Discussing a widow, mother, a female GFA worker — Malati, the difficulty, pain & opposition, her husband's last commission & the promises in God's Word.

“After my death, there will be many people—even my relatives from our own house—they will reject you. They will say [unkind] words to you; they will oppose you, but never forget the love of Jesus,” Jyan’s words pierced through Malati’s heart.

This sister serves as a female GFA worker.

Malati and her husband had endured much together, and now he commissioned her to stand—without him. Even as he lay weak from heart disease, the four years he spent committed to the Lord gave him strength to endure through the end.

Bearing the Name Widow

After Jyan died, Malati witnessed his dying words come true. Villagers and relatives asked why she was continuing to follow Jesus and live as she was when she should return to her old traditions. Malati’s pastor, Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Jaton, encouraged her, much like he had been doing the past four years. Now his encouragement was even more appreciated than before as she struggled with bearing the title “widow,” taking care of her two young children and desiring to pursue the Lord more.

“I will stand beside you, and I will pray on behalf of you,” Pastor Jaton said.

This sister lives and serves as a female GFA worker.

Journey of a Female GFA Worker

Gospel for Asia founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: A national missionaryMalati wanted to serve the Lord and commit her life to ministry. But could she? Should a woman with two young children who was now living the life of a widow dare go this route? The vision, the passion…they were all there, and for Pastor Jaton and the leaders of the church, that was enough.

For one year Malati studied at a Bible college. With a burden searing her heart for others to know her Comforter, Malati spent a second year on the field doing a practical internship with a young woman who also attended Bible college. Pastor Jaton, during this time, took care of Malati’s two sons.

After graduation, Malati wanted to go back home and minister to her relatives, but the Lord had need for her elsewhere. There was a pastor who needed help reviving one of his churches. Willing to serve where the need was the greatest, Malati and her two sons moved.

Submission and Eternal Fruit

Today, Malati serves in three surrounding churches. She leads the children’s Sunday school and Women’s Fellowship. She also helps lead prayer meetings in believers’ homes and often travels with a few other women to nearby villages to share the love of Christ.

Malati’s journey as a female Gospel for Asia (GFA) worker, however, hasn’t been without pain. As a widow, she faces difficulties among those with whom she shares the love of Jesus. To bring down the barriers that hinder the message of hope she shares, Malati doesn’t always explain she is a widow.

Serving as a female GFA worker with Gospel for Asia (founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan)“I know it is very difficult being a widow and being a woman,” she says. “Whenever I find that people are not genuine, . . . and they are going to treat me in a different way, . . . I did not disclose myself as a widow, knowing that they would reject me.”

It also causes her much heartache when she is scolded for not remarrying. People will tell her, “You are still young and you have children, . . . so now why do you continue your journey like this? It is better that you get married and have a husband.”

But as a faithful daughter of the King, Malati doesn’t let other people’s remarks or criticism keep her from serving Him. The love of Jesus propels her to continue. It is her one constant source of strength, and she keeps reaching out to the sick and stretching out her hand to the needy.

Whenever she faces discouragement, she kneels on the floor, tears streaming down her cheeks, asking God to help her bear the stinging remarks of others who don’t understand the Lord’s calling on her life. Being a widow, a mother and a female Gospel for Asia (GFA) worker doesn’t come without pain. But she clings to her husband’s last commission and the promises in God’s Word, and she is able to continue.

Work of a Gospel for Asia missionary founded by K.P. Yohannan.

When she rises to her feet, she rises renewed and with a passion to reach more villages and proclaim with fervency the comforting love of the Savior. The road ahead may be long and hard, but Malati has decided to follow Jesus—there is no turning back.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by K.P. Yohannan, which inspired numerous charities like Gospel for Asia CanadaDiscussing the areas with short water supplies, where people often have to choose between walking for miles to find clean water or settling for contaminated sources, and the Gospel for Asia Wells that ensure none will go thirsty.

The young father of four lowered his vessel deep into the well, hesitantly expecting the rope in his hands to tighten and the bucket to submerge beneath the water. Instead, the cord relaxed and he heard the unsettling sound of his bucket hitting the sand far below.

Thunk.

Rasna sighed as he pulled up the rope, his suspicions confirmed: His well had finally run dry.

