Azurite from China photo courtesy of wikimedia. Licensed under CC 0.0

Just one look at the shiny vibrant blue stone known as azurite and you can see its magick. Azurite is named for its deep blue color.  It is found in mines located in Australia, Chile, Egypt, France, Namibia, Peru, and Russia. The stone is known to help with intuition, clarity, insight, meditation, healing, and astral travel. Azurite is called “stone of heaven” and helps to connect with these higher realms. According to the Witchipedia site “Azurite is a soft, bright blue copper carbonate mineral with high copper content. It was known to the ancient Greeks as kuanos and to the Romans as caeruleum, meaning “deep blue” in both cases.”

This can be a great stone to utilize in connection to chakra work, and is particularly helpful in working with the heart, throat, and the third eye chakra. Because of its connection to the psychic world this is also a good stone to keep with your Tarot Cards or other tools for divination.

Do your best not to expose this stone to direct sunlight which will cause it to fade, or to running water which may weaken it.

Azurite Around The Globe

  • Legends say that Azurite was used in the lost city of Atlantis to perform healing magick.
  • In Ancient Egypt this stone was said to allow one to communicate with the spirit world.
  • Chinese culture says Azurite can be used to connect with Heaven.
  • The Indigenous Americans people known as the Zuni often use this stone to craft animal fetishes for protection and power.
  • This crystal was one of the earliest substances used to make dyes and paints.
  • Famous psychic Edgar Cayce was said to have used this to help him focus and meditate.

Carnelian photo by Claire. Licensed under CC 2.0

For some of us in matters of Love we need all the help we can get, and the sunny crystal Carnelian can do just the trick. The stone is found in Brazil, Uruguay, India and parts of the U.S. Traditionally, Carnelian is a stone of vitality and creativity, both necessary components for sustaining a good relationship.

One of the reasons that this makes such a good crystal to use for love is that one of it’s primary components is healing. You can use Carnelian to heal your root chakra which is said to represent your base emotions. It is also great to use for back pain, just in case your sexual aerobics requires you to “put your back into it,” as the song says.

Very often this stone is used as jewelry, if you can get a piece you enjoy that uses this stone I highly recommend it. Cleanse it first by burying it overnight, leaving on the windowsill for 24 hours to be blessed by the rays of the sun and moon, or rinse it quickly in sacred water.

Carnelian is also used in the ancient art of Feng Shui. An article on The Spruce website tells us “Feng shui-wise, carnelian is used for its energy activating and protective qualities. It is often used along with citrine in the so-called feng shui gem tree for wealth, as well as various bracelets and amulets. Carnelian is also associated with the flow of abundance. The best feng shui bagua area for the placement of carnelian is in the Love & Relationships sector of a home or office. Two carnelian hearts here can be a wonderful enhancement of warm, loving and sensual energy. The second best placement is in the Fame & Reputation bagua area.”

Folklore and Magick of Carnelian

  • This stone is seen to represent lions, so if they are one of your totem animals consider using it in conjunction with your workings with them.
  • Carnelian is a stone of fire, so if you have Fire elements in your Astrological chart that you wish to enhance place this on your ritual altar or use it in a piece of power jewelry.
  • One of the oldest sacred stones in use, this crystal is highly prized in Arab culture where it is called “The stone of Kings. “
  • One bit of history from gemsociety.org explains “During Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign (1798-1799), he acquired an octagonal, inscribed carnelian seal. Both Napoleon Bonaparte and his nephew Napoleon III held this talisman in high, even superstitious, regard. Napoleon III wore the seal on his watch chain. He gave it to his son, the Prince Imperial, Louis-Napoleon, and instructed him to wear it. However, the Prince Imperial merely followed orders while wearing this piece. Obviously, his faith in this talisman didn’t run as deep as the faith the Zulus put into their weapons. When they slew him in South Africa in 1879, they took it from him.”
  • In 18th Century Europe wear jewelry made of this was said to wish everyone who saw it Good Luck.

Amethyst photo by Melissa Collins. Licensed under CC 2.0

Amethyst is a stone of clarity, spirituality, joy, and self- awareness. When we talk about stones, Amethyst is one of the most popular. It can help to heal both physical and emotional pain. For best results use this crystal in direct contact with your skin. You may even consider getting a pendant or talisman made of amethyst to wear. One nickname for this stone is “nature’s sedative.” Consequently, it can be very valuable when doing spiritual journey work. Amethyst will help you to connect with higher realms, and also grant you insight in all situations.

The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall tells us “Amethyst is one of the most spiritual stones, promoting love of the divine, giving insights into its true nature, and encouraging selflessness and spiritual wisdom.” Because of it’s psychic prowess it is one of the stones I like to use for divination. I keep a small piece of amethyst in the bag with my tarot cards. I also have a pendulum made of this stone. The Amethyst pendulum is useful for all types of questions.

Our friends over at Dreaming Goddess retell the myth surrounding this stone :

In his poem “L’Amethyste, ou les Amours de Bacchus et d’Amethyste” (Amethyst or the loves of Bacchus and Amethyste), the French poet Remy Belleau (1528-1577) invented a myth in which Bacchus, the god of intoxication, of wine, and grapes was pursuing a maiden named Amethyste, who refused his affections. Amethyste prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the chaste goddess Diana answered, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethyste’s desire to remain chaste, Bacchus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.

