The Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments has decided that we should not move the Sign of Peace. It was suggested that it was more appropriate for the sign of peace to be exchanged before the offertory. This is where it is in the Anglican liturgy, and it makes sense to me.
But it ain’t to be.
This article about the statement from the Congregation reminds us that sharing the sign of peace is optional. On a weekday Mass with a few people scattered around the church we don’t need to turn around and wave to each other.
The peace is also not a time for “Hi, how are ya?” type of greetings. It is a solemn, liturgical action not a time to run around giving giving hugs and air kisses.
And it is certainly not some sort of hippie type greeting…”Hey man, all we are saying is give peace a chance.”