Sand in Their Water

The well Rasna dug on his property had served his family faithfully for years. As time passed, however, they noticed a problem: Their water grew more and more cloudy with each bucketful they collected.

The family began storing the murky water in containers to let the sand and other debris settle at the bottom before using it. Time consuming as this simple filtering procedure was, the family managed to survive . . . until the well dried up completely.

Left with no other choice and a severe need for water, the family began the backbreaking task of hauling water from a source far from their home, as many other villagers were also doing. Then one Sunday, Rasna decided to talk to Pastor Payas. Rasna had developed a friendship with the Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor and had come to know the Lord after he heard Pastor Payas share his own testimony of God’s grace. Maybe he could do something about their situation.

Gospel For Asia Well Benefits 25 Families

Pastor Payas assured Rasna he would do all he could to help him and his family. The two men prayed and waited for the Lord’s answer. When a survey of Rasna’s village showed the people’s need for clean, accessible water, a Jesus Well was installed and dedicated for the use of the entire village only a short time later. The well now blesses 25 families with clean water for their daily needs. Because its location is near Rasna’s home, he and his family members often use this opportunity to share what God has done in their lives with the people who draw water from the well.

I am thankful to my church for the installation of this Jesus Well,” Rasna says. “I cannot help the people of my locality, but our church has looked into the needs of the common man.”

“The local people . . . now know that our church performs good works and cares about the development of society,” Pastor Payas says.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by K.P. Yohannan, has been the model for numerous charities like Gospel for Asia CanadaDiscussing villages gripped by poverty, the severe water shortage, water borne diseases, and a Gospel for Asia Jesus Well that provides hope.

In the heat of midsummer, Gospel for Asia pastor Madhukar traveled to a neighboring village where some members of his church resided. He wanted to visit fellow believers and connect with other villagers. However, when Pastor Madhukar arrived, he realized the Lord had much more for him to do than just meet new people and make conversation.

A Thirsty Village

Deep in Asia, there was a small riverside village whose inhabitants followed the traditional religious teachings and worked as farmers. The village was very poor, and there was a severe water shortage, which forced residents to obtain their drinking water from nearby ponds, lakes and rivers. Because this water was contaminated, many of the villagers had become sick from drinking the water they collected. They knew very well that they needed fresh water, but they could find none.

When Pastor Madhukar visited the village, he immediately recognized the dire need for clean water. People had even been hospitalized after drinking the contaminated water nearby. Pastor Madhukar wanted to help; he shared with them about the advantages of installing a Jesus Well to supply clean water.

“If it’s possible, please help us to get it,” the villagers responded with hope.

After years of relying on contaminated lakes, ponds and rivers for drinking water, villagers enjoy their new Jesus Well, which provides clean water for the entire village.

A Well of Living Water

Pastor Madhukar soon received permission to install a Jesus Well. When it was completed, the local people rejoiced in how the Lord provided for their most basic need.

Having enjoyed the bounty that flows from the well, some villagers experienced the abundant love and provision of God, and eagerly invite Pastor Madhukar to pray for them whenever he visits.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by K.P. Yohannan, which inspired numerous charities like Gospel for Asia CanadaDiscussing Sabar and his village, the daily reality of unclean drinking water that far too many experience, and the Gospel for Asia Jesus Well that restored life and health.

Imagine for just a moment: The water that flows through your filtered refrigerator to your glass of ice or that pours from your sink faucet to the cooking pan is gone.

Instead, you heft a bucket in each hand and walk to the closest river, which is 300 meters (0.19 miles) away. When you return home with the heavy buckets, you finally take a deep drink to quench your thirst. You know the water you just drank could also contain disease-causing bacteria. But is there any other option?

For far too many, like 60-year-old Sabar, the answer is no. Drinking unclean water is a daily reality.

Struggle for Clean Water

Discussing Sabar & his village, the daily reality of unclean drinking water, & the Gospel for Asia Jesus Well that restored life & health.
A Jesus Well like this one proved to be life-changing for Sabar and his village.

Every day, Sabar trekked to the river to collect his water supply. Unfortunately, the water was not safe for consumption. Sabar often fell sick and his overall health suffered. But there was no other source of water for his village, so he continued to use the unfiltered river water.

One day, as Sabar made his way to the river, he met Gospel for Asia (GFA) workers Jamir and Vazir. They greeted him kindly and talked with him about how Jesus can provide for all his needs.

