Bay Leaf photo. Licensed under CC 0.0

Bay leaf is one of those marvelously magical ingredients that can be found in almost every kitchen cabinet. Bay can be used for protection, cleansing, money, healing, success, financial gain, and anxiety relief. Hoodoo is a series of practices based on what works. This herb works in a whole variety of situations, I hope you try it out.

Bay is a Mediterranean plant, but it can be grown indoors in colder climates. The botanical name of this plant is Laurus nobilis and it has been cultivated as both a culinary and magical herb for many centuries. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends that gardeners “Choose a warm, sheltered planting site, protected from strong winds and in full sun or light shade. Bay needs free-draining soil that doesn’t get waterlogged.” In cold climates it is frequently placed in pots and grown outdoors during the summer, and then brought inside as a houseplant before chance of frost.

This plant is quite literally the stuff of legend, Greek legend to be specific. It is said to have been named after the river nymph Daphne. Daphne is said to have been turned into the tree in order to shield her from the unwanted advances of the God Apollo. More detail about this can be found on the site hellenicgods.org .

One of the beautiful things about bay is that you can add it to your magick in many different ways. You can burn it. You can add it to your food. Your spells and magicks will be customized for your intent. The plant is thought to be associated with fire and ruled by the sun. Consequently it is said to be especially useful for those with strong Leo placements. This plants fiery energy is probably the reason it gets added to so many ritual burns and bonfires. However Kitchen Witches know that bay leaves floating in soups and stews are how most of us were introduced to this magickal treasure. The following spell working uses both fire and water to bring success when needed.

Bay Success Spell Working – Success spells are the go to workings in my spiritual arsenal.

Ingredients:

3 Bay Leaves

1 cup rain water

3 new coins (with the current year’s date)

1 small white votive candle

glass bowl

Instructions: Gather all your ingredients together on your ritual altar or shrine. If you don’t have an altar or shrine, you can simply place them on a table where they will be undisturbed for the time of the working. Place the bowl in the center of the space. Add the rain water, bay leaves and coins. Place the white votive in the center of the bowl and light it. Repeat the following three times, “vision and action come to me, grant me all the success that will be.” Remember to never leave a burning candle unattended. As the candle burns down, think about all the ways success can and will come to you. Pay attention to any unusual thoughts you may have. Bay is a prophetic herb and may be guiding you towards some interesting and new avenues for success. When the candle has burned down take the items out of the water. Dump the water at a crossroads. Take the coins and place them in your purse or wallet. Bury the bay leaves as close to your front door as possible, if you do not have open ground there consider placing them in a flower pot. The used wax from the candle can be placed in the trash.

People unfamiliar with Paganism may think there’s a disconnect between ancient religions and systems of belief and what we think of as modern technology. In many ways this could not be farther from the truth. One of the reasons that these traditions are so popular in the modern world is that they are fluid and inclusive, embracing modern in every sense. As much as people want to think of the past as static and solid, nothing is farther from the truth. Contact between cultures have always meant fluidity of everything from belief, to food, to language, and more. While cultural appropriation may be the hot take of modern times, cultural appreciation has been going on for several Millennia. However, technology doesn’t come from a single culture, it comes from everywhere and everything.

The word Technology originates from the Greek language. It is a word blend of Techne, which means skill, craft, and art, basically a way of getting things done; and the word Logos, which is the word for word. It’s an old word which found it’s way into the English language around the 1600s. Technology pre-dated the age of enlightenment and the age of modernity. At it’s core Paganism is a way of getting things done too. I often explain to people that for me simply put magick and Paganism are creative ways to get things done. Paganism is in many ways inclusive, and by that I mean honoring and including the sacredness of nature as part of the religions. It doesn’t matter if we are looking at Norse Paganism, or Celtic, or Hellenic, or any of the numerous other systems they all salute the beauty and bounty of the earth and the elements.