Variations of the story include that Dionysus had been insulted by a mortal and swore to slay the next mortal who crossed his path, creating fierce tigers to carry out his wrath. The mortal turned out to be a beautiful young woman, Amethystos, who was on her way to pay tribute to Artemis. Her life was spared by Artemis, who transformed the maiden into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws. Dionysus wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god’s tears then stained the quartz purple.

Folklore  + Facts About Amethyst

  • At one timed Amethysts were just as prized as rubies and sapphires, and some even adorn the royal jewels of Great Britian.
  • It is the traditional birthstone for the month of February
  • Amethystos means “not drunk” in Ancient Greek. Legend says that you can not become intoxicated if you wear this stone.
  • St. Valentine was reported to have worn a ring of amethyst with a cupid carving.
  • Early Christians believed the stone illustrated the blood and wounds of Christ (that’s creepy)
  • The stone is actually a variety of Quartz, and the purple and red hues are from iron.
  • For best results keep it away from sunlight, because that may cause colors to fade.
  • Leonardo DaVinci believed amethyst could strengthen the intelligence.

Desert Rose Selenite licensed under CC 0.0
Desert Rose Selenite licensed under CC 0.0

The are many crystals used for love, many because of their design, all because of their properties. The desert rose crystal is both of these things. Desert rose is also called sand rose, or selenite rose. Magickally the stone will help give you confidence, protection, harmony, and love.

According to the Australian site feelcrystals.com.au the desert rose crystal is ” A variety of gypsum with a hardness of 1.5 – 2, these mineral roses are formed by the forces of wind, water and pressure in dry, arid regions due to the evaporation of a shallow salt basin. When sand particles become embedded in these basins, the loose sand is trapped in the minerals during the evaporation process and forms rosette-like concretions with unique flower-like crystal structures. Desert roses are found in the Sahara desert, the Southwest of the USA, Australia, Mexico and Spain.”

Many are familiar with the song Desert Rose, written by Gordon Sumner and Mohammed Khelifati, and popularized by Sting on his album Brand New Day.

I dream of love as time runs through my hand
Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise …

The lyrics echo the promise of love and devotion this crystal holds. Popular folklore tells us that this stone when exchanged between lovers will reconcile past problems and bind them together in the days to come. As far as love and romance are concerned this is a great crystal to use when the situation you are in seems hopeless. It is a variety of selenite, which we have discussed before on this blog. In the post Love Crystals: Selenite we discuss how it ” will help you find and manifest your true love. This stone is named for Selene, the Greek Goddess of the moon. In charge of emotions, passion, love, and magick.” These crystals are small ranging from 1/2 inch to 4 inches. This makes them ideal for carrying in you pocket, or in a mojo or medicine bag. Desert rose crystals can also be used in sacred geometry and crystal grids. Consider placing them in the four corners under your bed or in the room where you sleep.

Turquoise is a wonderful crystal to use for love. It gives healing, joy, luck, and longevity. Turquoise is prized in many cultures: Native American, Egyptian, and more. In fact the word comes from the French, and actually means Turkish.

Today you can find the stone in the countries of Iran, China, Tibet,  Australia, Afghanistan, Chile, Mexico, and the United States. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior ” Chemically, a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum, it is formed by the percolation of meteoric or groundwater through aluminous rock in the presence of copper. For this reason, it is often associated with copper deposits as a secondary mineral, most often in copper deposits in arid, semiarid, or desert environments. For thousands of years the finest intense blue turquoise in the world was found in Persia…. This changed during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when modern miners discovered or rediscovered significant deposits of high-quality turquoise in the western and southwestern United States. Today … the majority of the world’s finest-quality turquoise comes from the United States, the largest producer of turquoise.”

Many psychics agree Sugilite is one of the most powerful and protective items you can use in your magick. Sugilite is seen as a healer’s stone. Kyanite is a stone of extremely high vibrations. It creates bridges and pathways were none were to be found before. Unlike other stones it does not take on negative energy. Thus you may perform rites or rituals to bless or consecrate it, but none for cleansing will be needed.

It’s name comes from the Greek word meaning deep blue. However the magickal Kyanite comes in a myriad of colors : blue, indigo, orange ,green, and black. Each resonates with it’s own strength and power. The blue variety is said to impart peace, power, trust, and faith. It also helps provide understanding and transformation. Indigo manifestations of this stone brings wisdom, connection to higher realms, and assistance with spiritual journeys. Orange Kyanite is said to stimulate the sexual organs, and heal the body overall. The green form of this crystal is focused on growth and new beginnings. The black variety of this stone is said to bring power, protection, and safety.

Kyanite Spells

All of the different varieties of this stone can be used in your love magic. One simple spell involves taking a piece of kyanite jewelry in the appropriate color and charging it with love oil. Try Love Potion Number 9, 10, or 11 featured here on this blog. Or use one of your personal favorites. Charge the jewelry overnight by the light of the Full Moon and then wear daily to bring about your desired results.

Alternatively you can use Kyanite to set up a sacred grid in your home. This stone is frequently used in Feng Shui to bring calming energy to a space. The following ritual will provide both peace and protection to an area. It is great to use in a child’s bedroom (just be sure to place the crystals somewhere out of danger.) You will need 4 wands of black kyanite. Rinse these in spring water and then place in the four corners of the room. Start from the north side and move counterclockwise through the space. Concentrate to keeping the room blessed and protected. If you like recite the 23rd Psalm or other protection prayer.