Naturally, Sabar thought of his village’s need for clean water. After all, he wasn’t the only one who suffered from the unclean water.

“If your Jesus will provide our needs, it will be very helpful to us,” Sabar told Jamir and Vazir.

Water from a Different Source

After the men prayed with Sabar, Jamir conducted a preliminary survey of the village area and took Sabar’s request for clean water to Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Tusar. Recognizing the village’s need for a good water source, Pastor Tusar began the process of installing a Jesus Well.

Jesus Wells provide communities with clean water, safe for cooking and drinking. They play a vital role in helping prevent disease caused by water contamination.

Soon the well in Sabar’s village was complete and ready for use. Now, instead of walking to the river every day, Sabar has a well near his home. The water is pure, and Sabar no longer suffers from the effects of drinking the contaminated river water. His health has greatly improved, and the well has been a blessing for the entire village.

Sabar saw God’s provision firsthand through the installation of the Jesus Well. He learned he could truly trust Jesus to provide for his needs. For Sabar, the gift of one well pours forth blessings of fresh water, good health and a growing relationship with Jesus.

To learn more about the effect Jesus Wells can have on a family’s health, watch Arnab’s story here.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Fae, her unyielding commitment for world missions, for Gospel for Asia and it’s national missionaries, through prayer, through her giving, through her life.

T

welve-year-old Fae listened intently to the speaker from the old-fashioned tent meeting revival. Visions of exotic and far-flung places flashed through her mind. When the speaker called people to dedicate their life to missions, Fae walked down the aisle, each step paving the path that would become her life’s legacy.

Born in 1938—one year before the world was plunged into the second World War—Fae grew up in a godly home. As nations battled—some to bring death and destruction, and others to bring hope and deliverance— something different budded in Fae’s heart: love for the people of the world.

Bringing Nations Near in Prayer

Throughout her life, Fae often asked the Lord to send her to a foreign country to serve Him. Then, one day, she heard a clear voice in her heart: “You will be a missionary on your knees.” Knowing God’s path for her, Fae planted herself firmly in her home state and got to work bringing the nations near through prayer.

Discussing Fae, her commitment for the mission field, for Gospel for Asia & it's national missionaries, through prayer, giving, her life.
By traversing the globe through prayer and supporting national workers, Fae partnered in bringing the good news of Jesus to more people than she could have ever done in person.

“[There are] so many things to pray about,” shared Fae in her testimony written later in life. “Especially for … people around the world and for missionaries seeking to [minister to] them … ‘We can open up whole countries by our prayers,’ said Watchman Nee.”

Fae dedicated an entire room in her house to prayer. On the walls, Fae hung a world map, displaying each country on the globe. In her prayers, Fae would visit each one. When Fae got her hands on the book Operation Mobilization, which lists prayer requests for every country in the world, she would pray through the entire book annually. Each page, marked with the date of her prayers, told the story of Fae’s journey to every nation and people on earth, sowing seeds of faith.

“You will be a missionary on your knees.”

In 1987, at 48 years old, Fae finally heard the word she had let go dormant: send.

“As soon as we became debt free,” shared Fae, “God gave us our ‘calling.’ We received a publication in the mail called SEND!

It was from a young ministry called Gospel for Asia (GFA). Fae knew this was the next step in her adventure in missions: to support national workers whom God would “send” to share His love with their own people. These men and women would travel to places that Fae could only reach in her prayers.

But how would she support them? Her husband’s modest income could support some missionary work, but Fae had big goals, such as donating 1 million dollars to missions in her lifetime, and big faith to see them fulfilled!

Fae was affectionately known throughout her community as the “Berry Lady.” People would come to buy her home-grown berries and hear her heart for missions work.

Berries Bring Eternal Life

After a move to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Fae and her husband purchased five acres of land. It was on these five acres that Fae would see her desire for serving in God’s kingdom fulfilled.

“I’d been asking the Lord what we might do to make some income on our new place,” shared Fae. “God led us to plant blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. We dedicated all the gross proceeds to help [others hears the Good News] through Gospel for Asia (GFA). So far, it has produced a good crop for 16 years!”

Tending a garden bursting with more than 120 plants, Fae became the local “Berry Lady.” On her business cards was written the purpose of the garden: to support missions across the globe. Fae’s berries flourished, becoming the most prolific garden in the area.