When I started thinking about this complicated question of technology and paganism, I realized I’m probably one of the best bloggers to tackle it. Very often newcomers to Paganism refer to me as an OG Witch, and since I’ve been practicing for over 4 decades… I guess I own that. I did host the first searchable magical herb database back in the early nineties, and ever since they put forth the term Blerd I’ve embraced my Black Nerdiness. In addition to identifying as a Pagan and a Witch, I am also a Voodoo Priestess and a practitioner of African Traditional Religion. Here on this blog I have frequently written about technology and magick. In my post Techno-Voodoo 2.0 I explain “Like most kids, technology was mostly my master and sometimes my muse. I dreamed of a betamax, does anyone remember those ? I wanted to capture all the moments that were going missed. Never in my wildest imagination could I have dreamed of the possibilities we now have at our fingertips. Someone asked me once what my favorite magickal tool was and I said final cut ( the editing software.) Technology like magick expands exponentially everyday with each new participant, each new effort. The divine marriage of the two was inevitable.”

I guess what we are ultimately discussing here is a fusion of old and new. Paganism’s earth centered focus and inclusion of the divine feminine allows us to celebrate that everything old is truly new again. We were all born from woman and the religions of the sacred feminine celebrate this on absolutely every level. We wouldn’t be here without women, but we wouldn’t be on this planet either if we hadn’t embraced technology.

In Voodoo we even have a specific deity from Haiti known to govern technology named Simbi. Some even think that this is the origin of the popular word Zombi. Ironic when we think of how in modern day so many become “zombified” slaves to their phones, tablets, online games, social media and more. Simbi also represents quickness, like a snake they move from stillness to lightning fast speed. It makes absolute sense when we think of the internet granting us the magickal power to communicate across vast distances in an instant. Years ago we had a Simbi ceremony where we created a sacred altar in an old computer case. We covered it with foil, lights, and old circuits, and honored this spirit of magick and information. We saluted the power and possibility of technology in all it’s forms.

It is my hope that those reading this post finds ways to salute and celebrate the technology in our lives that allow us to survive and hopefully thrive. We can use both old and new techniques to help strengthen our religion and bring greater power to our practice, whatever the denomination.

My Witchies Exceptional Blog Post Award from Modern Witch.

It has been a very busy year here at the Voodoo Universe blog. We’ve hit 666 posts on the blog ( Hail Satan … just kidding.) Fortunately we continue to be dedicated to providing accurate and respectful information about all the African Traditional Religions or ATRs. We managed to win outstanding blog post of the year (see above) for a piece that was very close to my heart ” Riots, Racism, Representation, Rights, and Reparations … A Rant.” So much of what I have seen in the community de-centers the voice of actual Black people like myself, so to win recognition for this was extra satisfying for me. Many thanks to Modern Witch, Devin Hunter, Laura Tempest Zakroff, and everyone who voted for me. If you haven’t had the chance to read the post, I sincerely hope you do now.

The most popular post of the year however wasn’t this award winning one but instead one on making Magickal Hand Sanitizer. I called it the magickal hand sanitizer recipe we may not want, but it looks like we’re all going to need. Right after I published it I noticed that many witchy stores were making their own versions with Florida Water just like mine, but this post provides detailed instructions on making your own.

Another wildly popular post was one I wrote back in January called The Importance Of The Daily Tarot Pull. Here I discuss ways to help better understand your cards and navigate your life by pulling a card a day. Using tarot this way will help you prepare for the both joys and challenges each new day will hold.

One post I was particularly proud of was my Black Tarot Readers, Psychics, and Astrologers: A Resource Guide. This was well received both with views and the response I received in the Black community. I had wished for a guide like this, so I created one. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so look for an update on Voodoo Universe in the future. One thing that surprised me about this post was that it met with a serious amount of opposition, with privileged people questioning the need for such a list. Ultimately this blog is set up to educate and empower people so hopefully it is doing it’s job.

