…” you know that that person is really a racist.)

Bevin continued:

Go back before any of this (violent video games) existed. How many children walked into other schools and slaughtered other children? What more evidence do you need? The people who say there is no evidence are full of crap.

Bevin added:

Let’s start a conversation.

Let’s be honest: Bevin doesn’t want to have a conversation about school shootings, he wants to rehash a tired and discredited argument about video games that was dismissed by everyone but the most obsessed Christian extremists in 1990’s.

If Bevin really wanted to “start a conversation” about school shootings he would have the courage to address the prominent, and by definition, necessary role that guns play in every school shooting.

However, Bevin, like many Republican politicians, is bought and paid for by the NRA.

Blaming video games is dishonest and asinine. If video games were responsible for school shootings, we would see school shootings in every country in the world. Yet this is not the case. School shootings are a uniquely American phenomenon, whereas video games are global, played by individuals around the world.

This is not the first time Bevin has suggested that video games are responsible for school shootings. Bevin made similar claims after a school shooting in his own state left two students dead and 18 injured at Marshall County High School.

And this is not the first idiotic suggestion from the Kentucky governor.

Bottom line: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin blames video games, not guns, for the recent Florida school shooting.

And so it goes.

Tough talking Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin claims those who criticize his crime fighting “prayer patrols” are destined for Hell.

In a recent Facebook video an angry Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin attacked critics of his laughable proposal for “prayer patrols” to fight violent crime in the city of Louisville. Using Bible verses, the In his Facebook video the Christian extremist Republican governor attacked critics of his novel “pray the crime away” strategy, suggesting his critics will go to Hell for mocking his plan:

The following is a brief excerpt from Bevin’s remarks:

… I’m not gonna get into a back and forth with “leaders” of the faith-based community who have come out in opposition to the idea of praying. I’m a little shocked at that.

…  they came out and said that the discussion of prayer made them need barf bags. That was from an associate pastor at the largest church in our inner city. The senior pastor of that very same church said this was one of those most divisive things that he’s ever seen, dividing blacks and whites.

… I don’t know that we’re diving the races as much as we are separating the sheep from the goats. I think they’ll understand what I’m saying on that front.

The key phrase here is “we are separating the sheep from the goats.” Writing for the Courier-Journal, Joseph Gerth notes that the phrase is an allusion to “a passage in the Gospel of Matthew describing the second coming of Christ and how at that time Christ will separate the good from the bad, much the same way that a shepherd separates sheep from goats.”

In other words, Bevin is claiming that critics of his ridiculous pray the violent crime away strategy via “prayer patrols”  are going to Hell.

At a press conference earlier this month Governor Bevin unveiled his ludicrous plan to fight violent crime in the city of Louisville. At the event Bevin made a call to establish volunteer “prayer patrols” that would not report or stop criminal activity, but would instead attempt to pray the crime away.

To their credit, some of Bevin’s harshest critics were pastors angry at the absurd suggestion that prayer patrols were a legitimate response to violent crime. Bevin was particularly angry at two local pastors for criticizing his plan. The Courier-Journal reports:

He (Bevin) was lashing out at the Rev. Kevin Cosby, senior pastor of St. Stephen Church, who wrote in a recent column in the Courier-Journal that Bevin’s call for prayer walks as a solution to West End violence “set race relations back in Louisville more than any single act in recent years.”

And Bevin was attacking the Rev. Joe Phelps, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, who wrote in another column that the governor’s “tepid non-plan was an embarrassment to Christianity.”

Bottom line: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin believes prayer is a legitimate strategy for fighting crime, and is establishing “prayer patrols” to fight violent crime in the city of Louisville. And, according to Bevin, if you don’t support his plan, you are going to Hell.

Justice: A federal appeals court has ruled that former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, the anti-gay Kentucky clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, must pay $224,000 in legal fees incurred for violating the civil rights of same-sex couples.

Friendly Atheist reports:

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that former Rowan County (KY) Clerk Kim Davis is responsible for paying nearly $225,000 in court costs and attorneys’ fees after losing a legal battle for defying the law when she refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

Commenting on the decision, William E. Sharp, cooperating attorney for the ACLU of Kentucky, said:

The Court of Appeals correctly found that April Miller and the other ACLU clients prevailed by forcing the former Clerk to abandon her unlawful policy of withholding marriage licenses from the public. By affirming the sizeable fee award, the Court also sent a strong message to other government officials in Kentucky that it is not only unconstitutional to use public office to impose one’s personal religious views on others, but that it also can be a very expensive mistake.

Previously, lawyers for Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin declared that former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis must pay the $224,000 in legal fees incurred because she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports:

Citing “conduct that violates civil rights,” lawyers for Gov. Matt Bevin say former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis should be held responsible for nearly $225,000 in legal fees and court costs incurred by couples who sued her in 2015 when she refused to issue marriage licenses because of her religious opposition to same-sex marriage.