There was so much work to do in the garden: plant, weed, prune, pick, clean produce, talk with customers, ring up purchases and process paperwork. As Fae dug in and cultivated the garden, she knew that on the other side of the globe the missionaries her garden supported were sowing hope in the fertile lands of Asia.

The Legacy that Lasts Forever

For more than three decades, Fae invested her life in the world missions work of Gospel for Asia (GFA) through prayer, sponsoring national workers and sharing the ministry with others. In her prayer room, pictures of missionaries and Bridge of Hope kids covered the walls, each personally sponsored and prayed for.

By Fae’s 81st birthday, after decades of planting and praying, her dream of donating 1 million dollars to missions work become a reality.

“Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing.” (Psalm 92:13–14)

Next to this verse in Fae’s bible is this prayer: “Help me to bear much fruit for you, Lord, even in my old age!”

In her lifetime, Fae invested in 163 national workers, 19 Bridge of Hope kids, and almost every area of Gospel for Asia world missions ministry. At the end of her life, Fae took a final prayer walk through her berry fields to reflect on the privilege God gave her to impact many lives for eternity. This was a life well lived.

Fae’s legacy is that she cultivated life—in the garden, in the lives of those close to her and in those living across the globe. Fae went home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2019. She is now praising her Savior in heaven, and one day she will be joined by the countless lives she touched while here on earth.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing the Gospel for Asia radio program that brought Jesus to Kaneila’s life, bringing transformation amid her husband’s opposition to her new found faith.

It was a day like any other for Kaneila. She completed her household tasks, attended to her children’s needs and did what she could to prepare for her husband’s return home from working in the Philippines. As she settled in to listen to her radio, she was drawn by the message of Bishop Antonius Mor Eusebius on a Gospel for Asia (GFA) radio program. Seeking merely soothing sounds, Kaneila found soothing words for her soul and tuned in regularly, searching for that same voice.

Hearing and Hiding

Discussing the Gospel for Asia radio program that brought Jesus to Kaneila's life, bringing transformation amid her husband's opposition.
Kaneila found hope through a Gospel for Asia (GFA) radio program.

Soon after listening to the radio program, Kaneila connected with her neighbor, a member of the Gospel for Asia church in her village, and expressed how she enjoyed the program. From then on, Kaneila and her neighbor developed a deeper friendship that helped the mother grow in her understanding of Jesus. Eventually, Kaneila joined her neighbor in worshiping Jesus at the local church.

Kaneila loved learning about Jesus

, but fearing her husband’s reaction to her newfound faith, she read her Bible in secret.

Tears, Testimonies and Transformations

When Kaneila’s husband found out she was attending church, he grew furious. He beat her and coerced her to not go. Fearful, Kaneila thought the only way to protect herself was to go back to her old ways, abandoning her faith in Jesus.

Hearing of her difficult situation, the pastor of the church she had been attending reached out to her; so did many of Kaneila’s neighbors. They visited her, read Scripture, and shared their own testimonies of how Jesus worked in their lives. Kaneila was encouraged by their words, and she continued praying for her own protection as well as her husband’s transformation.

After four months of diligent prayer and enduring faith, Kaneila received an answer. Kaneila’s faith in Jesus had changed her, and her husband had taken notice. Her attitude and behavior touched his heart deeply, and he allowed her to go to church again. He even asked her to pray for certain things in his own life.

Kaneila is now an active member of the local church. She attends all spiritual programs and helps however she can. Kaneila no longer lives in fear of her husband’s reactions but enjoys the freedom, healing and soothing of soul she has found through Jesus Christ—all thanks to a radio program.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Sadhri, a widow, the social discrimination, the emptiness and grief, and the heaven sent renewed life through Gospel for Asia Workers.

Discussing Sadhri, a widow, the social discrimination, the emptiness & grief, & the heaven sent renewed life through Gospel for Asia Workers.

The day 23-year-old Sadhri buried her husband, she was blindsided by the news that her father-in-law was also dead. In a culture where a woman’s social standing is contingent on the men of the family, Sadhri, unmoored from the security of a husband and his father, feared the future that lay before her and her baby girl.

Before the dual tragedy, Sadhri’s family—her husband, their baby and Sadhri’s father-in-law—lived and worked at a tea garden in an area renowned as the largest producer of tea globally.