A sample chapter of my new bestselling book Orishas, Goddesses and Voodoo Queens debuted on Voodoo Universe and was one of the most read posts of the year. The Many Faces of Oshún talks about the myths and reality of this beautiful Orisha of love and money.

Over the years we’ve become the most popular Voodoo blog in the world. Voodoo Universe now has over 110,000 hits a year and counting and I’m grateful for each and every one of my readers. Magickal properties of Wisteria photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

Wisteria has always been one of my favorite flowers. It presents like a glorious waterfall of delightful purple blooms cascading from it’s weeping branches. As many of you know I have recently moved to New Orleans, and life in the swamp has been challenging. I haven’t been able to have a garden for a very long time. Much of my work since I arrived has been spent on carving out the wild space I landed on. Initially I began by taking back the overgrown small strip of land that leads to the backyard. Yes, I put down cardboard, and weed membrane, and mulch, and rocks…. This isn’t my first rodeo (in fact my minor in college was plant science.) Then I started to clip back the weeds. Now I know a weed is any unwanted plant, and there were many aggressive intruders coming from the other side of the fence.

Then the other day I spied some early summer blooms, and I realized what was crossing the divide to come and greet me. It was Wisteria. The magickal properties of wisteria are many, I recommend using the blooms very carefully in your workings as they are toxic to humans and animals. Unfortunately, almost all commercial oil formulas for wisteria are synthetic based. My favorite way to use them in ritual is to simply place a bouquet on the altar or shrine.

Magickal Properties of Wisteria-

  • Beauty
  • Grace
  • Self-love
  • Emotional Healing
  • Intelligence
  • Wisdom
  • Inspiration
  • Prosperity
  • New Beginnings
  • Longevity

The most popular connotation for Wisteria is longevity. The reason for this is that the plant is known to live for a very long time. Some trees are over a hundred years old, and one in Japan is said to have been thriving for 1200 years. Considering planting some as a symbol of elegance and permanence.

Growing Wisteria

Wisteria is known to do well in zones 4-9. It does best in full or partial sun, and tolerates a wide variety of soils. If you are wondering which type to plant almanac.com tells us “Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) are not native to North America and are considered invasive species in some states. The native wisteria species, American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) and Kentucky wisteria (Wisteria macrostachya), are great alternatives to the Asian species, so if you’re planning on adding a new wisteria to your garden, we suggest that you go with one of the North American species.”

Caution: All parts of the Wisteria plant are toxic to humans and pets, please do not ingest.

Love is here photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

Around here lovely and lusty magickal potions are always in the air. I can’t speak about these kinds of potions and workings without talking about ethics. When I wrote my book Love Magic, I began writing about the serious topic of ethics concerning spell work, particularly of this kind. I would never advocate doing magic to interfere with another’s will or to bind or trap them. I’m not even sure why someone would want that. Very often I do psychic readings for people who are focused on a particular person. It doesn’t matter if the information they find is positive or negative they still ask for some kind of spell to “get” their chosen person. I explain all the downfalls of this, it could backfire, it could cost more they you are willing to give, it will most likely (even if you are successful) be temporary, and the most important thing if there is someone better for you out there why wouldn’t you want that. The following spells are designed to bring the best love for you directly to you.

Lilith Lusty Oil – This recipe honors her dominion over sacred sexuality and carnal connection. Wear it whenever you are wishing to unite with this aspect of the Goddess Lilith. For best results wear the oil on your heart chakra, and your pulse points near your wrists, neck, and back of your knees.

Ingredients:

3 drops Amber oil
3 drops Myrrh oil
3 drops Patchouly oil
3 drops Vanilla oil
1 dram Sweet Almond oil
Glass bottle

Gather all ingredients together on your ritual altar or shrine for Lilith. Add the sweet almond oil to the bottle. Next add the amber, myrrh, patchouly, and vanilla to the bottle. Rub the bottle vigorously between your hand, then take a long slow breathe and exhale onto the bottle. The oil is now ready for use.

