One of the very funnest of the Hindu holidays is coming up next week. This year is seems to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day here in the States. The web tells me that Holi starts March 17th.
For all the info, check out last year’s post about Holi, its origins, how to celebrate, and interesting tips: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/whitehindu/2013/03/holi/
Masala Mommas told me about a new app this year that helps kids learn about Holi. It sounds like you get to play holi virtually! More info here: Tamarind Tots
A traditional drink is “bhang thandai” which is made with marijuana! Article about the practice and recipe here: Bhang Your Head (I bet it would still taste great without the marijuana!)
Another thing I thought about for kids was playing out the story of Holika with felt toys. I got the idea from this felt bonfire sold on Etsy!
What are my plans?
We’re going back to the ISKCON temple where we went last year. They always throw fantastic parties! Last year Brad and I went with a friend, but this year we’ve started a Facebook event and invited over 50 people. We’ll see how many of our friends and family we can get over there.
If you’re in the D.C., Maryland, Virginia area, you should come! They’re doing it on March 29th. There’s booths and food and lots of people with colors. Be sure to look for me, I would love to say hi!
Even if you can’t actually get to a holi-playing party, do enjoy the day and remember it’s a time to welcome spring, play pranks, and feel light-hearted!