The days were long as Sadhri waded waist-deep through a sea of green, nimble fingers gliding over plant tops, plucking young leaves and buds and dropping them into the basket slung from her head. The chatter of other women floated over Sadhri, who preferred to keep her thoughts to herself.

Death Haunts the Tea Garden

Before that fateful day, Sadhri’s father-in-law had become ill and visited a doctor. He retreated home with medication to recover.

While he was still ill, Sadhri’s husband developed a mild fever. Death came so quickly they didn’t even have time to see a doctor. Then her father-in-law succumbed to his illness a day after his son.

After losing her husband and father-in-law, Sadhri (not pictured) feared the abuse and hardships faced by many widows in her community. Her future and the future of her baby girl were now shrouded by a darkness that tormented the young widow.

Sadhri turned from her husband’s funeral pyre. Shocked and alone, she carried her little girl back to the empty house.

Neighbors visited Sadhri, concerned at the suddenness of her losses, and offered words of sympathy. A believer and his wife from a local Gospel for Asia (GFA) supported church offered comfort from God’s Word and invited her to church. The young widow, unmoved by the love and attention, seemed paralyzed by her loss.

Sitting in emptiness and grief, morbid thoughts swirled through Sadhri’s head. Would everyone blame her for her husband’s death? What about her father-in-law’s? How would she take care of her daughter by herself? What future was there now for this child being raised by a widow? The whirlpool of thoughts pulled her deeper and deeper into depression. She could not bring herself to share her burdens, so she bottled them up. The only thing tethering her to this life was caring for her baby girl.

“In many countries, a woman’s social status is inextricably linked to her husband’s, so that when her husband dies, a woman no longer has a place in society,”

The mental strain Sadhri bore is common in societies where cultural norms cast widows in the role of perpetrator, blaming them for their husband’s death, rather than the role of devastated survivor. Even though many countries have passed legislation to protect widows, centuries of tradition are notoriously difficult to uproot, crushing widows under their burden.

“In many countries, a woman’s social status is inextricably linked to her husband’s, so that when her husband dies, a woman no longer has a place in society,” explained the UN in their 2018 report on International Widows Day.

With the sudden death of the two men Sadhri depended upon, she spiraled into mental shock. Sadhri started to notice strange occurrences. Things in the house seemed to move on their own. Her 2-year-old daughter had nightmares of her father beckoning her to join him.

At times, Sadhri felt like her husband was in the room with them. Sometimes it would be her father-in-law. Were they coming back to haunt her? Did they blame her for their deaths?

The mental strain led to physical sickness. Sadhri could no longer stay in her home alone; she moved to her mother’s.

Companionship and income are two of the greatest needs of widows who are cast off by their families. Sadhri (not pictured) found both in Bela, a missionary who rented a room in Sadhri’s house on the tea plantation.

Two Needs, One Solution – a Widow and a Gospel for Asia Worker

Sadhri traveled to the tea gardens from her mother’s house for several months, shuddering each time she passed her empty home. It would be so much easier to live at the gardens, but she could not bring herself to live there alone.

Gospel for Asia (GFA) pastor Ekanpreet would sometimes see Sadhri at the tea gardens and share a word of encouragement. He prayed for Sadhri, seemingly weighed down by an invisible burden that absorbed all her energy just to carry.

One day, someone contacted Pastor Ekanpreet about a Gospel for Asia (GFA) woman missionary worker serving nearby looking for a room to rent. Could this be the Lord’s provision for the grieving widow? Maybe she could move back home if she didn’t have to be alone. The extra income would also be a huge help for Sadhri.

A New Kind of Family

Sadhri and her daughter moved back home, making room for their new housemate, Bela.

The two women fell into a daily routine, Sadhri leaving for the tea gardens while Bela went out to minister. In the evenings, they shared a meal and Bela opened her Bible for devotions.

Sadhri listened politely at first, but as the words began to pierce her heart, she leaned in with great intensity. In bed, the words stayed with her, calming her thoughts and filling her dreams. The house no longer seemed haunted and Sadhri’s grief began to ease.

Friendship deepened between the women and brought solace to Sadhri’s lonely heart.

Sadhri continued working in the gardens, quietly picking tea leaves, but now her mind was filled with encouragement and hope. A smile played at her mouth as she dwelt on the goodness of God and His mercy.