Writing in a legal brief, Bevin attorney Palmer G. Vance II stated:

Her local policy stood in direct conflict with her statutory obligation to issue marriage licenses to qualified Kentucky couples. The local policy also undermined the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s interest in upholding the rule of law.

Davis had an independent and sworn duty to uphold the law as an elected county officer. If fees are awarded, they must be the responsibility of the Rowan County clerk’s office, which should be deterred from engaging in conduct that violates civil rights — and leads to costly litigation.

Davis made national headlines for her refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in June of 2015.

In 2015 Davis spent five days behind bars for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses — something she was legally obligated to do under state and federal law.

An Apostolic Christian, Davis claimed that issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples would violate her deeply held religious beliefs.

Previously, before going to jail, in an exclusive interview to Fox News, Davis said:

I’ve weighed the cost and I’m prepared to go to jail, I sure am. This has never been a gay or lesbian issue for me. This is about upholding the word of God.

This is a heaven or hell issue for me and for every other Christian that believes. This is a fight worth fighting.

Davis became a Christian martyr after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. In fact, the anti-gay county clerk from Kentucky who went to jail in a futile attempt to prevent same-sex marriage was honored with the 2015 “Cost of Discipleship Award” at the Values Voter Summit in Washington D.C.

However, Davis lost her bid for re-election in 2018.

Bottom line: Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who went to jail rather than give gays a marriage license, must pay $224,000 in legal fees incurred because she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, and in so doing violated the civil rights of same-sex couples trying to get married.

Former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, the anti-gay Kentucky clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, wants taxpayers to pay her $222,000 legal fees incurred for violating the civil rights of same-sex couples.

Rolling Stone reports:

Davis — ousted from her clerk job in an election last November — has filed her own legal brief in the case, countering that Kentucky taxpayers must be forced to pay for her religious objections: “The Commonwealth is liable,” her legal team argues, “because Davis acted as a state official for purposes of marriage licensing.”

Earlier this week lawyers for Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin said former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis must pay $222,000 in legal fees incurred because she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Now layers for Davis are trying to escape the debt.

Davis, the county clerk who illegally denied marriage licenses to gay couples, is asking the court to force taxpayers to pay her $222,000 legal bill.

Kentucky Governor Bevin, a conservative Christian, once pledged his support to Davis, but now his lawyers are claiming Davis must pay.

GOP candidate tweets death threat: He’s “pro life,” but he loves guns, and he threatened to shoot a congressman for opposing the NRA.

Carl Nett, a Republican candidate for Kentucky secretary of state, is facing a national backlash after claiming he would like to shoot Democratic Congressman John Yarmuth because the Democrat opposes the National Rifle Association (NRA), America’s premier terrorist organization.

Nett issued his threat while responding to a tweet from Rep. John Yarmuth, who was boasting about his “F” grade from the National Rifle Association.

In his tweet, Congressman Yarmuth asked colleagues to join him in wearing a button displaying the designation until “the GOP finally stands up to the gun lobby and helps us pass common-sense gun safety legislation. Find me to get a pin.”

An obviously upset Nett replied to the tweet by urging the Democratic lawmaker to move the pin so as to provide a better target for him to shoot at. Nett tweeted:

Move it over just a bit. I was trained center mass

The thinly veiled death threat was immediately condemned by both sides of the aisle.

The Kentucky Democratic Party issued a statement declaring Nett was “unfit to be elected for or hold any Kentucky office.”

In that statement, Kentucky Democratic Party Chairperson Ben Self said:

Carl Nett’s comment about shooting Rep. John Yarmuth is not only alarming but terribly offensive given the numerous shootings including one in Great Mills, Maryland today. Nett, a current Republican candidate for secretary of state and campaign contributor to Gov. Matt Bevin, is obviously unfit to be elected for or hold any Kentucky office. Any threats of violence cannot be tolerated in our current political or public forums.

GOP spokesman Tres Watson also slammed Nett’s comments as unacceptable. In a statement Watson said:

We believe the tweet was inappropriate. We condemn any suggestion of violence against public servants, even if in jest.

Kathryn M. Stocks, Scott County GOP Chair, issued a statement as well, noting that the organization does not condone threats of violence, and cancelling a speaking engagement scheduled for this evening:

Originally, Mr. Nett had been scheduled to speak to the regular monthly meeting of the Scott County Republican Party this evening. That invitation has now been rescinded and there are no plans to offer another. We call on Mr. Nett to publicly apologize to Congressman Yarmuth immediately.

The offensive tweet has since been deleted, but not forgotten.

Bottom line: A gun loving Republican defended the NRA by sending a death threat to a Democratic congressman via Twitter. But he loves Jesus, and he’s “pro life.”

And so it goes.