Black Tourmaline is one of my favorite stones, not just for love but for almost everything. My book Love Magic features one spell you may want to try, it will help make sure your home is blessed and always ready for love.

There are many ways to magickally bring love and passion into your life. You can find more suggestions on this blog in our Love Crystals series. Here there is information on using Azurite for strength and clarity, Carnelian for vitality and creativity, Turquoise for healing and happiness , Amethyst for joy and self-awareness, and many more recipes for lusty magickal potions.

Ancestors shrine bridge photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

People say that Samhain or Halloween is the time to honor the dead. Beliefs holds that during this time the veil or boundary between the world of the living an the dead is thinner and easier to traverse. While this is certainly true we all have ancestors and everyday they lend us their soul, their spirit and even their blood to insure that we prosper and thrive.

I received a response this week on my Twitter account asking if setting up an ancestor altar or shrine was purely reserved for those in ATRs or African Traditional Religions. My reply was simple we all have ancestors and they all need to be remembered. Very often when people ask me where to begin their spiritual path I recommend that they connect with their ancestors. In my post The Hardest Thing About Creating An Ancestor Altar I write “Some traditions believe that once loved ones are gone they travel to a different plane… a heaven, a nirvana, or a whole other world. It doesn’t really matter what your belief system is.”

A place to honor your departed loved ones can be as simple or as complex as you, or they want it to be. Everyone has ancestors and almost every culture has a way to remember them. Your offerings can be as simple as a white candle and a glass of water set it front of their pictures, or as complex as an entire room dedicated to those who have gone before. One thing I always try to do is to include the types of things that the individuals love in life. Most often this takes the form of their favorite foods and drinks. There are several posts here on Voodoo Universe about how to specifically set up your space, please check them out :

The Ancient Goddess Lilith is truly a Feminine force for all times. Mainstream religion repeatedly cast her as a malicious force, a tired misogynistic tale as old as time, particularly in this case. Referred to as a dark enchantress, hag, wild witch, seductive demon, harlot, succubus, and murderer…, she is the dark goddess of your dreams and her name is Lilith. Many believe that Lilith may be the related to the early goddesses Inanna and Ishtar, but no matter what you call her, or who she stands next to- she is fierce. Probably due to this fierceness the goddess Lilith gets some screwed up publicity everywhere from the popular HBO series True Blood to the historical record of ancient traditions.

Michael Herkes has been a solitary “GLAM” Witch for 18 years. Practicing Lilithian Witchcraft, he works exclusively with the Goddess Lilith and specializes in tarot, crystal, glamour, and moon magic. Michael is a regular contributor to Witch Way Magazine and weaves his web of Witchery in Chicago, IL. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sit down with Michael Herkes and discuss some of the mysterious of this marvelous Goddess.

There are many ways to connect with this Goddess, one is to light a candle and explore the darkness. Here is my formula for a simple yet effective way to do this.

Lilith Candle – This candle will help you to gain clarity and insight from the Goddess Lilith. As one of the most ancient Goddesses she can provide you with knowledge and solutions that have stood the test of time.

Ingredients:
1 7 Day candle for Lilith ( you may use an image candle or a solid black candle)
1 small Amethyst crystal chip
6 drops Amber oil
6 drops Sandalwood oil
1 small pinch mugwort
sigil for Lilith

Gather all the ingredients together on your ritual space or altar. Carve the sigil for Lilith into the top of the candle with a quill or toothpick. Place the oils, amethyst chip, and mugwort in the top of the candle. Hold the candle in both hands, feel the energy of Lilith rising up from the earth into your body and out through your hands into the candle. Place the candle on your altar or shrine and light it. As always never leave a candle burning unattended, if necessary put it out and light it again when you have the time and energy to devote to it. Continue until the candle is finished.

There is a lot more to say on the subject of this divine Goddess, stay tuned to this blog for more conversations with Michael Herkes, including all the fabulous information you need to know about his new book The Glam Witch.