Gospel for Asia (GFA) supported workers (missionaries, pastors, Women’s Fellowship leaders and Sisters of Compassion) specifically reach out to abandoned widows, offering encouragement and care for their practical needs. Many widows end up joining local churches, where they experience love and belonging.

The words shared by Bela returned to her again and again: God is our Father, Savior and best friend; nothing is impossible in Jesus Christ; the only thing is to believe in Him completely. The words washed over Sadhri and revived her hope in the future.

Life Renewed

Pastor Ekanpreet visited the women and rejoiced in their close bond. He prayed for the women and taught them from God’s Word. Sadhri started attending Pastor Ekanpreet’s church and found a community eager to embrace her with love.

Many a widow throughout Asia have found a new family in Gospel for Asia (GFA) supported churches – Pastors, national workers, women missionaries and Women’s Fellowships reach out to these vulnerable women, knowing the discrimination and poverty that threaten them. Gospel for Asia (GFA) supported workers have many tools to combat the struggles common to widows, tools such as vocational training to replace the income lost by their husband’s death, gifts of clothing and household essentials that may have been confiscated by relatives, and income producing gifts such as goats and pigs.

“Such caring action demonstrates one way to address widows’ situation: at the grassroots level,” Gospel for Asia (GFA) shared in a report on the plight of many a widow like Sadhri, “Widows Worldwide Face Tragedy, Discrimination.”

Pastors, missionaries and local believers also embrace widows who have been cast out of their families, offering love and connection to women who have lost more than just financial security.

“Much of this outreach is conducted by Sisters of Compassion (women who are specially trained to care for marginalized groups), leaders of Women’s Fellowship groups and pastors’ wives,” the Gospel for Asia special report said. “As women, they are more readily received into women’s homes in the segregated society.”

They are ambassadors of God’s love and bridges into His family.

Sadhri no longer feels alone in the world. She is strengthened to live a full life and has regained hope for her daughter’s future. The threat of poverty has been dismantled, and the curse of widowhood has retreated in the face of a loving community. Sadhri has picked up the pieces of her life and sees a way forward for her and her daughter.

Despite her being a widow, Sadhri could smile again after she found a new hope in Jesus through the help of Gospel for Asia workers.
Like the woman pictured here, Sadhri could smile again after she found a new hope in Jesus. Life no longer seemed uncertain and scary. She knows God will take care of her and her daughter.

You can give hope to many others like Sadhri, a widow, a woman who needed to hear of God’s love. Empower Gospel for Asia national workers to bring that hope and love to a woman today.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Ruhae, the grief and hardships of an aging widow, the last living relative for her grandchildren, and the Gospel for Asia Pastor that brought God’s peace and comfort.

Her son was murdered. Her daughter-in-law and husband both succumbed to illnesses. Ruhae was the last living relative for her grandchildren but at 77-years-old, she knew she wouldn’t live much longer. Who would take care of her young grandchildren, only 12 and 8 years old, when she passed?

Gospel for Asia (founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Discussing Ruhae, the grief and hardships of an aging widow, and the Gospel for Asia Pastor that brought God's peace and comfort.
Ruhae (pictured) had become her grandchildren’s sole caregiver, and she often worried for their futures.

Hardened by the World

That question kept Ruhae up at night as she agonized over the fate of her precious grandchildren. Even at 77 years old, she worked in the fields to scrape together enough money to feed her grandchildren. It was hard, menial labor, but Ruhae did it. How else would she provide for them?

The grief and hardships the aging widow had faced over the years hardened Ruhae’s heart. There is no place and no one who can give me peace, she thought.

Reigniting a Spark of Hope

Gospel for Asia pastor Shirom led a small fellowship of believers in Ruhae’s village. The temporary building his congregation met in was close to Ruhae’s home. Occasionally, the pastor and a few believers visited Ruhae, offering prayer and encouragement.

On one particular visit, Gospel for Asia (GFA) Pastor Shirom encouraged the widow to give all her cares and burdens to the Lord because He could give her the peace she was searching for. He could remove the anxiety she felt when she thought of her grandchildren’s future. He could lighten her burdens. The thought intrigued the widow, who had almost given up hope of finding relief for her and her grandchildren. Desiring to know more, Ruhae began attending services at Gospel for Asia (GFA) Pastor Shirom’s church.

Widow Learns The Peace That Passes Understanding through Gospel for Asia Pastor

Little by little, Ruhae’s heart opened up. The widow realized that no matter what had happened in her life and no matter what the future held, God loved her and He provided.

“I get peace worshiping the Lord,” Ruhae remarked. “When I worry, I tell everything to God. … Before knowing the Lord, I worried, but when I heard about the Lord, I began to call upon Him. In spite of all problems, I feel peace of mind and pray more and trust in the Lord alone.”

Ruhae embraced God’s love into her heart fully. The calm Ruhae now feels knowing her grandchildren will be looked after dwarfs the worries she felt before.

“I am not scared of what the future holds,” Ruhae declares. “God is there to take care of my grandchildren.”

Read a story of how one widow touched another with God’s unfailing love through Gospel for Asia.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing Prisha and the Gospel for Asia Sisters of Compassion, women missionaries who dedicate their lives to bringing hope and God’s love to the most needy and disenfranchised.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Sisters of Compassion

The place was filthy. The people who lived there struggled daily to subsist. Their situation was desperate. They needed help, but it would have to come from someone willing to sacrifice their own comfort to come alongside and provide the relief the disenfranchised needed.

What would motivate someone to do that? Only love and compassion. Love can compel you to go. Compassion will compel you to dwell among them.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: Woman missionariesThat’s what happened after Prisha committed her life to serve Jesus with the Gospel for Asia Sisters of Compassion and volunteer to go to the people in the remote village of Punya Basti.

The people of Punya Basti lived in squalor and the stink of rotting animal carcasses, burning garbage and waste that littered the entire village. Outsiders would do their best to avoid the village because the stench was so onerous. The village had no electricity, no running water and no toilets. Prisha knew this, yet she chose to go there.

When she arrived, the reality exceeded her grimmest expectations. She found naked, hungry children, people covered in filth, mothers preparing meager meals in dirty pots and vessels, and drug and alcohol addiction rampant even among the children. The first drink of water offered to her in Punya Basti was in a glass so dirty that it broke her heart to realize what life was really like in the village.

Yet, when her Sisters of Compassion mentor suggested that she commute from another village where she would be safer, Prisha responded, “I don’t want to live in a different place. I want to stay in the midst of them, in the village, so I can understand their feelings … and they can understand the love we want to show them.”

Prisha’s story is more than one of compassion. It is one of redemption. Compassion is a feeling of empathy. Prisha knew that compassion motivated by love opens a way to redemption. She knew that the people needed to know that someone loved them and that those who loved them cared enough about them to help them learn how to live healthier and more productive lives. Living among them was the first step in demonstrating her love and compassion.

It was not a difficult decision for her to make, but there were times she wondered if it would be one that was difficult to keep. She and the Gospel for Asia Sisters of Compassion who joined her spent their first week in the village fasting and praying for the Lord’s guidance to show them how to build loving relationships with the villagers. They knew that they had to draw close to them in order to build relationships of trust.

As they cleaned the village streets—one of the lowliest of tasks for the lowliest of people in their country—and as they helped women with their daily chores, and as they helped take care of their babies, those relationships began to develop. Eating meals the locals cooked helped as well. Especially the mouthwatering tortoise and mongoose.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan: This Sister of Compassion ministers to the women around herThe relationships engendered the kind of trust that caused the people to listen to their advice. Prisha and the other Sisters of Compassion taught them how to bathe, brush their teeth, comb their hair and dress neatly and modestly.

Learning these valuable lessons led to the people accepting them as part of the family. As one of the villagers said, “We love them because they love us.”

Today, more than 1,000 Punya Basti villagers have been transformed by the love of Christ as it has been taught and demonstrated in the lives of the Sisters of Compassion. The village has been redeemed from the filth and squalor in which it was once lost. The transformation from darkness to light began with the love of Christ shining through one life committed to compassion. Now that love continues to transform individual villagers from the inside out as they, too, have come to accept His love and follow Him.

I can’t help but think about how Prisha and the seven other Sisters of Compassion so clearly demonstrated the love of Christ just as He loved us. He set aside His comforts to live among us in our world of filth and shame. He did it so that He would be able to completely understand our desperate situation and build a relationship with us based upon His sacrificial love. It was by doing so that His compassion opened the way for our redemption by having a personal relationship with Him.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanHeavenly Father, help us to see the others as you see them. Give us a love for them like your love, a love that breaks our hearts with compassion. Give us a compassion that is willing to act sacrificially so that others will see you in and through us so that they, too, will come to know you and be blessed by your great love. Give us a love that compels us to go and tell others who will receive that love and who will, in turn, go and tell others. Thank you, Lord, for what you are going to do through us.

WILLS POINT, TX – Gospel for Asia (GFA World and affiliates like Gospel for Asia Canada) founded by Dr. K.P. YohannanDiscussing the labors national missionaries, the constant difficulties and opposition, and God’s work through them, and through a Gospel for Asia (GFA) bicycle gift.

Pastor Gobi knelt on the ground while the sound of his prayers filled the air. Soon he would begin his ministry distributing literature and praying for the sick and needy. On his knees he would find victory. Gobi didn’t know it then, but a long journey of faith and endurance awaited him.

Gospel for Asia (GFA World) founded by Dr. K.P. Yohannan:Discussing the labors national missionaries, the difficulty and opposition, and God's work through them, through a Gospel for Asia bicycle gift.

Village Opposes the Good News

Early in the morning, Pastor Gobi felt the Lord’s prompting to share His love in one particular village, so he made his way there. But when he arrived, the pastor faced utter rejection. The villagers were worshiping their traditional deities, trying to find joy and peace in their hearts. They offered sacrifices to them, hoping to receive blessings, and they had no room for Pastor Gobi’s message of hope in Christ.

Some villagers snatched the literature Gobi offered them and tore the booklets. With threatening words, they told him to leave and not return.

A Heart Committed to Prayer

Even though it was difficult, Pastor Gobi prayed and sought God’s face, asking Him to prepare the soil of the villagers’ hearts and minds to know the Lord’s grace. Because this matter burdened his heart, he began to fast and pray every Friday for the village—something he would do for three years.

As time went by, Pastor Gobi felt full of the Lord’s courage, so he once again visited the village that had harshly rejected the Good News. Gobi passed out literature and shared God’s love with the villagers. At the end of the day, he met a man named Tosa.

Tosa was known as the poorest man in his village. He struggled finically. Though Tosa and his wife both worked as much as they could, they were barely scraping by. If they couldn’t work, they didn’t eat that day.

Meeting a Troubled Man

As Pastor Gobi conversed with Tosa, he heard the man’s story in detail.

Tosa was known as the poorest man in his village. He struggled financially. Though Tosa and his wife both worked as much as they could, they were barely scraping by. If they couldn’t work, they didn’t eat that day.

Tosa knew that if he could get to the city, he would find better work and be able to feed his family. But there was a problem: His family owned only one bicycle, and his children needed it to get to school each day. There was no other means of transportation he could afford. So he stayed in his village—sometimes walking by foot to nearby villages—looking for work so his family could live.

Doors Begin to Open

Tosa was presented with a Gospel for Asia bicycle by Pastor Gobi. With this useful gift, Tosa travels to the city and earns a better living.

Whenever Pastor Gobi visited the village, he made it a point to check in with Tosa and his family. As they saw the genuine love and care Gobi shared with them, they decided to learn about Jesus by attending church.

When it came time for Pastor Gobi to organize a Christmas gift distribution, he requested that Tosa be added to the list of recipients. Two months later, Tosa was presented with a bicycle. With this useful gift, Tosa traveled to the city and began to earn a better living. Soon his family could enjoy three meals a day, and he was even able to purchase more clothing for his family, including school uniforms for his children.

As Tosa and his family’s lives began to transform, the villagers watched them closely. Slowly their hearts began to soften. Their ideas about Pastor Gobi and God began to change. The villagers began to take the literature Pastor Gobi offered, and they read it with curiosity. They have begun to ask Pastor Gobi for prayer when they are sick or in need of peace.

As Pastor Gobi faithfully prayed, the Lord listened and answered the cries of his heart. Now Christ’s love is freely shared in a village that once rejected it. The bicycle was just one tool the Lord used to prepare the soil of hardened hearts!

Gospel for Asia bicycle prepared the way: As Tosa and his family’s lives began to transform, the villagers watched them closely. Slowly their hearts began to soften. They wanted to take the literature Pastor Gobi offered.
